SUMMARY: The issue is expected to group in a same pot a series of review/research papers focused on both: theory and technical aspects of Parallel Computing and HPC as well as their applications to study structure-function relationships in drug, targets, and organs modelling. In all cases, the works are expected to focus the informatic basis aspects in a language as much accesible as possible to chemists, biologists, biochemists, etc. On the other hands, applications are expected to deal with the use of Parallel Comput and HPC to speed up drug, target, and organ modelling/discovery. We desire the different authors discuss some of the following topics: (1) Using HPC & Parallel Comput to study structure-property relationships Docking studies of Drug-Protein, Drug-RNA, Protein-Protein, and Protein-RNA complexes for discovery of new drugs or drug targets. (2) Using HPC & Parallel Comput to study structure-property relationships in Complex Networks in Metabolomics, Proteomics, Genomics, for discovery of new drugs or drug targets. (3) Using HPC & Parallel Comput to study structure-property relationships in organ modelling, including Brain Connectome, Cardiovascular organs modelling, and applications in discovery of CNS and Cardiovascular drugs, Bioengineering, etc. (4) Using HPC & Parallel Comput to train/validate and run Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and other Machine Learning techniques for High Throughput Screening of drugs in combinatorial libraries of compounds. Another way to pretreat membranes is with ovalbumin or poly-l-lysine, then rinse with PBS. Most membrane filters have a nominal pore size achieved through a meshwork of polymer fibers. You might try Nuclepore filters (polycarbonate) with a smooth surface and etched, neat holes; and Whatman makes PTFE (Teflon) filters in various pore sizes (not pleasant to work with, IMHO). Do you achieve the same loss in protein concentration via centrifugation? That means a better disruption/solubilization method could get more of the monomer into solution. Have you tried sonication?

It happen to me as someone mentioned, concerning a problem with the equipment, and the plate was in the freezer during 2h. I ran that plate and another one similar, and results were different.

Luca, I will check the papers to get a better knowledge of the way the remotely sensed information is typically assimilated into the models, since I have not been working much on this topic yet (I am brainstorming for an upcoming proposal). You seem to have done a lot of work on this. What is your take on the issue Lorenzo was talking about above, i.e., the added value of assimilating soil moisture information from bands other than L-band (and therefore probably containing information on shallower soil. Do you see any advantage?

I can only refer you to Pinker et al for a detailed discussion as to why the concept of free will is not necessary as a foundation for social morality. Perhaps we can agree to disagree on this as well as your apparent claim that consciousness entails free will. I likewise see no merit in responding to dramatic innuendos about the evils of the science and consequential social collapse.. I was mainly curious however, as to whether or not you agreed that there was no need to use the ambiguous word God if nature alone was seen to be able to fulfill the job description- as I seemed to have recalled that you had previously suggested reading a text by substituting the word "universe" for "God." Winifred: I gather your drift, but is there any neuroscientific evidence showing, for example, some sort of heightened activity when such qualia loop might occur? This idea of looping reminds me of humans ability to assess and thus resist its own instincts....In this sense the neuroscientists metaphorical analogizing of Freud's internalized superego to the cerebral lobe (higher thinking) makes sense if we are trying to distinguish humans from animals: some animals (perhaps rabbits, dogs, horses, sheep) can virtually eat themselves to death, esp. if this isn't prevented through vomiting. Humans, when they want to, can observe this problem and eat sensibly. According to Pinker we have a long list of reflexes/instincts that we can choose to override...there are several competing controllers in the brain (multifarious cognitive dissonance). So yes, I would imagine that it might be possible that human consciousness can be self-reflective (if that is your drift) to the point where human consciousness reached some new ontological height ( a la, for example, Hegel or Niet. or Heidegger's visions). Perhaps this is not only a feature, but a basis for individual conscience and free will...who knows...it seems very conjectural and unverifiable. But, to harp on my previous point, any such outcome would not be miraculous or outside of nature, and like any magicians trick, would follow smoothly from the nature of the background events surrounding it.

An agent will need to have a mean to act and to sense but it will have to sense and act in order to achieve a goal and it will have to have not only a recipy to achieve a goal like a stupid servo-mechanism but a true will or desire of its own. It should care, truly care of about its type of life, will to survive and truly feel pain and sadness and not doing that in a zombie manner. So this type of life has to be build onto a life dynanic similar to our type of life. To test this life dynamic would require a test where we judge if the agent truly care for his life, a kind of survival turing test.

You are going to accept, that there is a free lunch of energy (sun energy), but then you change the argument to something like, at the moment we are not living in a sustainable world and that economists ignore that. That is wrong, no economist ever stated that we have a guarantee for any standard of living. Do you know how oil originate? From plants, plants can only grow with the help of photosynthesis and for that sunlight is necessary. The same holds for all other fossil fuels, as the name is saying and plants which can be combusted. So that is not a perpetual mobile, we receive something for free and exogenously. To make it once again obvious that nothing has an absolute value, please note the following. If I would be Robison Crusoe living alone on an island in the South Pacific; what is then the value of an oil stock I would find? The value would be zero, because I would have no use for it and it has no utility for me, and there is no one else who is willing to buy it (maybe by offering his labor time or what however). The same story could be applied to humans in the stone age, because of missing knowledge and technology they could not use it; probably oil did not had any value for them.

If, on the other hand, you really have two different cost functions but the same variable, then there is no relationship between the two, since the minima of f and g could be in very different places, so the minimum of the sum could be anywhere

Raspberry pi is basically a computer. Arduino is more like microcontroller with interface hardware for you to experiment with. Arduino is more robust to handle abuse such as a wiring mistake one can make in a project. Raspberry Pi, on other hand, expect you to provide voltages that it is designed for. It can also be damaged by electrostatic if not handled properly. Like Gary Felerbach said, arduino needs another pc to let you program arduino. Raspberry Pi is a complete pc that can be interfaced with outside world (if you know what you are doing). Also it can be easily converted into a mini-server. If you are first timer, go for arduino, then for raspberry pi once you get experience.

There are some examples of hacking into a car through the entertainment system, and hijacking medical equipment (insulin pumps, etc.), so there is a real issue there, but so far there doesn't seem to be enough reward compared to the effort (except, apparently, there is a big deal in europe of people hacking into their own cars to change the mileage and driving history, after they have driven their cars to ruin, so they can take advantage of the warranties to get new parts) i don't have access to the relevant references just now, but i can find them later on

Yes, the North Atlantic groundfish stocks, including cod and haddock. They have a quota for the industrial trawler fleet, and a quota for the fixed gear (longline) fleet. The reason they do that is to keep the them independent. If the industrial trawler fleet could buy quota from the fixed gear fleet, the longliners would be all bought up pretty quick, because the trawlers are company owned and have more capital to work with. They treat them as separate to avoid this. This is for Georges Bank cod and haddock especially. So the industrial fleet and artisanal fleets are each allocated separate total allowable catches (TACs). But first the full TAC is calculated by government, and then it is split up among the industrial and artisanal If annual catches are higher than what is biologically "sustainable", it could be because of a push from one or both sectors. In Maine, (USA), industry has their own scientists that push for higher TACs with their own biological models. They debate the biology, and argue for higher quotas. It seems that when quota becomes the policy, the debate centers on how big that allocation is going to be.
