Individuals need a variety of information when performing their personal processes. However, companies typically know little about the underlying individual demand patterns in these processes. Conceptualizing information demand patterns of individuals is expected to allow for using these as foundation to extend the traditional internal information logistic perspective of companies. Digital options could then be used to align individual and organizational information leading not only to new product and service offers, but also to new work structures in organizations. Thus, we extend prior literature regarding business process management and information logistics by highlighting how information demand patterns (IDP) have to be adapted to individual processes. Our exploratory approach is to demonstrate conceptually the conditions and implications of individual IDPs.

Modern organizations face the challenge of having to manage an increasing amount of information. The resulting information overload leads more and more to problems in decision making with potentially negative economic consequences. Decision-makers and knowledge intensive workers are especially affected. To address this problem, information demand patterns were proposed which capture organizational knowledge about the information demand of single roles. This work extends the concept of information demand patterns from single roles to teams. Using the knowledge intensive field of project management, the paper shows how to apply the concept of information demand patterns for a whole team. The contributions of this work are (1) the methodical approach to develop information demand patterns for teams, (2) an actual information demand pattern for a steering committee in the context of project management, (3) reflections on the differences between role patterns and team patterns.

Organizations are faced today with an increasing amount of information. This information overload leads more and more to wrong decisions and has therefore economic consequences. Especially decision-makers and knowledge intensive workers are affected. This work introduces information demand pattern for teams in order to improve the information flow in the knowledge intensive field of project management. The contributions of this work are (1) the methodological description how to develop information demand pattern for teams, (2) the presentation of an information demand pattern for a steering committee in the context of project management and (3) general advises on information demand pattern and information demand analysis.

Today e-mail communication information is widely used in organizations to distribute information. The increasing volume of received e- mails hinders an efficient work. It becomes more and more difficult to identify relevant e-mails inside this enormous volume of information. This work presents a solution in a multi-user environment by improving an established e- mail client extension based on information demand pattern with a recommendation system. The contributions of this work are (1) the concept and implementation of the solution for a single-user environment using information demand pattern, (2) the concept and architecture to use the solution in a multi- user environment (3) a detailed technical description about the proposed solutions.

Work presented in this paper originates from the field of information logistics and aims at the reduction of information overload. Among the approaches for reducing information overload, the concept of information demand patterns (IDP) was developed for capturing organizational knowledge on how to improve information flow in enterprises. The paper investigates how the structure of IDPs is perceived by potential users and which enhancements of the structure could be made for improving content and quality of IDPs. For this purpose, an investigation including two steps is performed. The first step involves students in a university course who apply the IDP structure for developing IDP candidate descriptions. The intention is to explore whether the IDP structure reached a level of maturity to transfer it to non-experts in the IDP field. The second step evaluates the IDP developed by the students with respect to the quality of the different parts of the IDP structure. The conclusion of the investigation is that the IDP structure in general is applicable and useful, but consistency between the different IDP parts needs to be improved by providing aids and guidelines.

All organisations have to keep improving different aspects of their business in order to survive in their business area. This improvement can be done in different ways, including as business and IT alignment. There exist different ways of performing business and IT alignment, such as applying EMMs. Enterprise Modelling (EM) is an area that has been built up with the intention of improving business practice and management. An Enterprise Modelling Method (EMM) is a systematic way of building models that are to be used for planning improvements. For this purpose, it is needed to make an evaluation of methods capabilities in supporting business and IT alignment. According to all above, the results of this paper include a list of EMMs that are applicable in business and IT alignment.

Enterprise Modeling (EM) has established itself as a valuable instrument for various purposes related to organizational development, such as designing or redesigning the business, eliciting requirements for information systems, capturing and reasoning about organizational knowledge. A notable characteristic of EM is its collaborative way of stakeholder involvement in modeling. Much of the success of projects using EM depends on how the EM process is organized and on the competence level of the expert responsible for the EM approach. This paper analyses what are the competence needs for the method expert and what competences are needed in the different steps in the EM process. The EM process described consists of activities for project inception and planning, conducting modeling sessions, and delivering a result that can be taken up by a subsequent implementation project. Two main competence areas are discussed in relation to the EM process – competences related to modeling and competences related to managing EM projects.

Enterprise Modeling (EM) has two main purposes: (1) Developing the business, which entails developing business vision, strategies, redesigning the way the business operates, developing the supporting information systems, etc., and (2) ensuring the quality of the business where the focus is on sharing the knowledge about the business, its vision and the way it operates, and ensuring the acceptance of business decisions through committing the stakeholders to the decisions made. In addition, EM has also shown to be useful as a general tool for articulating, discussing, and solving organizational problems. Based on a number of case studies, interviews and observations this chapter defines what is required from EM when adopted for these purposes and intentions respectively. More precisely, it addresses the following types of requirements: documents and models required as input, models that should be developed, requirements on the modeling language, requirements on the modeling process, tool requirements and model quality requirements. The defined requirements are then discussed taking a specific EM method, Enterprise Knowledge Development (EKD) as example.

Among the many activities to be performed in the context of managing research and development projects preparing a quote for a call for tender can be considered as in particular information-intense. Some industrial methods and standards support the implementation of well-defined and efficient project management (PM). However, these guidelines primarily focus on work procedures and are not very detailed for quote preparation. This paper contributes to the area by proposing information demand patterns as a means to capture organizational knowledge about the desired information flow in project management with specific focus on quote preparation. The intention is to avoid wrong decisions, delayed actions and missing information in quotes caused by insufficient information supply. The contributions of the paper are (1) the concept of information demand pattern in the context of PM, (2) the information demand pattern for the role of a "quote responsible", and (3) lessons learned from validation.
