How can I simulate hybrid genotypes from potential parental genetic data? Should I use HybridLab?
Hi everyone. I've been looking for a software in which I can simulate hybrid crosses between potential parental genotypes. I've found that HybridLab software (Molecular Ecology Notes (2006) 6, 971–973 doi: 10.1111/j.1471-8286.2006.01433.x) could be useful. However the link provided by the authors seems to be broken. Does anyone know where should i go to download this software? Is there any other software I could use?
Any help will be appreciated :)
I recently had the same problem with the broken link - if you email the author (Einar Nielsen email@example.com), he'll be able to send you the program.Following
Please tell the polarity of (petrol/Et2O/Et3N, 74:25:1) in terms of EtOAc/Hexane or MeOH/DCM?
This is for isolation of a organic compound in Silica gel column chromatography.
Silica gel chromatography doesn't work that way. Like solubility, polarity is not a single variable that is comparable across all compounds.
No possible combination of EtOAc/Hexane or MeOH/DCM will have the same properties as Petrol/Et2O/NEt3.
More generally, Petrol and Hexane have fairly equivalent properties. EtOAc is about twice as polar as Et2O but has similar properties. Chlorinated, aromatic, basic and acidic solvents all introduce their own distinct characteristics and interactions with substrates.Following
Is there a formal way to distinct a New Effect in Science ?
The Faraday Induction or Einstein claim that time is not absolute, constituted new effects (or even chapters) in Science. The Mendel laws of genetics is the discovery of comparable rank.
But there are many lesser effects in Science, published in journals. Not every reader can realize that text describes the New Effect in Science. So, what are the formal way for this kind of recognition.
Please, share your personal opinion with your peers.
Generally I agree with C.Lewis. But, sometime the author(s) don't realize that his/her results describe the new effect in science, so, he/she does not claim it. In the case they do realize, modesty deter them from such a claim.Following

Can Liturgy be an Evangelizing instrument
I am researching this topic and need input from diverse denominations and Christian groupings.
Of course. The movement of contemporary worship was infused with evangelism -- Willow Creek Church, for instance. See this quote from Christianity Today, Nov. 13, 2000 (http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2000/november13/5.62.html) about the contemporary liturgical style:
"The idea behind all this was to create a new kind of nondenominational church that would use an interesting program and comfortable surroundings to draw in the unchurched. Once drawn in, they would be enveloped in a comprehensive network of activities designed to give them a supportive community and deeper instruction in the Christian faith. This approach was so successful in Chicago that it immediately spawned a host of imitators …"
Recently the United Methodist Church began new church starts with a contemporary flavor, even to the point of not showing the UMC logo or having "Methodist" in the name of the church. An example is The Gathering, a church featured in this story I wrote for an online news organization:

Thiamhuat Tan added an answer in Engineering, Applied and Computational Mathematics:Can anyone help me on formulating the objective function in Genetic Algorithm?I am doing optimization using Genetic algorithm on the effect of parameters on the temperature gain in a particular building, that is on the difference between temp without cooling and temp with cooling (temp without cooling - temp with cooling). I am failing to formulate the objective function representing this difference. Please I need help on the objective function having three parameters, i.e.convective heat transfer coefficient, length of storage system, and mass flow rate.
you need to know what are the different variables which contribute to your objective functions, for example,
objective function f1(x) = A1*x(1) + A2*cos(x2)+ blah + blah
You would also need to consider the constraint functions.
After which you need both objective functions and constraints functions and limits of the variables into the GA.
By the way, which platform of GA are you using? NSGA-II? or just simple GA?
which software platform are you using? C/C++, etc?Following
How can I see water in a phosphatidylcholine sample under polarizing optical microscope in cross Nicole conditions?

Are there actually any "smart cities"?
"Smart" or "connected cities" are very much of the moment, with large amount of research funds (collaborative and pure), being directed in this area but the activity is often in terms of smaller scale and specific demonstrator projects evidencing aspects of a larger envisaged solution. When do we think we will see true smart cities and what will they look like?
Hi, interesting question indeed.
As you pointed out, there is first the issue of the definition of "smart city", because it became a trendy work any technological solution or extremely-reduced urban planning solution (for example, a very local neighborhood) is often called "smart". Every mayor is calling its own city smart or connected because it looks good in politics.
There is however one true example of smart city I know of, a "large-scale" city called MASDAR, you may know about it. There are also the exampled of Hamburg's HafenCity and Tianjin's city in China but I am not fully convinced yet. For me the Masdar project is the most accomplished because, here, being smart is about many aspects within the city. Energy consumption, housing, enterprises, everything is planned. Because it uses only green energy some call this Eco-city, which is for me the "level above" smart cities. However, again, such cities are called Eco-city just because they have a bit of green but a monstrous energy cost anyway. Green NeoCity such as Masdar requires intensive planning efforts and the next step will be probably to create more Eco-cities, and the networks to connect them together.Following
Is innovation a problem-solving or opportunity-seeking exercise?
Analysis to paralysis OR time for living dangerously...I am aware that time and circumstances affect perspectives to varying degrees. What has been the verdict in your field of expertise? Some contrasting perspectives in the linked resources may serve to spark this discussion.
There are many kinds of innovations. Marketing innovation is mainly opportunity-seeking (to find new opportunity for an existing product or to find opportunity to develop a new product to meet the market need). Process innovation is mainly problem-solving (to solve a production problem, quality issue, etc...). R&D innovation and organizational innovation can be both problem-solving or opportunity-seeking.Following

Which alternatives to ROA are most commonly used to measure the economic value?
The literature on business models usually mentions ROA (return on assets) as the most accepted way of measuring economic value. However, ROA is not a so refined metric compared to contemporary metrics. Despite that, the literature insists on ROA.
Companies create value by generating returns on capital. Therefore, ROCE (Return on Capital Employed) is also a widely accepted indicator to compare the relative profitability of companies, especially listed companies.Following

How can we develop framework in context of facility management for manufacturing industries? (not in office, enterprise, education or service sector)?
Any research papers in this regard will also be appreciated..
DEAR WALEED SAFDAR,
I AM FROM MANUFACTURING BACKGROUND TOO AND I CAN GIVE YOU MY INPUTS ON THE VARIOUS VARIBALES INVOLVED IN THE FACILITIES OF A MANUFACTURING ENTITY AND FROM THERE, YOU CAN DEVELOPE A FRAMEWORK BASED ON THE VARIABLE, WHICH YOU WANT TO DO RESEARCH.
IN GENERAL, THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES FACILITIES HAVE THE FOLLOWING VARIABLES:-
1. BUILDINGS - MAIN ONES - USED FOR MANUFACTURING (CORE PROCESSES OF THE FIRM)
2. BUILDINGS - SUPPLEMENTARY - CANTEEN, OFFICE, REST ROOMS, SECURITY, RECREATION, CONFERENCE HALLS AND OTHERS (SUPPORTING PROCESSES)
3. MACHINERIES AND EQUIPMENT - USED FOR MANUFACTURING DIRECTLY.
4. MACHINERIES AND EQUIPMENT - USED FOR SUPPORTING PROCESSES.
5. MATERIAL STORAGE WARE HOUSES - RAW MATERIAL / SEMI FINISHED AND FINISHED GOODS.
6. UTILITIES - LIKE GENERATORS / COMPRESSORS / COOLING TOWERS / CHILLERS / ELECTRICITY LINES / WATER LINES, SEWERAGE LINES, WATER TANKS, ETC.
7. ENVIRONMENT - GARDENS, LANDSCAPING, EXTERNAL HOARDINGS, MAN WALKING AREAS, MACHINERY MOVEMENT AREAS, FENCING, GATES, WASTE DISPOSAL ETC.

How can I draw some beautiful social network mapping efficiently?
Hello, everyone, now I embark on an new research about the relationship on Twitter. However, I was confused how can I map a large amount of links on one map quickly. I tried package igraph on R and it runs a whole night and end up with a picture. However, it is very ugly... Can you give me some advice to deal with it with igraph? or can you recommand some powerful software for me? Thank you very much!

Do you think the Universal Mind exists?
I watched the History channel yesterday, and saw the Universal Mind discussed. I can't help wondering what researchers and people in academia think about it. What do you think about the Universal Mind?
I believe it is a matter of opinion. Based on my theory of unified consciousness which is based on networking and oscillations in our intra-personal space , all thoughts and sensory information is processed within us.
In my opinion the idea of universal mind is very beneficial to us as humanity , but its existence can only be proven after we can prove how a human mind truly works.Following
How does one quench the excess MCPBA in an epoxidation reaction?
I am working up a reaction which calls for the use of excess 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid in methylene chloride. Any suggestions on how to quench the excess peroxy acid?
Brennan has it right, the easiest method is the addition of aqueous Na2SO3. Avoid Na2S2O3 as under acidic conditions it can precipitate elemental sulfur. Acetone also works but can be somewhat reactive depending on the functional groups of your molecule.Following
