ResearchGate is the professional network for scientists and researchers. Over 20 million members from all over the world use it to share, discover, and discuss research. We're guided by our mission to connect the world of science and make research open to all.

DevOps Engineer/Developer Platform Engineering (m/f/d)

This is a full-time position based in Germany. Our headquarters are in Berlin and we support a hybrid home office/in person approach to work.

The world of science is becoming more and more digital. Open access science is becoming the norm.

As DevOps Engineer, you will help us power up the platform that delivers ResearchGate’s large product to scientists all over the world and that supports ResearchGates’s product and data engineering teams. ResearchGate’s platform operates on ~700 servers and handles ~6k requests per second to 20+ million users all over the world - 84 of them are Nobel laureates!

You're a team player with a curious and pragmatic attitude, who enjoys learning and taking on new challenges. You will bring your experiences, best practices, and a collaborative attitude to help drive and influence DevOps initiatives. You can effectively communicate with our product and data teams to orchestrate the creation of solutions that can scale.

The team

Operating a platform with more than 20 million users is no small task. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes within our Platform team to keep ResearchGate up and running for members. To name a few of the team’s responsibilities: observability, CI/CD, Kubernetes, server provisioning and configuration, cloud, databases, security and developer tooling. We build and operate solutions up to petabyte scale.

In the DevOps team there is a great deal of combined experience and knowledge across infrastructure and developer enablement topics, with much of the team having a tenure of over 3 years at ResearchGate.

We move quickly but in a deliberate way. That means delivering on an annual platform engineering strategy, quarterly OKRs, and agile sprints. It also means being ready to respond to new opportunities and quickly handle problems. We are constantly looking to improve our platform, including by adopting and properly integrating mature and scalable technologies to our stack.

What you will do

  • Design, develop and scale infrastructure-as-code
  • Strengthen our application and environment security, applying standards and best practices
  • Deploy and maintain DevOps platform infrastructure across multiple environments
  • Iterate on best practices to increase the quality & velocity of deployments
  • Implement metrics, dashboards and alerts to identify technical problems
  • Measure the performance and availability of our technical platform
  • Have on call responsibilities in rotation with the engineering team
  • Sustain and improve the process of knowledge sharing throughout the engineering team

What we would like you to bring to the team

  • Experience maintaining and deploying highly-available, fault-tolerant systems at scale
  • Familiar with industry best practices for system hardening and configuration management
  • Experience with at-scale on-prem platforms, databases, microservice architectures, web infrastructure, developer tooling and/or AWS (or other) cloud
  • Continuously evaluate existing systems with industry standards, and make recommendations for improvement
  • Collaborative team spirit
  • Effective communication skills

Hybrid remote work
We are a fully hybrid-remote company. Team members can freely choose to work from home anywhere in Germany or from the office. Our office is in the heart of Berlin - one of the most exciting cities in the world and a place where people from all walks of life feel welcome. Our team tries to come together as a team, for in person meetups, on a regular basis (travel reimbursement for employees living outside Berlin is possible in certain situations).

Our story

ResearchGate was founded in 2008 by three friends who believed it was possible to connect all of the world’s scientists.

By 2015, four complete rounds of financing had fueled ResearchGate’s growth and investors included Benchmark Capital, Founders Fund, Bill Gates, Tenaya Capital, Goldman Sachs, Wellcome Trust, and Four Rivers Group.

Today, 20 million members connect on the network, collaborate, and share their research. They report their research as it happens and get feedback to make faster progress, post questions and answers, and find new jobs that fit their interest and research profiles.

Our goal is to connect the world of science and make research open to all.

Hiring Process

Our hiring process is transparent and quick. We aim to have “just enough” process that we all can make an informed decision whether it’s a mutual fit.
