This such a good question, and the answer should be - a strong one. Social media, whether it be via a lab Facebook page, or twitter account, or blog is such a great way to communicate with the public at large. Of course the caveat is that you need to be able to accurately communicate your message in an interesting manner. Science needs to (further) embrace social media as a way for scientists to directly communicate with the public. I try to share interesting research related news and events via twitter ( https://twitter.com/jgryall ) and I follow a number of great scientists (see Dr. Darren Saunders @whereisdaz, Dave Hughes @HughesDC_MCMP, and Dr Krystal @dr_krystal) who regularly contribute random thoughts, an interesting result, an interesting paper recently published etc. For those who dislike the 140 character limit, a lab blog (or website) is a great way to engage the public as well as other scientists. On my blog ( www.jgryall.wordpress.com ) I discuss my research on the metabolic reprogramming of stem cells, but I also provide detailed methods for techniques that I use. Blogging has allowed me to interact with people from Peru to India, to Saudi Arabia. I think that we are really building towards a dramatic shift in the way we publish and disseminate our research results, and social media are likely to play a big role. I think that sites like ResearchGate are also likely to play an important role in Science2.0

Did you have recovery data of your target compounds and it retained well on C-18? For UPLC, the cleanliness of the sample is very important so I still recommend any cleanup procedure. If your target compound size is much different from major matrices, sephadex cleanup is a good recovery method.

Mimicry is basically the mechanism in which a particular organism conceals its identification by copying other animals that are poisonous, or could cause harm to the predator. By copying the poisonous species' morphological and behavioral characteristics, these types of animals would experience minimal predatory pressure. In some cases, animals make use of a type of mimicry which is mullerian mimicry, in which a poisonous animal copies another poisonous species. This would actually be an advantage for a higher range of predators that would avoid eating this species. An example would be the Heliconius butterflies in which there is a similarity between the warning signals and colors of different species.

Hello, Jinnan! Disturbances are inevitable phenomena that occur in ecosystems and the ability to revert back to the original conditions after undergoing change is the measure of resilience. Resilience can be measured by two factors -- elasticity and amplitude. Elasticity is the rate at which an ecosystem returns to each original conditions, while amplitude denotes the "limit" up to which the ecosystem can endure for it to be able to go back to its previous state. Some ecosystems have higher amplitudes, meaning they can tolerate higher amounts of disturbance and can bounce back to their initial state. On the other hand, some ecosystems are sensitive to disturbances that even a minimal disturbance may cause them to not be able to revert to their original conditions. The resilience measure, along with other stability factors are important in understanding the structure and dynamics of the community and the ecosystem.

Are these perbrominated (completely brominated) compounds? Any partially brominated PAH is going to give you huge peaks. Have you tried running in negative ion mode?

Hi Angelica! I have attached a journal article that might provide more insight regarding the reason some species are found in oceanic rocky habitats. In particular, this article provides an Indo-Pacific wide survey of a deepwater snapper, Pristipomoides filamentosus or the Crimson Jobfish. The adults of which are found in rocky habitats at depths of 100-360 m. The article takes into account the correlation between its life history characteristics and its capacity to demonstrate high levels of genetic connectivity across the Indo-Pacific by relating the ability of some P. filamentosus to travel great distances as adults and the long length of its early pelagic phase (60-180 days; which allow new recruits to reach considerable size before settlement) as indicators of the potential this species has to be dispersive, with other factors such as geographic distance, gene flow and diversity (among others) to determine this.

Hello Tarik...It does not work at all. I have undergone chemical treatment of MWCNTs with 3M Nitric acid. As a mater of fact, Nitric acid itself is not sufficient and you will be required to use sulforic acid as well. The procedure is as follows: Firstly you have to put your sample in a furnace with the temperature reaching to 450 C with the step of 5c/min. Unwanted graphit and other unwanted amorphous carbons will be burnt following of this work. then you have put your SWCNTs in a round bottle flask incorporating a mixture of nitric acid/sulforic acid witha ratio 1/3. this will etch the side wall of the SWCNTs toward possessing COOH groups and OH. Acid mixtures treatments must be under reflux and in a boiling mixture of acids. One more thing is that the total concentration of the mixture should not exceed 6 to 8 molar for each of the moieties. Finally, you will be required to wash the mixture using a funnel containing perforated glass plate and I advice you to use PTFE membrane exactly fitting the diameter of the funnel. Use a vacuum pump attached to the funnel in a set up that takes washing water without harming the vacuum pump. You must wash the mixture till the pH reaches neutrality.

I agree with these advices. I also would like to share some of my experience with you. I have noticed that Organic Chemistry is appreciated as a hard subject everywhere and students that come to class with their mind made up that they shall find it hard generally tend to fail. So I try to make them “fall in love” with the subject by bringing to class examples of simple and understandable applications as a way to motivate them. Also it is necessary to build a good foundation of the basic concepts such as those already suggested to you (acidity, basicity, nucleophilicity, polarity and some physical properties that may be relevant). I also prepare my classes starting with simple examples and increase the degree of complexity in a gradual fashion. As a result, the students change from easy to complicate without noticing it very much. This have given me good results and students tell me at the end of the course that the “love” Organic Chemistry. Enjoy your teaching

And you're right, plants offers a variety of cellular-structured materials, too. Besides leaves, plant stems and wood are also typical cellular materials. You can search for SEM images of cedar, oak, or balsa wood, which are somewhat "layered," but they look different from different directions, more or less a 3D structure. Other cellular materials are feathers, bird beaks and porcupine quills, but I don't think they are anywhere near "layered" though. In addition, I would suggest those who are interested in further information about cellular solids look up for books and papers by Lorna J. Gibson. Many of them are classic in this field.

I suspect that in both formation and evolution many US institutions willfully ignored important portions of the ancestor German research university model. With regard to Professor Shaikh's thoughtful response, I regret that academic pettifoggery transcends boundaries and economic evolution of nation states. I applaud his vision of an academia in which persistent ethical competence find reward, but even glimpses of meritocracy are notably rare in America's business and academic organizations. (And I would offer that certainly no apology is needed for the "Bug's Life" allusion, as concrete examples are essential to concept understanding!)
