Hi Christine - A question of interest related to the recent meteor that exploded over the Urals in Russia is if we have the assets in place (optical, radar etc) on earth or in orbit that could have detected - possibly allowing a prediction of the meteor's trajectory to the earth?. If they are not presently sufficient, could you open a discussion on what assets would be needed? I noticed the estimated diameter of this meteor was about 50 ft, Thanks ,Richard

Depending on how the mass is removed, the trajectory can change substantially or not at all. It all depends on whether the removal process applies any kind of force to the asteroid. So if a mass driver sitting on the asteroid surface is used to throw mined material off the asteroid in one direction, then conservation of momentum (mass x velocity) requires a net force on the asteroid in the opposite direction (3rd law of motion). if the mass driver is on the surface and pointing perpendicular to the radius vector to the center of mass of the asteroid,, it will actually provide a torque = mass x velocity x radius that will change the angular momentum of the asteroid causing it to spin either fast or slower (or in a slightly different direction). On the other hand if the material is mined and then brought to a rocket ship that takes off from the surface, there is no net force on the asteroid, except for some gas pressure from the rocket exhaust while it is still close to the asteroid.

In this paper authors have identified and quantified semi-major axis drifts in near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) by performing orbital fits to optical and radar astrometry. They focus on a subset of 54 NEAs that exhibit some of the most reliable and strongest drift rates. A selection criteria include a Yarkovsky sensitivity metric that quantifies the detectability of semi-major axis drift in any given data set, a signal-to-noise metric, and orbital coverage requirements.

Detection of Semimajor Axis Drifts in 54 Near-Earth Asteroids: New Measurements of the Yarkovsky Effect - Abstract - The Astronomical Journal - IOPscience

We have identified and quantified semimajor axis drifts in near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) by performing orbital fits to optical and radar astrometry of all numbered NEAs. We focus on a subset of 54 NEAs that exhibit some of the most reliable and strongest drift rates. Our selection criteria include a Yarkovsky sensitivity metric that quantifies the detectability of semimajor axis drift in any given data set, a signal-to-noise metric, and orbital coverage requirements. In 42 cases, the observed drifts (~10–3 AU Myr–1) agree well with numerical estimates of Yarkovsky drifts. This agreement suggests that the Yarkovsky effect is the dominant non-gravitational process affecting these orbits, and allows us to derive constraints on asteroid physical properties. In 12 cases, the drifts exceed nominal Yarkovsky predictions, which could be due to inaccuracies in our knowledge of physical properties, faulty astrometry, or modeling errors. If these high rates cannot be ruled out by further observations or improvements in modeling, they would be indicative of the presence of an additional non-gravitational force, such as that resulting from a loss of mass of order a kilogram per second. We define the Yarkovsky efficiency fY as the ratio of the change in orbital energy to incident solar radiation energy, and we find that typical Yarkovsky efficiencies are ~10–5.

Vulcanoids may be or may not be there but are not worrying for us as these are in the region having more gravitational force on these and can move to the sun in case of loosing the orbiting velocities. For research purpose and for information, yes these may give us some more clue about our solar system. If any body have some definit information I will be benifited.

Prevailing opinion is that water was delivered to the Earth at the end of its accretion, but this is still matter of debate. Moreover, still it is not quite clear who did bring the water to our planet, comets or asteroids? As icy objects originating in the outer part of the solar system, comets were most promising candidates. However, measured values of D/H (deuterium/hydrogen) ratio in the comets is about a factor 2 larger than that in the Earth's water. Because of that, some people suggested that water was delivered by asteroids, i.e. objects that originate in the main asteroid belt. The problem with this hypothesis was widespread belief that there is no water on asteroids. This opinion start to change in the last several years as presence of the water ice on several main belt objects was confirmed. In addition, a new class of objects, the so-called main-belt comets (MBCs), was relatively recently discovered. These are objects with asteroid-like orbit, but with a comet-like activity. MBCs are located in the main asteroid belt and they are believed to contain the water. For more detail about these objects see: http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/~hsieh/mbcs.shtml On the other hand, recent measurements of D/H ratio in the Hartley 2 comet suggests that it may be more consistent with that on the Earth, than previously thought. Thus, mystery is still to be solved, and an in-situ measurement of D/H ratio seems to be the only way to find a definite proof.
