In North African fold belt, Eocene compressive tectonic phase is in discussion between authors. Some confirm this phase and some others denies it or proved that it was extensive regime. Global Geodynamics could be a good solution to contribute to this debate or give and argument for the understanding of this "discussed phase".

Is there any way to calculate the hight of a seiche wave induced by an earthquake of a known magnitude in a lake of wich you kown the dimensions and depth? We have historical evidence of past eartquake but I wanted a more scientific way to resolve this problem.

A method such as ours, presented in this BSSA, uses expert opinion to chose the data sets (catalog of past earthquakes from historical or archeological records, dated cumulative offsets, trench data), but then lets the Bayesian framework determine the best parameters for given candidate renewal models, and also lets the framework come up with the optimal combination of models in the Bayesian sense. In principle, the model could end up with 0.5, .3, .2 for BPT, Weibull, and lognormal for a given fault, and 0.8, 0.15, 0.05 for another fault of possibly the same mechanism in the same type of tectonic environment. Would that be okay? Or is there something about the data that you would not quite trust that much?

I think if you added a breif description of what is happening in the sequence, it would be far more useful. I would assume that increasing lateral stress leads to a series of Earth Quakes, that propogates from bottom to top of the diagonal fault, but without a description of what you see happening in this sequence, it is open to personnal interpretation, and does not grab attention.

Actually, these are two terms for a single concept; regardless the history behind this difference, today, rake is usually used by seismologists indicating the geometry of seismic slip vectors. it could change from 0 to 180 for strike-slip/reverse faults, and from 0 to -180 for strike-slip/normal faults. Pitch is used by structural geologists (especially in microtectonic and stress state analyses) and varies from 0 to 90 indicating the sense of faulting. Rake completes the right-hand role conv. Pitch associates Azimuth/Dip conv. As one should use Trend/plunge for Dip-direction/dip conv. rake is more confortable for computer programs, while pitch is easilly measured in the field.
