A building design of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) was presented in the article. The construction and operating principle of a wind turbine were described therein. Two VAWT turbine models were compared, i.a. Darrieus and Lenz2, taking their strengths and weaknesses into consideration. 3D solid models of turbine components were presented with t...

The project introduced a lot of innovation, for example he combined Darrieus turbine working on the aerodynamic lift force and Savonius turbine relying on the drag (see Fig 5). Since wind is a governing design load for various structures, an accurate simulation of the aerodynamics will reduce the uncertainty associated with wind load evaluation on structures, and consequently their cost. Thus, highly accurate and reliable computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is required to simulate and evaluate the wind behaviour f...

... In the last decade, vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have been gaining increasing interest among researchers and scientists due to their important features, such as multidirectional operation [1], simple blade geometry [2,3], low generated noise [4], and easy access to ground-based generators [5]. In addition, they have simple designs and cope better with turbulence [6]. ...
... Before starting the wind turbine, while it is not in operation, the bearing node is initially adjusted to relieve the plain bearing. Using the adjusting screw (10), the lever (3) and the intermediate element (4), causes exerting pressure on the upper part of the rolling bearing raceway (5). The turbine shaft is lifted and, at the same time, the load is added to the rolling bearing (7) and the plain bearing (6) is relieved, as a lubrication gap is created between the conical sliding surfaces of the bearing (6). ...
... Therefore, only the rolling bearing (7) works when starting the turbine. As the rotational speed of the turbine shaft increases, as a result of the centrifugal force acting on the lever (3) with a large inertial weight (8), the pressure of the lever (3) on the upper part of the rolling bearing raceway (5) decreases. This part is pulled up by the spring (9), relieving the load on the intermediate element (4) and the rolling bearing itself (7). ...

The article contains a description of the design solutions proposed by the authors for a hybrid wind turbine bearing, in which the sliding part takes over the load to the turbine shaft after reaching the shaft rotation speed, ensuring hydrodynamic lubrication of the plain bearing and relieving the rolling bearing. This allows for low starting resistance of the power plant and ensures quiet operation during use. Two conceptual solutions of a hybrid bearing were presented, differing in the shape of the plain bearing journal. A mechanism for automatic switching of the load between a rolling and a plain bearing was developed. A solid simulation model of this mechanism was built in the Autodesk Inventor—Dynamic Simulation software Inventor Professional 2023 environment, and its operation was simulated. The results confirmed the usefulness of using this design in shaft-bearing systems of wind turbines with a vertical axis of rotation. Based on the simulation, the speed at which the thrust roller bearing will be released was determined. Technical parameters of a plain bearing with a spherical journal shape were calculated. The height of the lubrication gap and the shaft rotational speed at which the bearing load capacity index reaches a critical value were determined.

Abstract Presently, in a city land cost for a solar plant to be Setup is very high. An innovative idea of hybrid solar Si (silicon) PV system that contains a Silicon PV (PV = photovoltaic) tree embedded with vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is proposed in this paper. PV tree which acts as a vertical support, and solar panels are placed in such a manner they appear as leaves of a tree. They are oriented towards south east, south and south west directions this makes the solar panel to be oriented towards the sun to capture maximum sun light. Secondly, a vertical axis wind turbine has been embedded on the top of PV tree to capture the energy from the flowing wind. The hybrid solar Si PV system is generally less noisy and takes full advantage of the wind spiraling effect upon hitting an object in its path. The two sources for generating electricity are contained in the same structure, and operate simultaneously yet independently of one another from renewable energy sources such as the wind and the sun energy. Thus, fusion of smartly designed hybrid solar Si PV system helps us to meet the growing power demand of our growing cites and also can increase power production of the renewable system by 50.8% compared to flat PV system. The development of underwater vehicles is facing the problem of sustainable energy supply. This study introduces a small water turbine, the Lenz turbine, for energy generation from the ocean currents which will provide energy for the underwater vehicles. Computational fluid dynamics simulations of the effect of geometric parameters, including the blade radius, chord length, and pitch angle, on the performance of the turbine are conducted. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations are numerically solved with a sliding mesh method. Thirteen sets of tests in total are performed at different values of tip-speed ratios. The tests are divided into three groups to study the effect of the three parameters mentioned above, separately. The obtained power coefficients, coefficient of torque, and the dynamic torque on a blade are then compared in each group of tests. Pressure contours and velocity contours are given to explain the reason how the geometric parameters affect the rotor performance.
