Can anyone help me about voice recognition system for my robot?

I am making a robot. Its mechanical part is complete but voice control system is incomplete. Can you suggest how can I control my robot using voice?

We are making a humanoid and I am about to add some extra details, firstly there was idea of fingers and I have to submit another detail innovatively. Do you have any suggestions?

Researchers at Saarland University together with associates in Bologna and Naples have developed a robotic hand that can accomplish both tasks with ease and yet including the actuators is scarcely larger than a human arm. This was made possible by a novel string actuator, making use of small electric motors to twist strings. The robotic hand is thus powerful yet delicate and could one day be deployed as a helper around the house or in catastrophic scenarios. "We wanted to impart our robotic hand with a broad spectrum of human traits. Its artificial muscles should be able to deliver enormous forces by simple and compact means," explains Chris May, scientist at Saarland University's Laboratory of Actuation Technology. The robotic hand was recently presented during a meeting at the Forschungszentrum Informatik in Karlsruhe. It is an example of some of the new steps taken in robotic research within the scope of the European project DEXMART. Over the past four years international scientists developed various concepts, especially focussed on increasing the versatility with which two-arm robots can be implemented. The European Union sponsored the research consortium to the sum of 6.3 million Euros. "When robots help around the house or should save people from a burning building, they need to have hands which can grasp with strength but at the same time gently," explains Hartmut Janocha, Professor of Process Automation at Saarland University. The challenge lies in trying to make the necessary technology fit within the robotic arm such that it does not differ significantly from a human arm in terms of size and form. „We came up with a simple, yet extremely effective idea: using strings that are twisted by small, high-speed motors, we are able to exert high tensile forces within a compact space," explains mechatronic researcher May. The sensorised and controlled robotic hand is able to touch diverse objects, to grasp and lift them and place them gently in a new position. Chris May demonstrated this in Karlsruhe with a delicate Easter egg and a heavy glass bottle. Extremely strong polymer strings enable the Saarbrücken researchers to lift a five kilogram load by 30 mm within a split second, making use of a small electric motor and a 20 cm long string. „Each robotic finger, which like a human finger is composed of three segments, can be controlled precisely by means of the individual tendons ," describes Chris May the novel miniature actuator. The mini electric motors run at high speed and a small torque on the order of five Newton-millimetres. „The capability of the robotic hand is so near to that of humans that the vision of robots as personal assistants in the household, in the operating room as well as in industrial settings is becoming ever more realistic. But in the fight to contain the nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, robots may prove to be a powerful ally in reigning in a dangerous situation. Thanks to Bedford-based iRobot, the Japanese government will now have four robots, capable of doing everything from measuring radiation levels to clearing debris, to assist them with the ongoing nuclear crisis and in clean-up efforts following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck on March 11. iRobot — a Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory spinoff company founded by MIT Professor Emeritus Rodney Brooks, Colin Angle and Helen Greiner — sent four robots to Japan to aid in the nation’s recovery efforts, both at the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant and in regions struck by the earthquake and tsunami. According to Vice Admiral Joseph Dyer, chief operating officer of iRobot, the company sent two PackBots and two Warrior robots to aid the Japanese without even receiving a call for assistance. The robots are already on the ground in Japan and Dyer hopes they will soon prove useful in a wide variety of tasks. While iRobot is not exactly sure what sorts of functions the PackBots and Warriors will be performing, Dyer explained that the biggest benefit in having these types of robots is their ability to enter locations deemed unsafe for humans. “Robots are very capable of going into places that people cannot or should not go,” Dyer said. “They can survey the environment, report back and provide visual inspection. They can hear and see and measure and record and do many of the things that a human investigator can do, only without the danger.” The 68-pound PackBots sent to Japan are specifically designed for hazardous situations and are programmed to measure radiation levels (including gamma radiation), oxygen temperatures, humidity and explosive gases. The Warrior, the second type of robot sent to Japan, is 350 pounds and is designed with heavy-lifting capabilities and the ability to traverse and clear all sorts of terrain. Several iRobot employees traveled to Japan as well, where they provided training in how to operate the machines, as well as technical support. Dyer said his company jumped at the opportunity to help provide support to the Japanese people during this critical time. “We build robots to put distance between people and danger, and this is a great example of how they can serve,” Dyer said.

In designing the new hand system, researchers at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, part of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), focused on robustness. They may have just built the toughest robot hand yet. The DLR hand has the shape and size of a human hand, with five articulated fingers powered by a web of 38 tendons, each connected to an individual motor on the forearm. The main capability that makes the DLR hand different from other robot hands is that it can control its stiffness. The motors can tension the tendons, allowing the hand to absorb violent shocks. In one test, the researchers hit the hand with a baseball bat—a 66 G impact. The hand survived. The video below shows the fingers moving and the hand getting hit by a hammer and a metal bar: The DLR team didn’t want to build an anatomically correct copy of a human hand, as other teams have. They wanted a hand that can perform like a human hand both in terms of dexterity and resilience. The hand has a total of 19 degrees of freedom, or only one less than the real thing, and it can move the fingers independently to grasp varied objects. The fingers can exert a force of up to 30 newtons at the fingertips, which makes this hand also one of the strongest ever built. Another key element in the DLR design is a spring mechanism connected to each tendon. These springs [photo left] give the tendons, which are made from a super strong synthetic fiber called Dyneema, more elasticity, allowing the fingers to absorb and release energy, like our own hands do. This capability is key for achieving robustness and for mimicking the kinematic, dynamic, and force properties of the human hand. During normal operation, the finger joints can turn at about 500 degrees per second. By tensioning the springs, and then releasing their energy to produce extra torque, the joint speed can reach 2000 degrees per second. This means that this robot hand can do something few others, if any, can: snap its fingers. Why build such a super strong hand? Markus Grebenstein, the hand's lead designer, says that existing robot hands built with rigid parts, despite their Terminator-tough looks, are relatively fragile. Even small collisions, with forces of a few tens of newtons, can dislodge joints and tear fingers apart. “If every time a robot bumps its hand, the hand gets damaged, we’ll have a big problem deploying service robots in the real world,” Grebenstein says. To change its stiffness, the DLR hand uses an approach known as antagonistic actuation. The joints of each finger [photo below] are driven by two tendons, each attached to one motor. When the motors turn in the same direction, the joint moves; when they turn in opposite directions, the joint stiffens. Other hands, such as the Shadow hand designed in the U.K., also use antagonistic actuation. But the Shadow uses pneumatic artificial muscles, which have limitations in how much they can vary their stiffness. Before developing the new hand, Grebenstein designed the hand of another advanced robot, the humanoid Justin. He says that in one experiment they would throw heavy balls and have Justin try to catch them. “The impact would strain the joints beyond their limits and kill the fingers,” he says. The new hand can catch a ball thrown from several meters away. The actuation and spring mechanisms are capable of absorbing the kinetic energy without structural damages. But the hand can’t always be in a stiff mode. To do manipulation tasks that require accuracy, it’s better to have a hand with low stiffness. By adjusting the tendon motors, the DLR hand can do just that. To operate the hand, the researchers use special sensor gloves or simply send grasping commands. The control system is based on monitoring the joint angles. It doesn’t need to do impedance control, Grebenstein says, because the hand has compliance within the mechanics. To detect whether an object is soft and must be handled more gently, the hand measures force by keeping track of the elongation of the spring mechanisms. “In terms of grasping and dexterity, we’re quite close to the human hand,” he says, adding that the new hand is “miles ahead” of Justin’s hands. About 13 people have worked on the hand, and Grebenstein insists it’s hard to estimate the cost of the project. But he says that the hardware for one hand would cost between 70,000 and 100,000 euros. The researchers are now building a complete two-arm torso called the DLR Hand Arm System. Their plan is to study innovative grasping and manipulation strategies, including bimanual manipulations. Grebenstein hopes that their new approach to hand design will help advance the field of service robots.
