  In a current problem we are trying to investigate the impact of global properties of developer social networks( made based on comments in the bug report; vertices are developers and edges exist ifIn a current problem we are trying to investigate the impact of global properties of developer social networks( made based on comments in the bug report; vertices are developers and edges exist if two developers comment on same bug report ) on bug fixing process. We want to see the evolution of such network over the period of six months and how the global properties like clustering coefficient or modularity etc. is related to bug fixing process attribute like number of bugs fixed in those six months. In this way we have many sets of pairs of independent and dependent variables. But the number of pairs in each set is just 16 i.e. we have 16 rows having two columns one column represents the independent variable like clustering coefficient of network formed in 6 month snap shot and other column has dependent variable like number of bugs fixed in the same snap shot.

The reason I stated to remove, or I suppose replace, subject D was due to the total cohesion loss was greatest by including subject D. When I assigned values of -1 in place of 0, and them multiplied each link between all the subjects I achieved a connection of each to the other of either a positive or negative value. By examining the triads developed in a visual representation I was able to see the the subject D created the least amount of net positive connections. By removing subject D It left only two net negative connections from a single subject, A, who maintained two net positive connections. This allowed for a more cohesive consensus, which in terms of a group or collaborative project, would allow all members of the group to achieve expertise in skill A without a sum of dissonance. I will grant you that I am fairly new to social theory, as I am more used to working with hierarchical social structures than with collaborative ones, but from my experience in the environment of corporate team structures I have found that the removal of disruptive elements can provide net results greater than the inclusion of additional subjects. I offer, by no means, a solution, but rather a directional approach that I would use in analysis of the data provided. I am interested to see what else comes of this, and will be watching this topic closely. Cheers!

For instance, if we take facebook and twiiter network's snapshots with the time interval of 3 months or 6 months (over the period of several years) and then would we see how the vertex, edges, or even global properties like clustering coefficient, modularity etc. are varying over the time? Then how could we conclude that they are evolving with the same rate, style, way, type or if there is a significant difference between the evolution process of these networks?

You clearly recognise that such an enquiry involves multipleDear Dr Gupta. Your question is about what to measure and more specifically about to measure it. Indeed, can it be measured? You clearly recognise that such an enquiry involves multiple inspections of networks: you mention 3-monthly snapshots. Over that time period new users will join the application, be it Facebook or Twitter. Additionally, some will cancel their accounts. So what seems like a simple, single measure is now two: new accounts and cancellations. Is the rate of new accounts greater, equal or less than rate of cancellations? These seem to me to be important figures. Secondly, some personal networks will change: some will expand, others stay the same, and others may contract. So again we need to look at three counts here. Again these different rates appear to be important and need consideration in your method. Perhaps the most interesting aspect will be to inspect how personal networks have added ties that connect an ego to other networks through perhaps a weak tie. Regardless of the strength (and how do you measure the strength of ties on Face book: by number of transactions, the emotional strength of the transaction .. I don’t know) of the tie, an examination of how a sampled number of account holder’s networks have changed (grown?) over time may be something that you can measure. All of the above is about ego networks and there are some simple measures we can use with such networks (see Scott (2000) for the theory and Cross and Parker (2004) for some excellent examples). After thinking about your question for 20 minutes or so, it does seem that sampling the millions of Facebook users and Twitters account holders may be a way in.     I found that PAJEK, ORA and GEPHI are good tools to identify most of the social network factors.

  Social Network Analysis Lecture. Need feedback and examples?

  I am preparing a lecture on social network analysis. The lecture will be 100 minutes long. I am not experienced with SNA so i thought i could ask here for some feedback. Obviously the lecture can'tI am preparing a lecture on social network analysis. The lecture will be 100 minutes long. I am not experienced with SNA so i thought i could ask here for some feedback. Obviously the lecture can't cover everything so i need to cut down to the most essential parts of SNA. Previous lectures already covered basics for graph theory but not in relation to SNs. So far i'm thinking talking about: Density, Centrality, Betwenness, Centralization and Betweenness Centralization, Cliques Basically i am following Social Network Analysis: A Handbook by John P Scott and part of Steve Borgatti's info on SNA. I am thinking also to use real life examples so that students can get a general idea about the application of these concepts. So far i found only one good example to use: http://her.oxfordjournals.org/content/23/1/62.full Do you know of any other examples? Do you think the content covered is enough for an introduction? Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
