  How universal are differences of emotion recognition/perception?

  I just read a paper this morning with the title of "facial expression of emotion are not culturally universal", which argues that 1) whereas westerners represent each of the six basic emotions with aI just read a paper this morning with the title of "facial expression of emotion are not culturally universal", which argues that 1) whereas westerners represent each of the six basic emotions with a distinct set of facial movements common to the group, easterners do not, and 2) easterners represent emotional intensity with dinstinctive dynamic eye activity. While I find it interesting in terms of its methodology and the findings, I am also concerned about its validity due to the small sample. According to my own research using faces in MSCEIT emotion perception part, people across China and US have consensus on what emotion a face displays, the differences only lie in their consensus level, which means in China people have a significantly lower level of consensus than US people. I think it is too rash to jump to the conclusion that emotion recognition/perception is cultural different with such a small sample. And I believe there is a meta-culture on emotion recognition/perception while some cultural differences also exist. Maybe we need to do some more research on this phenomenon. Is there anyone who are interested in doing research on this topic?

My example is something I found it extremely strange in real life, which I thought most people shook their heads to symbolically say 'No'/'Don't want' - that don't not expect the unexpected in research. Anyhow, u r right about varieties of smile, that depends on how Shao defined operationally in his research, right? And about the small sample he mentioned...maybe that should get its power of effect size checked (GPower). If it is among the small studies for pilot study purpose, so, no wonder we'll have a lot of questions as well as the researchers of that study. This discussion again, reminds me of my university days that my lecturer said most of the things u r unable to choose all-or-none approach to decide. Some things exist in dualism or middle path of golden means as the famous proposal, right?

So I am going to describe a little my works. The subject of my study concerned the adolescents coming from emigrants parents : a part of them coming from the second generation, a part of them coming from the third generation. I have worked on the links between the delinquency and the self-esteem, the anxiety and the "double appartenance". My method has been really not usual for a study in clinical psychology because it has been a lot "empiric" : I have built a method which was comporting three scales (questionnary) : the Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI), the Revised-Child Manifest Anxiety Scale (R-CMAS) and the QUENIB (the bicultural integration scale evaluation questionnary), and also a few clinicals discussions. I have compared adolescents coming from emigrants parents and adolescents coming from parents who were not emigrants. I have compared adolescents who were delinquants and adolescents who were not delinquents. The results are very interesting in fact. Should you be interested by them ? And if it is the case, how should we be able to give to each other our ideas and works ? I wait for your answer. Pass a good day, a good week. Bye.

I can rest only on theoretical laurels and hope the example of Benedict writing of Japan so effectively without having been there is one that can be emulated. I would ask your opinion of some few additional remarks based on theory and current affairs reading. I have noted that most, though hardly all, honor-based societies tend toward hyper-nationalism, the most extreme where personality cults are achieved among the ruling party, and this despite the observation that the public may generally hold a dim view of the governance as a whole. I mentioned in a recent piece prepared for publication (openDemocracy) that Russia had intervened in Serbia as if to complain at its being ignored in its considered 'back yard' and that China often acts as if to put on display its 'strutting credentials'. Some consider such remarks as snarky, but I view them as wholly accurate and fair. As Benedict wisely remarked, culture is 'personality writ large'. She was entirely correct in my view, and we risk the perfidy of deliberate ignorance in refusing truths because inconvenient or seemingly unkind when in fact the reality is that personality is often unkind for many ulterior or even obvious reasons, and should be understood as such, lest mis-comprehension lead to misplaced policies. I also believe that a thorough understanding of honor-dignity theory can offer a medium for explicating cross-cultural realities with greater clarity without loss of accuracy. For example, again with China's experience in mind, the cult of dignity, in which an elitist group presumes itself of greater dignity and deservedness of the best offerings of society manages by power and/or subterfuge to corral as much as possible for itself all the while spouting grand populist cliches and promises. The cult knows no preference to cultural type or moiety. Euripides wrote forty plays to announce that the once honor cult of Athenian aristocracy was now a dignity cult. Parts of the Christian right and cowboy capitalist Republican in the States manifest the same. Many institutional habits reflect the same, including a marked tendency to presume themselves sanctified as against outsiders, and so on. I have read reports that China's governing party permits what can only be termed 'cowboy capitalism on steroids' as an effort to maintain power at all cost by relying on the newly rich to offer the support without which the regime would presumably be far less stable. Now I am led to wonder if part of the collective presuppositions of Chinese capitalism may be owing as much to a collective desire that capitalistic prowess serve nationalistic objectives such that the individualist endeavors are less checked by the usual collective prerequisites. And while the collectivist spirit is everywhere in evidence (the equivalent of Owenite work communities on factory locations) nonetheless are to all intents and purposes far more oriented toward the success of the firm than the good of the collective, appearances to the contrary notwithstanding. Of course none of this should be taken to mean that I demean China's collectivist spirit generally, for certainly I do not, and wish America had far more of it in areas such as health care and economic opportunity. The while the main body of water is going down to hit the ground with a splash, some water on the ground already tries to go up like a sprinkle. I think the main body of water represents the forces of global changes, while the water trying to go up as a reaction to the splash looks like the counter-global forces-including the local traditions,perhaps the value systems. In the long run the main body of water will continue (to bring changes) and the counter water will try to go up (as localities, reactive forces). Please share your views.
