  Strengthening health systems in developing countries. How can NGOs contribute?

  Most health systems in the developing world are under- resourced, in terms of financial and human resources. they also lack appropriate policies and processes that can facilitate the effectiveMost health systems in the developing world are under- resourced, in terms of financial and human resources. they also lack appropriate policies and processes that can facilitate the effective provision of health care services to its people. NGOs have been providing support to government in providing health services especially in post war, disaster hit areas. There have been concerns as to how sustainable there efforts are after they leave. A common cited solution to such a concern, is to strengthen the existing health care system. The question is, how can that be done and what are the specific roles NGOs can play in doing that? Your comments are highly needed on this issue.

    Well, I think that NGOs can be part of any health system. Sometimes as a provider, sometimes as a stakeholder, sometimes in advocacy and policy maker's collaborators. But Just one thing must beWell, I think that NGOs can be part of any health system. Sometimes as a provider, sometimes as a stakeholder, sometimes in advocacy and policy maker's collaborators. But Just one thing must be clear, any heatlh systems is supported on NGOs only. If you see the concept of structured pluralism (one of the grounded conceptualization of health service systems) to "create a health system you must to obtain the participation of 5 actors. Government- Health delivery services organizations - Community / customers - Health funds managers organizations - NGOs / others. The strength of the health system depends of level of organization between all participants or actors. My experience in this field, both NGOs and Communities are the weak side of the system. About Community because do not have culture of participation (specially in under development countries) and their representants sometimes don't have the capacity or knowledge to represent common interests of community or sometimes are thinking in their own benefits before that community benefits. About NGOs sometimes do not have clear their role because sometimes are trying to replace the goverment, sometimes are trying to replace the communities (as their representants), sometimes are playing to be a delivery services organization... If you want to strengthening the health services the first step is to clarify the actors and roles for each. About the NGOs this condition don't have the same meaning for all kind of organization and under this point of view thier treatment must be different according with te role in the system. Last.
