There is a lot of concern regarding use of HFOV especially after the publication of the twin trials, OSCAR and OSCILLATE. Though these were adult trials, it has definitely dented the confidence on HFOV as a mode of ventilation for children with ARDS.
What is your personal practice? How do you look at the effectiveness of HFOV in light of your clinical experience? When do you consider its use in children with ARDS?
We, at least myself, do not use HFOV as primary ventilator mode for ARDS. Permissive hypercapnia is the only strategy I will use. It all depends on my patient's response and I will attempt to switch to HFOV and determine which ventilator benefit the specific patient.Following

is there any work pointing the benefits of producing seeds of different size be the same plant individual? I find a work of Poulsen et al (2014) J Ecol (attached) about the benefits of producing dimorphic seeds (hard and soft). I wonder if we know something about other traits?
I do know that there is the trade-off between number of seeds produced and their size. But why seeds produced by one individual can vary so much? For example, in red oaks it can range from 1-5 g acorns produced by one tree.

- CD4 T cell adoptive transfer and choosing CD4 mAbs?
I am trying many in vivo experiments and most of them includes CD4 T cell adoptive transfer between mice. But not many results show significant difference and now I am worried if the T cells I transferred might be defective.
My concern is that anti-CD4 fluorescent monoclonal antibodies I am using for sorting CD4+ T cells might block CD4 signaling and inactivate T cells. In my lab, we have GK1.5 and RM4-5. Application notes on BioLegend website say they both can block CD4 T cell activation, or even deplete CD4 T cells.
I hope anyone with experience in CD4 T cell transfer can answer if my concern is just or irrelevant.

I have a econometric model to see how currency (USD) affect the ADRs returns in countries of Latin America.
For two countries I have run the regression with two and three variables:
The model with 2 variables: dependent variable: ADRs returns and independent variables: changes in currency rate and US market return
The model with 3 variables: independent variable are:changes in currency rate and US market return and home market return.
The thing is for model with 3 variables I have a higher R adjusted but on variable become insignificant and for the model with 2 variable has a lower R adjusted but the two variables are significant. then which model i need to choose?
Why not try transforming all your variables into another unit root-free format e.g. 1st. differences or log-differences?
Have your tested for serially correlated errors and unit roots or co-integration?
However, regardless of the statistical significance of your right-hand variables, you should always lean toward keeping those variables suggested by economic theory.

This is a very good question. I believe the "discussion" is the proper way to discuss this question. It cannot be a discourse yet because to me it seems not really established where a discussion is only a discussion or a discourse can only be a discourse.
Habermas is associated with the term discourse and I believe discourse comes where implicit claims about the meaning of contents of communication are made, where opinions play a role. Whereas the discussion in my opinion (you don't see me contradicting here, do you?) may come from discussion partners who do not have a strong opinion on their opinion. I would say the discourse may go deeper in the topic than the discussion. Also I believe a discourse can be made by one person, whereas a discussion would suggest at least 2 partners.
In the end discussion and discourse can be taken as tomatoes vs. tomatoes, a semantic difference only.
Hopefully in addition to the discussion going to be made here about your question, you and some other experienced deep thinker may be able to produce a discourse over the topic.

Intensity of a spectrum is proportional to the length which light travels through the sample. If the sample "thickness" is too small, you will get bad spectrum with small and noisy peaks. But if the sample is too big, absorption will be too large and no light will pass through the sample, so you will get saturated peaks. It all depends on the strength of absorption peaks of particular liquid.
I think you should find out which direction light travels in your instrument, and then try different sample "thicknesses" along this direction (there should be different containers for liquid) for your range of concentrations to understand which is best for your sample.Following

I imported a DEM from ArcGIS to Matlab (R15a) and I used it as initial matrix in a model I wrote. Now I have the final matrix representing the final surface after N model steps and I would like to import it back in ArcGIS. I tried to export it as a GeoTIFF from Map Viewer, after having built the X and Y geolocation matrices that Matlab requires. What I got is a spatially referenced 3 RGB channel image with 8 bit depth, that I imported in ArcGIS. My problem is that I need to have the DEM of the final surface in order to make comparison with the original one, and the GeoTIFF does not allow me to do that because values of pixels are not altitude values but number from 1 to 255. Does anyone know if there is a more convenient way to export a grid from Matlab to ArcGIS? Or maybe if it is possible to obtain, in ArcGIS, the DEM from the GeoTIFF?
I agree with Essayas. Try creating your output matrix as an ASCII grid and then importing it into ArcGIS. If you are unfamiliar with it, think of the ASCII file (*.asc) as a text file which has each pixel value in a tab separated format and importantly, has header information specifying parameters of the raster, such as numbers of rows and columns, x and y coordinates of the origin (of the layer), cell size, no data value, etc.

A crude procedure (do this only if the output is small, i.e. file size upto a a few 10s of MBs) to make this file would be to save your output matrix data as a .txt file. Open it in a standard text editor like notepad or gedit and append the header info required (as outlined in the link above). Save as a .asc file and import in ArcGIS.
For larger files, I would not recommend opening it in a text editor. But use Matlab or a similar environment to access the text file and append the header info at the start of the file, then save as a .asc file. I do not use Matlab so cannot elaborate on the procedure. But in python, a simple .append function does the trick.
Once imported into ArcGIS you will need to define the imported layer's projection.Following

I'm trying to isolate human HSC from cord blood. I use Ficoll to get mononuclear cells and then perform lineage depletion,CD34+ seletion at last. Yet I found that early stage erythroblast as nucleated cells couldn't removed by Ficoll density centrifugation. Also they couldn't be remove by lineage depletion. For the worst, they express some extent level of CD34. So I get huge contamination of early stage erythroblast in CD34+ HSC. I know that Rosette form STEMCELL Technologies could remove those cells before CD34+ selection, besides that,any idea on how to remove these cells, like unique markers?

We used Ficoll to get mononuclear cells as you mentioned. It is very common some red blood cells trapedin the Ficoll layer.
So ParmLyse was used to lyse red blood cells.
Volume of ParmLyse used and Time period of incubation?
Sometime we treated the pellet twice. Then we used CD34 magnetic selection to purify HSC (Miltenyi system). We did not find ery-lysis step affect function (proliferation or differentiation) of the HSC.

I am trying to model a simple one-bay steel frame using nonlinear analysis in Abaqus. I do not know how I should exert the lateral load and boundary conditions in order to avoid any axial force in the beam.
It should be mentioned that:
1) I turned on the Nonlinear Geometry (NlGeom), so there is a large amount of axial force in beam that cannot be ignored.
2) I exerted the displacement load on both columns.

I think Mark's comment about assessment by stealth is an interesting one. I think learning by doing and then being required to explain, what you have learned by doing is a great way of assessment. It is a 'test' of ingenuity and understanding as opposed to memory and recall, or even just hit and hope. I am a strong advocate for experiential learning and from that drawing 'assessment' for the students or allowing them to respond to their learning through writing about it... not to answer my specific questions but to unpack what they have learned.
