And if there was an import of camels to the north, it is interesting that there was no continuation in the middle ages, or at least I don´t know of that. If somebody is interested in the article, it is published in the current Journal of Archaeological Science, Volume 39, Issue 5. And here is the abstract: "This paper describes the camel bones discovered in two Late Roman contexts from Arlon (Belgium). The morphological and metrical analyses identify the animal as a dromedary. The goal of this paper is also to provide an inventory of all camel finds published for the northern provinces of the Roman Empire. Based on a review of twenty-two archaeological sites with camel bones, it is shown that both the dromedary and Bactrian camel were imported to the northern Roman provinces and that the camels were present throughout the whole Roman period. This study also demonstrates that the camel discoveries cannot be linked exclusively with military contexts, as traditionally postulated. Indeed, several finds derive from civilian settlements (villas and cities). All sites with camel remains are located close to roads and are widespread throughout the Roman road network. It is suggested that the camels imported to the northern provinces might have been originally pack animals linked with both military and civilian traffic. "

    The silk road was originally a Roman trade route and with the colonization of north Africa, it would be amazing if the Romans did not import camels. In the areas that had less developed roads,The silk road was originally a Roman trade route and with the colonization of north Africa, it would be amazing if the Romans did not import camels. In the areas that had less developed roads, camels would have been very useful as they didnt have the limitations of horses. I would be surprised if the camels in use were not only dromedary but also bacterian, as the limits of the Roman empire bordered on central Asia. As for how the Romans profited, well both from the trade the camels catalysed and also from the trading in camels themselves.
