Technological development has transformed academic publication over the past two
decades and new publication models, especially Open Access, have captured an important part of the publishing market, traditionally dominated by the Subscription publication model. Although Health Sciences have been one of the leading fields promoting Open Access, the...

... rest of the determinants are less relevant (see Table 1). When the decision is restricted to an Open Access journal, dissemination and visibility were the major selection criteria, with a mean of 3.99 (SD = 1.16), followed by impact factor (mean = 3.86, SD = 1.21), academic recognition and, lastly, the cost of publication (see Table 2). Given the dilemma of choosing between two journals, subscription and Open Access, both with the same topic, academic recognition and cost of publication, if the Subscription journal has an impact factor equal to 1, the medical researcher would prefer to publish in the Open Access journal if it has an impact factor equal to 1.35 (SD = 0.47). ...Context 2
... relation remains significant when all possible correlates are considered together (column 3). Table A2 (see Appendix B) analyzes the factors that correlate with the assessment that the researcher does about her/his experience with Open Access publications. The regression (1) relates this assessment to how the researcher values the different aspects of a journal. ...Similar publications

Scientists spend a substantial amount of their time engaging with the primary literature: reading, constructing, reviewing and revising it. Yet, the role of primary literature is generally absent from the development of scientific inquiry skills in the pre-college science classroom, thus undermining a true understanding of what it means to do scien...

... Publishing models (i.e., open access or subscription) were important criteria for journal selection (L opez- Vergara et al., 2020). The rigorousness of production standards (e.g., copy editing or typesetting) was also mentioned in primary studies. ...
... For example, facilitating conditions and social influence were significant factors in journal selection (e.g., Cheung, 2008;Khalili & Singh, 2012). Acceptance likelihood, reputation, and dissemination capability were also strong predictors of authors' submission behaviour (Bröchner & Björk, 2008;L opez-Vergara et al., 2020). The outcomes of submission behaviour included authors' reactions to the process of journal information acquisition and journal evaluation (i.e., providing feedback). ...
... submission pressure(Mansouri Nejad et al., 2019).Policies include two aspects. First, they provide authors with journal recommendations, such as journals in national reference lists (Boukacem-Zeghmouri et al., 2018), recommendations from author affiliations (e.g., L opez-Vergara et al., 2020), and recommendations from conferences(Cobey et al., 2019), all of which have an impact on the authors' journal selection. ...
As an important medium of science communication, academic journals promote the flow and growth of scientific knowledge. To examine the influence of factors on authors' choice of a journal, this paper reviews the literature on journal selection. A systematic review and critical interpretive synthesis methods were used in this study. A total of 132 articles were included and the content characteristics were extracted. Then, based on behavioural decision theory, the extracted data on journal selection factors were synthesized based on critical interpretive synthesis principles. Four synthetic constructs emerged: factors related to information acquisition, factors related to journal evaluation, factors related to submission outcome feedback, and factors related to the authors' backgrounds. The articles revealed that factors related to journal information acquisition and journal evaluation directly influenced authors' submission behaviour, while factors related to authors' backgrounds were moderating variables. Future research should focus on the processes of manuscript‐submission behaviour, to examine the relationships between the factors and identify the mechanisms.
... According to the findings of previous studies, OA adoption depends widely on institutional policies and structures, rewards, professional recognition, funding and financial support, personal experiences, journals' reputation among peers, and journal recommendation by colleagues (Boukacem-Zeghmouri et al., 2018;Claudio-González & Villarroya, 2015;Fredriksson, 2020;López-Vergara et al., 2020;Narayan et al., 2018;Serrano-Vicente et al., 2016;Zhu, 2020). It is also associated with scientists and scholars' awareness of OA policies of their organizations, knowledge about OA repositories, attitudes, and previous experiences of green and gold OA publishing (Zhu, 2017(Zhu, , 2020. ...
... The positive opinions do not necessarily correspond to the adoption of OA (Serrano-Vicente et al., 2016), given the existing concerns and problems. Especially, the high costs of publishing in OA journals, the probability of plagiarism, and the journals' quality and credibility are found among the main concerns of researchers and authors hindering them from publishing in OA outlets (Fredriksson, 2020;Halevi & Walsh, 2021;López-Vergara et al., 2020;Rodriguez, 2014;Waller et al., 2013). They are also concerned about the quality of peer review and the impact factors of the journals (Feenstra & López-Cózar, 2021;Nagaraj & Bhandi, 2017;Togia & Korobili, 2014). ...
... Therefore, the finding urges innovative approaches, and solutions via e.g. reducing APCs as a strategy to sustain the gold model (López-Vergara et al. 2020;2021), devising alternative mechanisms to counteract the effect of APC-based models on journal quality (van Vlokhoven, 2019) and ensuring transparency of peer-review process as an indicator of peer-review quality (Wicherts, 2016). It also calls for measures to enhance awareness, discuss conflicting perceptions and dispel suspicions, via e.g. ...
The present study aimed to explore how tweeters’ opinions about open access publishing and its main features evolved over time. Using a quantitative content analysis method through an opinion mining approach, it explored a sample of English tweets on open access posted from 2007 to December 2019. The main terms related to open access were first identified through reviewing the related literature and were then categorized into five features including “costs & funding”, “impact”, “models”, “publishing & publications”, and “quality & quality control”. The terms were composed in the form of search formulae. The searches on Twitter led to retrieving 629,123 tweets. A cleansing process was carried out to remove duplicates, non-English, and low-relevant tweets. The final sample reached 80,629 tweets. The tweets were then tagged with the five features. The KNIME data mining tool and SentiStrength were used respectively for processing the tweets' contents and calculating their opinion scores. According to the results, the open-access-related tweets have been growing based on a sigmoidal model. They were mostly neutral and opinion tweets were far lower in number. The tweets in different polarities have been increasing based on a power-law model, with the negative tweets experiencing a disproportionately higher increase. The positive and negative opinions have remained almost stable in strength, with the former being stronger. The results were almost in line with the previous surveys confirming the co-existence of the positive and negative attitudes about open access. However, the social sphere has been gradually becoming more negative. As attitudes are likely to go viral on social networks, and thereby affect users’ perceptions and behaviors, the results call for devising appropriate measures to empower the movement and to find solutions for the problems and concerns leading to the negative opinions.
... In a previous article [13], we conducted a similar survey among researchers in the medical field. In the current study, we explored the publication decisions of economics and business researchers and compared our results to the previous ones. ...
... This has been an obstacle to understanding the perspectives of researchers in the fields of economics and business. In Spain, works reviewed include different disciplines [13,17], without focusing on the characteristics inherent to economics and business. A previous study in the same discipline ran a survey in 2012 [9], before institutions established specific aims at extending open access, and without delving into the publication peculiarities in Spain. ...
... We used the survey available in Reference [13]. The form used for the survey is divided into four sections. ...
Public research policies have been promoting open-access publication in recent years as an adequate model for the dissemination of scientific knowledge. However, depending on the disciplines, its use is very diverse. This study explores the determinants of open-access publication among academic researchers of economics and business, as well as their assessment of different economic measures focused on publication stimulus. To do so, a survey of Spanish business and economics researchers was conducted. They reported an average of 19% of their publications in open-access journals, hybrids or fully Gold Route open access. Almost 80% of the researchers foresee a future increase in the volume of open-access publications. When determining where to publish their research results, the main criterion for the selection of a scientific journal is the impact factor. Regarding open access, the most valued aspect is the visibility and dissemination it provides. Although the cost of publication is not the most relevant criterion in the choice of a journal, three out of four researchers consider that a reduction in fees and an increase in funding are measures that would boost the open-access model.
... Figure 4 Various studies analyse the advantage given to the papers by the open access status, some consider that it accelerates the recognition and dissemination of the research (althouh controversial) [19], by receiving about 18% more citations that othervise expected [20]. In the health science researchers tend to value more the open access publications [21]. The COVID research papers evaluated in this study were mainly, open access or early access papers and were published in fi rst or second quartile journals. ...
Research published on COVID-19 pandemic offers the unexpected opportunity to overcome some of the challenges for both the altmetrics and the bibliometrics indicators with respect to the heterogeneity of the data under evaluation and it presents us with a case study for investigating the correlation among altmetrics and scientific impact indicators. There is extensive early research on COVID-19, some of them highly cited and classified as hot papers in Web of Science. In this study 126 journal articles on early COVID-19 research, indexed in Web of Science were analyzed to determine if the altmetrics are related to the scientific impact of the paper, measured by peer assessment and bibliometric indicators. Relationships and underlying dimensions of the traditional measurements and altmetrics are investigated through principal component analysis, factor analysis and correlations. Overall, the results show that Mendeley counts (reads) indicate their potential use for predicting WoS citations, the Altmetric attention score, shows a relatively low correlation with the later WoS citations, while Google Scholar, while used with caution, can be used as a predictor of future citations counts in WoS.
