The NNN taxonomy's aim is to define and organize nursing: The classification of nursing diagnoses contains 13 domains with 220 nursing diagnoses. Each nursing diagnosis (or patient care need definition) is composed of a definition, related or etiological - factors, and defining characteristics. The Nursing interventions classification (NIC) contains 585 intervention concepts with subordinated nursing actions. The Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) describes 385 nursing-sensitive patient outcomes. All three classifications are linked and scientifically tested, each concept is literature-based. Off the top of my head, i would say the above has an order of what comes first, second, etc. The order in my mind is the following: primary research (inquiry that contributes to nursing knowledge to establish a hierarchy of evidence), translation research (methods that have a research base that helps to understand factors involved in successful translation of evidence), research utilization (integration of repetitive findings to day to day practice), clinical guidelines (known methods that are scientifically supported by repetitive findings), evidence based practice (development of policy and procedure relevant to research /repetitive findings) It seems that it would be difficult for a beginning student to get this right,,,,, unless there is a clarity and common usage of language by the rest of us..... a timely question indeed!

Nurses in India are trained in basic statistics during their career .Those who do Masters in nursing and Phd in nursing need to know advanced techniques of statistics as they have to do a research thesis.When I did my MD in Community Medicine the topic on which I worked had been extensively explored by the nursing fraternity.My topic of thesis was to assess the quality of care of diabetics in a tertiary care hospital . As far as application of statistics is concerned ,every nurse uses statistics as a basic tool in day-today functioning,they maintain the statistics like total no. of beds and the beds occupied for each day in various wards,the proportion of diabetics or hypertensives in each ward(as they need to coordinate and communicate with the dietitian for nutritional mngt).They also keep track of no. of adverse drug reactions ,adverse events,no.of accidental falls,no. of deaths etc.
