... It has become imperative for management to understand the impact of new technologies on their business, as there is a positive relationship between a business that has an alignment between ICT and strategy on the one hand and performance on the other [18]. Organisations that try out new approaches using SISs usually keep abreast of their external environment and discover previously overlooked information that could be used to improve their products and services, which in turn could establish them as leaders in their industry sector [22]. ...
... IS strategies adhere to the principle, 'the greater the risk, the greater the reward'. Therefore, if a rail organisation adopted new and successful innovations, it could achieve performance gains that had otherwise not been achieved [22]. ...
... "The effective use of SISs ensures a stronger impact of competitive strategy and corporate performance in turbulent economic environments" [19]. SIS's content feeds into the business strategy and is able to improve the likelihood of positive outcomes being attained in organisational performance through innovative activities [22]. There is a positive relationship between innovation and strategy in the public transport industry; and this could revolutionise an organisation's business model, enabling it to gain an increased market share [17]. ...
This study investigates the impact of rail passenger information systems (PISs) on service delivery in South Africa. Poor service delivery causes rail transport and profitability to decline, as national statistical reports show. PISs in the rail sector have been largely regarded as operational support systems. An interpretive explorative case study’s findings suggest that PISs have characteristics that qualify them as strategic information systems (SISs) to extend a business strategy. A framework is proposed to guide rail organisations on how PISs could be used as SISs to improve service delivery and profitability in this sector.
... Generally, the pursuit of profit maximization, competitive advantage, and survival in times of crises underscores the critical importance of organizational performance for every business. Moreover, the concept of organizational performance is multifaceted, encompassing various dimensions of success (Jääskeläinen & Luukkanen, 2017;Parida, Oghazi, & Cedergren, 2016;Yoshikuni et al., 2018). Numerous researchers have employed diverse metrics to gauge business performance, including monetary success, consumer performance, organizational learning, and internal process effectiveness (Bento, Bento, & White, 2013;Cunha Callado & Jack, 2015;Park, Lee, & Chae, 2017;Perkins, Grey, & Remmers, 2014;Yoshikuni & Albertin, 2017). ...
... Environmental uncertainty is a phenomenon intrinsically linked to the most diverse activities of¯rms, and it has been widely used in ISS literature. Previous empirical studies have demonstrated that uncertain environment moderates strategic IS planning on the success of planning [Yoshikuni et al. (2018)], IT-business strategic alignment on¯rm performance [Yayla and Hu (2012)], IT-enabled competitive advantage through improvisational capabilities [Pavlou and El Sawy (2010)], IT and knowledge capability on organizational agility [Mao et al. (2014)], IT-enabled dynamic capabilities on competitive performance [Mikalef and Pateli (2017); Mikalef et al. (2020)], and strategic information system on¯rm performance [Yoshikuni et al. (2019)]. However, there are fewer studies that have examined uncertainty environment in the IS strategy alignment with exploratory and exploitative innovation [Jansen et al. (2006)], even more, when it comes to ambidexterity [Soto-Acosta et al. (2018)], mainly in the alignment at the process level of IS strategy to enhance corporate performance [Tallon et al. (2016)]. ...
The study investigates how the alignment at the processing levels between information systems (IS) strategy, through strategy-as-practice approach, and innovation influences corporate performance (CP) under environmental uncertainty from 856 Brazilian firms by PLS-SEM. The results indicated that all approaches of alignment between IS strategy and innovation have strong influences on CP. The alignment with ambidextrous innovation had a 62% higher contribution on CP than alignment between exploitative innovations. Additionally, exploitative innovations had positive effects on CP under high hostility environments; and explorative and ambidextrous innovations had positive large and strong effects on CP under high dynamic environments.

... (Yoshikuni et al., 2018). Hence, integrating information systems into competition strategies, especially in the planning process, increases strategic awareness, allows for a thorough analysis of external factors, and strengthens competitive strategies (Yoshikuni et al., 2018). Yang et al. (2009) stated that information systems benefit a firm's innovativeness thanks to their features such as information search, cooperation, communication, learning, and prediction. ...
Considering SMEs' contributions to investment, employment, tax, and export, they play a vital role in the economy. Increasing competition, changes in customer expectations, and global market expansion can dramatically affect the sustainability and competitiveness of SMEs. Therefore, companies, trying to keep up with the changes in their environments and maintain their positions, are to constantly monitor their external environment, collect information and prepare alternative competition plans. Within the scope of this study, the effect of competition and information management strategies of SMEs on innovation and firm performance, along with the mediating effect of information systems, were investigated. Our findings indicate that competition and information management strategies positively affect the firm and innovation performance of the companies. It was also concluded that the information systems partially used mediated the relationship between strategy and performance, strengthening the existing relationship and improving firm performance.
... ITS is modeled to extent of IT use in support of business model and activities (Queiroz, 2017;Yayla & Hu, 2012) that focus on backing the business strategy, such as proactiveness, analysis, defensiveness, or reactiveness (Chan & Reich, 2007;Tallon & Pinsonneault, 2011;Tallon et al., 2019). Previous studies demonstrated that ITS enables direct and (or) indirect organizational capabilities to enhance firm performance (Queiroz, 2017;Sabherwal & Chan, 2001;Yayla & Hu, 2012;Yoshikuni, Favaretto, Albertin, & Meirelles, 2018). ...
For researchers and practitioners, there is an important central question to answer, how information technology (IT) governance can help organizations survive and thrive in constantly changing business environments. To address this issue, this study examines the influence of IT governance on dynamic capabilities to sustain corporate performance under environmental dynamism. Tests of the proposed model were performed using survey data from 147 Brazilian firms to support the hypotheses. The results demonstrated that IT governance is a core enabler of dynamic capabilities innovation and operational capabilities for corporate performance gains. The heterogeneity tests also showed that the firm's orientation strategy of prospector and analyzer, under conditions of high dynamism environmental, increased the value of IT governance to enable innovation capability, while the impact of IT governance-enabled operational capabilities under low dynamism, amplified the firm's orientation strategy of defender and reactor. For practical application, this study indicated that managers should be knowledgeable about how IT governance capability plays a fundamental role to enable dynamic capabilities and generate economic payoffs.
... Another study in Europe identified two reasons for the adoption of bimodal IT: agility and ambidexterity. It also indicated that, in the long term, the IT function fluctuates and reverts to a unimodal design (Haffke et al., 2017a(Haffke et al., , 2017bMalliard, 2017;Yoshikuni, Favaretto, Albertin, & Meirelles, 2018). ...
Advances in the use of information technology (IT) and the evolution of the increasingly strategic role of IT in business management are described and analyzed by research and by academic and applied literature. In view of the trends portrayed with the changes arising from technologies, this article focuses on the main indicators of ICT use in Brazilian companies and on a new type of IT management, a direct reflection of the ongoing digital transformation. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in Brazilian enterprises are periodically investigated by two study and research centers: the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br), under the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br); and the Center for Applied Information Technology (FGVcia), with the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV). The unit of analysis for both surveys is the company. However, in terms of methodology, target populations, data collection instruments, and sampling plans, they are quite distinct, as shown in Table 1. Nevertheless, as will be shown in this article, their results are consistent, coherent, and complementary. 1 Full professor of information technology at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation São Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV-EAESP); engineer, with master's degrees, PhDs other graduate-level degrees from FGV-EAESP, Harvard Business School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and the University of Texas at Austin. ... The theoretical literature reiterates that SIS and the appropriate and timely use of IT/IS effectively support the phases of strategic planning in order to maintain or gain competitive advantage and organizational performance Yoshikuni et al. (2018). Performance valuation is a vital mission for a decision -making unit (DMU) to find its weaknesses so that subsequent enhancements can be made. ...

... Customer performance is measured by client satisfaction with the quality of products action plans (Arvidsson et al., 2014;Kearns & Sabherwal, 2006;Leidner et al., 2011;Merali et al., 2012), coordinates work projects and support actions to implement strategy (Dameron et al., 2015;Maharaj & Brown, 2015;Newkirk & Lederer, 2006;Singh et al., 2002), helps strategic controls to compare performance against budgets and goals (Davenport et al., 2010;Kaplan & Norton, 2008;Rouhani et al., 2016;Sabherwal & Chan, 2001;Shollo & Galliers, 2016), and boosts competitive advantage. According to Yoshikuni, Favaretto, Albertin and Meirelles (2018) SIS incorporates the strategic planning process and facilitates the cooperation, analysis and participation of employees, enabling them to think about, analyze, deploy and follow strategic planning through the IT/IS portfolios. ...
... Several studies show that strategic IS improves firm performance in a stable economy such as the United States and European countries (Chan & Huff, 1992;Kim et al., 2011;Merali et al., 2012;Sabherwal & Chan, 2001;Teubner, 2013). Hence, this study posits that strategic IS enables capabilities and creates several benefits for all strategic planning phases (Chen et al., 2010;Johnson & Lederer, 2013;Leidner et al., 2011;Yoshikuni et al., 2018) to enhance firm performance in developing countries (Yayla & Hu, 2012). Thus, the following hypothesis is predicted for strategic IS related to firm performance: H1: Strategic IS positively affects firm performance. ...
... The dynamism dimension of environmental uncertainty relates to the rate at which a given environment changes (i.e., market volatility) (Mikalef & Pateli, 2017;Newkirk & Lederer, 2006;Schilke, 2014;Yoshikuni et al., 2018). High rates of environmental change make it difficult for managers to predict future events and their impact on the organization (Lumpkin & Dess, 2001). ...
The purpose of this article is to explore how the domains of turbulence scenario moderate the relationship between strategic information systems (IS) and firm performance (FP). This research conducts a quantitative survey-based study with partial least squares (PLS) technique employing a sample of 196 firms from different industries located in Brazil that operate under an uncertain environment during an economic crisis. The findings confirm the existence of strong effects in the relationship between strategic IS and firm performance. Essentially, this research further finds that this relationship (strategic IS -> FP) is particularly pronounced in uncertain hostile environments and in cases where GDP is strongly negative by three-way interaction. Thus, the research results helped organizations and managers understand SIS value in the strategy-as-practice approach to Brazilian environmental uncertainty.
Research highlights the significant impact of exploratory, exploitative, and ambidextrous innovation strategies on firm performance. Ambidextrous innovation is particularly effective, enhancing performance in both emerging and developed markets. However, the differential effects on growth and profitability in resource-constrained emerging markets are still not fully understood. This study employs panel data regression to analyze the influence of these innovation strategies on 1047 Colombian manufacturing firms from 2007 to 2018, with a specific focus on the moderating role of diverse knowledge sources. Findings indicate that ambidextrous innovation positively correlates with both growth and profitability. In contrast, firms focusing solely on either exploratory or exploitative strategies experience negative impacts on domestic growth. The integration of a broad range of knowledge sources further amplifies the positive effects of ambidextrous innovation. This research provides valuable insights for effectively leveraging innovation strategies in emerging markets, offering a strategic framework for firms and policymakers in resource-constrained environments.
