Hello everyone! A part of my thesis is to examine different fault events in MVDC architectures for shipboard power systems. A recent thought was to include a fault caused by a lighting strike in order to observe the behavior of my grid and circuit breaker. I found the circuit of the lighting impulse that has been introduced in the literature but i cannot find out how to simulate the shpere gap! I am anticipating for your help!

One more important difference: electrical trees are true fissures, i.e. continuous fine tubes with branching, while water tree are series of small water bubbels arranged into lines. The latter are rather cauesd by osmotic pehnomena.

Thanks for Your comments, James! Those are among the reasons for which I decided to use an air gap in this my most recent contraption. Plus that it has to be a high side switch and work over a wide voltage range. I have an old stash of goodies that I have carefully guarded, but it seems that a simple pneumatic air gap gives very good rise times. My problem is that I would like to reduce jitter, eg.make the spark behave more uniformly. I believe this may be easier at higher currents, peak current is just 50A to 100A in my case. A secondary adjustable airgap seem like a very good idea. Just being able to use better shapes for the electrodes may make the difference.

Corona current is usually calculated from Ic=sigma*Electric field = ion mobility*space charge*Electric field. In Maxwell, E is available, mobility is constant, the problem in finding the value of space charge density. My application is: electrostatic precipitator (wire-cylindrical or wire-duct).

Hi, I think your basis of question and problem is about switching moment. You should consider this concept that the CBs operation is not sharp. I think your problem is for misunderstanding of CB operation concept. I will explain for you. Hope be used Faults have a random manner and we don’t know when they happen. This means when a fault happens, the current in the CB can be have any value and therefore, this is random too. The current is very important for CBs why? Because the breaker should be open in the zero current value. In according to moment of faults and amount of current, the CBs can be open in the first current zero or NOT and operate in the second current zero. It means that the operations of CBs are not sharp and instantaneous. In synchronous CBs unlike traditional CBs, in the basis of fault moment and CB operation time delay the proper triggering time will be calculated.

It can be made by Cocroft - Walton type voltage multiplier circuit but the problem is that for higher stages,( here it is about 12 to 16)and power frequency the regulation becomes poor and ripple factor increases. You can improve both by using lesser stage and /or high frequency AC HV
