Please explain briefly why you find a theory important. Please denote the field and give a reference if you can. I am especially interested in theories/models from the following fields: sociology, economics, (social) psychology. Example: Gary Becker's theory of taste discrimination (Becker, 1957/71, "The Economics of Discrimination") is a very important theory of discrimination in labor economics and beyond. Since its formulation in 1957 it has been applied---mainly by economists but also by Sociologists---to numerous settings from labor economics over sports to education. To explain discrimination in wages, Becker introduces a taste for discrimination as an input factor of the utility function of rational actors in markets. Thereby Becker extends the utility function of market actors beyond money which was quite revolutionary at that time in (labor) economics.

Goffman emphasizes the social and structural factors that go toward the formation of stigmatized (i.e., spoiled) identities, rather than the more individualistic explanations of prejudice formation and discrimination preferred by some earlier psychologists in this field, like Gordon Allport. With Goffman's theory, power, (as I think is being alluded to by Francesca Ruisi in the post above), has a major role to play; less powerful social groups are often discriminated against by more powerful groups because stigma and discrimination can be socially adaptive in terms of for example reinforcing certain preferred attitudes, values and practices (behaviors) while simultaneously marginalizing others. Since the advent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and more recently the hepatitis C epidemic, there has been a renewed interest in stigma and discrimination in the area of health care. Health care workers unfortunately stigmatize and discriminate against some groups like people who inject drugs and gay men, often because they fear contagion - they are in the front line of infectious disease - but sometimes because of value judgements they make regarding guilty and innocent victims of disease. The work of Herek, Glunt, and Hamner around homophobia and fear of HIV/AIDS is certainly worth reading, as is the work of UK sociologist Graham Scambler. Scambler makes a distinction between felt and enacted stigma, where felt stigma refers to people's fears and perceptions of being stigmatized and discriminated against while enacted stigma is experiencing actual discrimination. These theorists have built on Goffman's work. Finally, I recommend an article published in 2003 in the journal Social Science and Medicine by Parker and Aggleton about HIV-related stigma. This beautiful article is a seminal review of stigma and discrimination in the context of HIV/AIDS. Enjoy!

Evolutionary consciousness would also enable us to explore how to find different outlets for behaviours that were once adaptive but may not be considered to be moral or "peaceful" in the modern-day context.
