I have and use a Raspberry Pi and three Arduino systems, +30 yrs experience developing embedded systems. The best solution for teaching embedded systems development will depend on your students. If they are familiar with Linux and perhaps Python, then the Raspberry Pi could be used for some digital I/O apps (The RPi has audio output but no analog input). If your students are not experienced Linux users, go with the Arduino boards. There isn't a much easier way to get into embedded systems. Many "learning kits" are available that help give students a hands on approach to blinking LEDs, measuring analog signals, running servo motors, and more. The Arduino libraries make it very easy to start with a working demo and modify the code for your particular application. The optional Ethernet Shield makes it very easy to make a SD card data logger, or a web enabled sensor port. XRD bandwidth is directly related to the parcticl size and is most suitable for the evaluation. However, for quantitative calculation, the intrinsic instrument bandwidth has to take into account and must be decucted from the measured data. The way to correct it is by taking root of square difference of the measured width and the instrument width, which is obtained by mesuring polycrystal of the material. Azaroff's book: Elements of x-ray crystallography describes this method very clearly. By the same token, I think it could be applied to PL as well.

Hermann, you are correct in your assumption, in that, for a number of companies, the ISO 14001 "parchment" is just that, a piece of paper that says "we are certified." Please download one of my historical articles, "Keep your eye on the system, not the piece of paper. While that may be the main marching order for some companies to achieve certification to 14001, also realize that the area in question is as narrow or as wide as the system developer wants to make it to address their environmental footprint, that can also encompass health and safety issues (not just the domain of OHSAS 18001) as an area to consider taking into account the overall risk to the organization, as well as social and governance issues. Take for example the tainted peanut or contaminated lettuce, or even the sanitary conditions at those chicken farms (all in the US) where we had health concerns, or more recently, the deplorable mismanagement at the NE Compounding Center that caused many people to die because of lax quality controls at that facility - they all have one common denominator: a breakdown in the management system that caused irretrievable damage and harm. While the compounding center is a stretch, had the other food facilities in place an ISO management system that addressed more factors related to food safety, and general hygiene, as a function of risk management that could be tied back to an ISO 14001 system, such issues may have been identified early on. On a larger scale, the unfortunate garment workers in Bangladesh is another glaring example of manufacturers and service provides that need to take a closer look at the negative impacts their aspects are creating and mitigate them as risk management mitigators. On the topic of sustainability and CSR, the newly enacted ISO 26000, while not certifiable, is the latest in a string of new ISO published documents that are attempting to corral more and more organizations to realize that all our actions are interrelated and having in place management systems that address more than just the obvious environmental considerations is now part of the new order - a paradigm shift if you will.

Hi, How many experimental conditions do you have? are running the qPCRs for several genes at the same time for same samples or the whole biological and technical replicates in the same running for each individual gene (it should be a better option than the former)? Why haven´t you apply three technical replicates per sample (because with two you may have always one high and other low!). If you have enough material you should repeat the qPCRs analysis maybe with a better previous design (I don´t know how it was maybe it was correct). If you have no choice you could take into account the average of the whole biological and technical replicates as reference value for each group and try to eliminate the outliers (the least possible). Other suggestion: how many cycles are you using? perhaps you could avoid to reach the plateau of the curve (maybe 20 or 25 cycles), stop the running and to run the samples in an agarose gel because it could be helpful to see the differences within the standard curves samples and your experimental samples. Hi Kathryn, -You need to standardize the scores first, as different instruments have been used for the same construct. The most common standardization method is the Z-score = (X-mean)/std deviation. That will allow you to get scores as if "one single instrument" was used to measure the construct. -If your data are balanced (all participants assessed at the same time interval), you can use an ANOVA repeated measures. -Your other options are mixed models and Latent Growth Mixture Models, but they require some advanced statistical skills.
