Proactive Approach to Ergonomics Reduces Pain in Office Workers Released: 10/21/2009 1:20 PM EDT Embargo expired: 10/23/2009 12:00 AM EDT Source: Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Newswise — A proactive ergonomic intervention reduces pain related to poor work postures in office employees, reports a study in the October Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). But just buying ergonomic desks and chairs isn't enough—setup and adjustment by a professional ergonomist is an essential part of the proactive ergonomic approach, according to the study led by Jasminka Goldoni Laestadius, M.D., Ph.D., of The World Bank's Joint Bank/Fund Health Services Department. Prompted by a move to a new World Bank headquarters, the researchers designed a study to determine whether a proactive approach to ergonomics could reduce pain and other symptoms in office workers. One group of workers received new ergonomic office furniture, along with information on how to set it up. Another group also received new furniture and information, plus personalized setup by a professional ergonomist. The proactive approach reduced symptoms of musculoskeletal pain and eyestrain, but only for workers receiving an expert work station setup. This group also had a significant increase in productivity. Neither group had a significant reduction in sick leave. The reduction in symptoms was clearly related to improved work postures—"Better postures meant less pain," the researchers write. "This verifies our experience that equipment such as an adjustable chair does not add value unless properly adjusted." Reductions in pain and other symptoms were seen only in workers who had such symptoms at the start of the study—fully half of all workers. For employees who were initially symptom free, the ergonomic program did not reduce the rate of new symptoms. To be effective in reducing pain and improving productivity, a proactive ergonomics program needs to include an individual work station assessment, the study suggests. "Just providing new office furniture and written instructions is not sufficient to achieve proper accommodation," Dr. Laestadius and co-authors conclude. "Good office equipment is a poor substitute for good working positions." My research focus is centering on the ability of workers to identify the hazards within their environments particlualy those working in hazardous industries such as mining. Much of their working environment is hazardous and risks become 'wallpaper'. I also have done some work on the importance of supervisors role in promoting and determining the safety culture of organisations. We found that 3-rotation shift workers(2 day- 1 off- 2 evening- 1 off - 2 night- 2 off) had lower level of cholesterol than day workers. On the other hand we see the nonsignificant higher level of cholesterol in 2-rotation shift workers compared with day workers. our results are adjusted for baseline cholesterol, BMI, Education, Martial status, Triglycerides, HbA1c, Glocuse, Cratinin, Years of shif work and type of work(official vs non-official).

Actually coal have an impact for us / workers from materials. that are *NORM* ( Naturally Occuring Radioactive Material) and *TENORM* (Technological Enhance Naturally Occuring Radioactive Material). *NORM* Coal have a potensial impact radioactive from nature material. but TENORM, Coal have a potensial impact radioactive from nature material and more dangerous if we do something adding process like a burning material (coal) for Technological fuel nuclear power plants.

    Dear Ulises: Thanks for your attension. unfortunately in our study we haven't sufficient information about some confunders such as smoking, diet, stress, phisycal activity etc. but we beliveDear Ulises: Thanks for your attension. unfortunately in our study we haven't sufficient information about some confunders such as smoking, diet, stress, phisycal activity etc. but we belive 3-rotation shift workers have higher phisical activity than day workers. you know our most day workers are official. Morever we think 3-rotation workers have more free time and lower stress because of non sufficient supervising in night work. In the litrature review, we found that most of samples of the studies were policemen or health proffesionals.so there isn't comparable study(ies) for us to criticising our results. In addition shift work definitions are different in studies.
