Climate change is one of the most challenging problems that humanity has ever faced. With the rapid development in technology, a key feature of 5G networks is the increased level of connectivity between everyday objects, facilitated by faster internet speeds with smart facilities indicative of the forthcoming 5G-driven revolution in Internet of Things (IoT). This study revisited the benefits of 5G network technologies to enhance the efficiency of the smart city and minimize climate change impacts in Singapore, thus creating a clean environment for healthy living. Results revealed that the smart management of energy, wastes, water resources, agricultures, risk factors, and the economy adopted in Singapore can remarkably contribute to reducing climate change, thus attaining the sustainability goals. Hence, future studies on cost-effective design and implementation are essential to increase the focus on the smart city concept globally.

Purpose – This paper examined the status of municipal solid waste management across Nigeria. The main purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive overview of the current state of municipal solid waste management in Nigeria. Approach – Information on solid waste generation rates, characteristics, storage, collection and disposal were obtained from literature. Characterization of solid waste obtained from final dumpsite and heavy metals accumulation in solid waste dumpsites were undertaken first hand. Findings – Solid waste generation rates were found to vary from 0.13Kg/capita/day in Ogbomosho to 0.71Kg/capita/day in Ado-Ekiti. Factors affecting solid waste generation rates were identified. Typically, food waste constitutes about 50% of municipal solid waste in Nigerian cities. Due to the dysfunctional state of municipal waste management authorities, many cities have been overrun by open dumps. Indiscriminate disposal of waste has resulted in the preponderance and bioaccumulation of toxic heavy metals in agricultural soils and plants as well as groundwater contamination. Research limitations/implications – Municipal waste management authorities do not have relevant data for solid waste management. There is urgent need to adopt sustainable waste management strategies in order to safeguard public/environmental health. Practical implications – Findings from this paper can form a veritable resource for the formulation and implementation of sustainable municipal solid waste management strategies. Originality – While most studies on municipal solid waste management in Nigeria are focused on selected cities of interest, this study cuts across most cities of Nigeria. Household waste management is a challenge in Accra, Ghana, due to increasing urbanization and unscrupulous dumping of garbage. The aim of this study was to determine the correlates of household waste management as well as their implications for public health. The study employed a descriptive, cross-sectional design with self-administered questionnaires to assess household waste management in Accra, Ghana. The study was conducted from September 1, 2019 to February 28, 2020. Our findings showed that rubber waste types were the most generated (26%) among respondents in their various households, followed by tin (19%) and plastic (16%). Majority (50.5%) of the respondents disposed of waste collected in public bins. However, about half of the respondents dumped waste through illegal or unauthorized means. About three out of four respondents (72.9%) indicated that improper management of garbage could affect the health of household members while 81.1% reported willing to participate in waste management in their neighborhoods. Females were more likely to be willing to participate in waste management compared to their male counterparts (p = 0.001). It is recommended that stakeholders and policy makers should focus on education for the citizenry on waste management behaviors. In addition, they should have increased access to waste collection services; since the public health implication of dumping anywhere could cause flooding, choke gutters, and lead to epidemic of cholera and vector borne diseases like malaria and dysentery.
