    Does anyone have any research on how best to educate staff regarding palliative care?

    I am currently the Palliative Care Clinical Coordinator at our hospital.  We do not have a Palliative Care physician.  Results of recent survey questions have revealed that the majority of staff believe Palliative Care services are of importance but many factors leave them unsure of requesting Palliative Care Nurse consults.  I have been to the ELNEC Train-the-Trainer Course and I am planning to attend an ELNEC CORE Trainer program in the summer but I don't know what education approach would be best when working with our staff. Some have suggested concentrating on a different Palliative Care aspective each month and attend monthly staff meeting on each unit.  Others have suggested online webinar--of which I am not in favor.  I believe there are better outcomes in this particular type education when there are teacher/learner interaction.  If anyone has any ideas, I would definitely appreciatinput.  Thanks so much!

    I agree with the answer by Drew Dwyer.  When I worked in Palliative Care we were required to complete online courses.  The courses were provided by a company that the hospital had partnered with -- in order to use the software/program provided.  We acquired CEUs at the completion of courses.  These courses were required and offered a opportunity to become certified in Palliative Care or Hospice.  I hope this is of some help.

    A good question and I liked Dr. Kumar's response as well.  You probably need to read quite a bit from Robert Putnam on some of the benefits of social capital..it seems like the obvious starting point.  James DeFillipis wrote a good piece in Housing Policy Debate called the "Myth of Social Capital in Community Development", in which he lays out a great argument about how social capital seems to be fairly unconnected to economic gains (he says lots of other things too).  For example, Putnam hailed the high social capital in North and South Dakota in the early 2000s (before the oil boom in those two states), and its connection to low crime rates.  That's great, but there's also the issue that the Dakotas had two of the worst economies in the US at that time.  This can be related to the neighborhood level as well.

    We are facing purification problem with a His-tag cloned gene. The lysis buffer is 50mM tris pH- 7 , 100 mM NaCl and 1mM PMSF. The Protein (27 kda dimer) is bound to Ni-NTA Matrix and then washed with increasing conc. of imidazole upto 100 mM  and then eluted at 200 mM imidazole. Even after proper washing with 50 mM-100mM Imidazole, the final eluted protein shows a number of bands other than our expressed protein. i m using pre packed HiTrapIMAC column linked with FPLC. Expression system is Rosetta Blue as my protein contain amber stop codon. Post NI-NTA i have done GFC also, But in that case my protein is coming in void volume with all impurities. Also, yield of my protein is very less. for clarification i m attaching gel picture, the marked region is my protein of interest.

    Any suggestions.

    Hi Sheenam, have you tried a linear gradient to check when the protein of interest eluates best? Then you can add a flat gradient nearby that point and swap to a step gradient.

    In histology or pathology texts, I frequently come across statements asserting that "a high nucleus-to-cytoplasm (N:C) ratio in 'x' cells is indicative of cell malignancy". What I do not typically find however is the threshold at which a N:C ratio for a given cell line may be considered "high". 

    I understand that these ratios vary between different cell lines, and so there is no one size fits all answer for this question; however, how is it that decided that for lymphocytes a 'high' N:C ratio is above 4, and for cervical cells it's greater than 0.3? Is there a handbook or gold standard reference for these sorts of metrics?

    Hi Ahmed,

    I am not sure I totally understand your statement. There are two locations where you can set time step in Abaqus. The first one is in your attached pictures in STEP module. If you have unreasonable setting, let's say, too large time increment, the job will be terminated due to the convergence issue.

    The second place is in the output definition, which is also in STEP module, this setting controls how long you would like to wait to see the next frame of your results in odb file. This setting will not effect the calculation results. If you select a large increment, you probably miss some key frames. However, if you set the increment too small, you will end up with a very huge odb file including hundreds of frames.

    For your case, I would suggest you decrease your time increment in output definition. By doing that you will have more frames which can allow you figure out what happens at the end of 1 mins.

    Since barite is water soluable you could you use a pycnometer to measure the SG as cheap and easy method.

    After I search through some reference, I notice the reference oil use in calibration standard is different to each other:

    Method 418.1 Hexadecane, isooctane and chlorobenzene

    EPA 5520C isooctane, hexadecane and benzene

    Hach 10056 Stearic acid and hexadecane

    Do I know any different? i know hexadecane is aliphatic and isooctane is branded and benzene is aromatic, but I don't understand why HACH using only aliphatic alkane for calibration?  Is it any specific reason?

    Hi Yen...,  In general, the method development emphasizes on working range such as  
    precision, accuracy and uncertainty , limit detection, and  repeatable procedure are the  main concerned for the all routine analysis including  OG in several water matrixes, like drinking water, natural water (groundwater, surface water and bathing water) and residual water, with limits of quantification of 0.01 mg L-1. So those variables are looked as a whole.

    Here is what I would like to do. I have a very extensive time-series data set. 70,560 observations. The data is minutely and represents # of new visitors to a website each minute. In addition, I have 52 exogenous variables dummy variables (TV stations) that account for about 7,000 TV commercials. The dummy variables are equal to 1 only during the minute in which the commercial is occurring, thus, the vast majority of the time the dummy variable for each station is set to 0. I've used VARS before to try to capture the average amount of web traffic a commercial creates, however, I am wondering if anyone can point me into a better direction. One that possibly includes programming and automating STATA to be able to calculate irfs and cirfs and tie them back to each instance of a spot airing so that I can export the irfs by commercial.

    I am also working with ASC and I have tried the last period to take oligomerized ASCs after DSS treatment in tissue samples. I figured out a protocol on my own and at first I just took the inflamed region of the tissue and after protein isolation with special buffer and crosslinking, I resulted in the oligomerized forms. When I did it in the whole tissue, things did not go such easier. An extra issue I have is that the pellets are dissolved in SDS sample bf and I cannot do my Bradford measurement.

    Jordan, what about you? Did you find anything helpful? Does anyone have an idea?

    I assume if you protonated DNA by reducing the pH to 4, the electrostatic effect will be reduced.

    I think you should take GENERAL to SPECIFIC approach. First you need to list all variable with their lags, then you need to remain the significant ones.

    I have considered the Rayleigh damping by applying lowest natural frequency value for mass proportional (alpha) and keep the stiffness proportional damping (beta) equal to zero, but the reduction of displacement result is significant, it is around 10% which may not be accepted. Could you suggest me how we can assume the reasonable damping ratio for analysis? Thank you in advance.

    I guess, the terms in the continuity equation is derived from Eulerian description .. phyiscally means that equation describe the net mass flux  of fluid under consideration as a fluid flow into and leaving an infinitesimal stationary control volume in a Cartesian coordinate system.

    Density is a property of fluid(thermodynamic system) under consideration can be constant or can have relationship with other property of fluid that vary with space such as pressure or temperature.  One of example is air where density, pressure and temperature behave as an ideal/perfect gas  and the thermodynamic state is given by the corresponding equation of state.  As far as I know,, no one has invented a sensor for measuring density which is the advantage of CFD because we dont have to do that.  The only way to determine its value is pressure and temperature which varies with time and space.

    I have spectral reflectance data coming from a plant. As the figure shows, there is noise present in the data around the 1500 and at the end. We do not know a priori where this noise will occur because it may depend on how humans manipulate the corresponding device.

    Is there any standard algorithm (hopefully with R code) for removing this noise automatically?

    It really looks like absorption bands from water: one 'small' band around 1500nm and another strong one starting around 2000nm.  (look at the bottom website for example).

    i have prepared Manganese oxides insitu grown during the synthesis of silica nano spheres. MnOxides concentration shown by XPS is 0.13% while by ICP-AES is 1.1%. so such XPS data is reliable and acceptable?
