While the literature commonly prevails a positive outlook on how Industry 4.0 (I4.0) enhances sustainability, there exists an understudied aspect-the darker side of I4.0-that has negative implications and has not yet been systematically addressed. This research aims to challenge the assumption of a sustainable I4.0 by highlighting the potential neg...
Organizations across the globe are devising novel approaches to strive for carbon neutrality. Global institutions have manifested the critical need to develop reasonable strategies in every sector to mitigate the impending issues of excessive anthropogenic carbon emission and, in consequence, climate change. World‑leading econo- mies have initiated...
The rise of globalization and digitization provoked textile and apparel industries worldwide to change their traditional business models. The textile and apparel manufacturing industries are ushering towards adopting novel concepts, viz. smart technologies (ST) due to the advent of industry 4.0 and circular economy (CE) to make their supply chains...
The effective management of the manufacturing process can help improve the manufacturing competitiveness of the firm,
which can, in turn, provide a firm with global competitiveness. However, the obstacles in the process due to the active bottlenecks
or other impediments to process flow result in the obstruction to material flow and reduce the overa...
A well-determined manufacturing system helps organisations achieve a desired competitive advantage. So, the manufacturing system selection concerns the critical decision of manufacturing strategy deployment. In the present era of industry 4.0, there exist four traditional manufacturing systems (TMS) (i.e. job-shop, batch-shop, mass, and continuous)...
Purpose
This research identifies the enablers for implementing circular supply chains (CSCEs) and analyzes interrelationships between them to quantify their driving and dependence power to understand the critical CSCEs.
Design/methodology/approach
Initially, 10 CSCEs are identified for the Indian apparel industries through an extant literature rev...
Additive manufacturing systems (AMS) have been realized as one of the cutting-edge technologies that can revolutionize the traditional way of producing goods. It is expected that by deploying AMS, the manufacturing firms can effectively manage the trade-off between volume-variety and cost-flexibility. This study is developed at the outset to explor...
The concept of Theory of Constraints (TOC) was introduced by Eliyahu Goldratt, an Israeli Physicist, in his book THE GOAL in 1984. TOC is a management philosophy that focuses on the management of the constraint that limits the performance of a system. Although TOC has benefited organizations within many domains, namely – manufacturing, supply chain...
Purpose
The role of industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies for organizations to achieve a competitive advantage and mitigate disruptive emergency situations are well exhibited in literature. However, more light needs to be thrown into implementing I4.0 technologies to digitally transform organizations. This paper introduces a novel framework for formulat...
The ever-happening disruptive events interrupt the operationalisation of manufacturing organisations resulting in stalling the production flow and depleting societies with products. Advancements in cutting-edge technologies, viz. blockchain, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, digital twin, etc. have attracted the practitioners’ attention to...
Humanitarian supply chains (HSC) have vital significance in mitigating different disruptive supply chain risks caused due to natural or man-made activities such as tsunami, earthquakes, flooding, warfare, or the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Each kind of disaster poses a unique set of challenges to the operationalization of HSC. This study attempts to...
Organizations strive to find new ways to manage the production of strategic spare parts with unanticipated demand and high delivery time. Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a revolutionary technology that effectively serves such needs by producing compatible spare parts in a shorter period without holding inventories. Although the promising benefits of...
Purpose
The study attempts to develop a multi-product multi-period (MPMP) aggregate production plan (APP) to fulfill the customers' demand in terms of throughput and lead time for achieving market competence.
Design/methodology/approach
This research proposes an integrated Fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP), multi-objective linear programmi...
Purpose
This study provides a systematic review of the literature within the manufacturing strategy (MS) domain focusing on the congruence aspect of different strategic functions to determine the state-of-the-art research progression and the trend of publications.
Design/methodology/approach
We have adopted a five-stage review methodology consisti...
Purpose – This research prioritizes the critical supply chain risks (SCRs) and determines risk mitigation strategies (RMSs) for the Indian apparel industry to alleviate the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic disruption.
Design/methodology/approach – Initially, twenty-three SCRs within the apparel industry are identified through an extant literature rev...
Several attempts are needed to choose the most compatible production system for achieving the desired manufacturing outputs. The significant role of manufacturing strategy deployment is selecting the production system best suited for a manufacturing firm. The appropriately chosen production system (strategic process choice) facilitates to produce “...
Improved productivity, resource utilization, and efficiency are crucial for the industries working with batch production systems and have attracted growing interest from academia and practice. Five focusing steps approach (FFS) of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) is considered a reliable solution to achieve these ends by effectively elevating the co...
Manufacturing strategy is an essential aspect of production and operations management discipline. It plays a crucial role in the success of business strategy by configuring manufacturing decisions effectively to achieve the firm's competitive advantage in the marketplace. From the advent of the manufacturing strategy concept, it has advanced immens...
Product return is a critical issue due to the uncertainty associated with the price, demand, and quality of the product. Thus, businesses must improve their information transparency to administer the product return behaviour of the end-user. Different studies so far have contributed to developing solutions to manage product return issues. This pape...
Purpose
This study attempts to identify the supply chain risks (SCRs) induced during the COVID-19 disruption in an Indian handloom saree industry and determine suitable risk mitigation strategies (RMSs) to overcome the impact of the epidemic disruption.
Design/methodology/approach
This work determined 11 SCRs through an extensive literature review...
Purpose
This study aims at reviewing the articles on the themes of manufacturing strategy (MS) published in “Benchmarking: An International Journal (BIJ)” and investigating the trends of publication for future research.
Design/methodology/approach
Five-stage methodology to conduct a literature review is adopted comprising: (1) article collection,...
Additive manufacturing (AM) has huge benefits over traditional manufacturing, viz. cost saving, lesser product development time and lead time. AM easily produces complex geometry. However, selecting the right AM process/machine compatible for part as per customers’ specification and manage manufacturability and functionality is a critical issue. Th...
