Noam Chomsky is considered to be the father of modern linguistics. Chomsky is well known for his theory of generative grammar. The first book that has been written on Linguistics is " Astadhyayi" authored by an Indian sage who lived in 700 BC, that means 2700 years ago. Astadhyayi was written in Sanskrit language- the language of vedas. Chomsky acknowledged that he borrowed the ideas of Panini in developing Generative Grammar. So it is very clear that Panini pioneered Generative Grammar. Chomsky became very famous for his other theories like 'innateness hypothesis' in which he stated that humans are born with innate language capabilities in other words, language is hard-wired into their brains.

Daniel Everett disputes Chomsky's theory of recursion and language universals based on his research on Piranha language.
