I hope I can help with some information regarding begomoviruses in tomatoes. First of all, it is known that there is no resistance gene for tomatoes that confers immunity to infection to any of the begomos. Lawrence and Peter comments are important and should be taken into consideration. So, if there is no resistant material, it is always difficult to do a screening test. If you inoculate in a too high pressure, all the plants will become infected and possibly with severe symptoms. Therefore, it is essential to set experiments with some controls. I believe resistant hybrids will be available in your country as commercial materials. Contact the seed company distributors, Try them, and always include a susceptible material. Try also to test two different whitefly populations, maybe 5 and 20 insects per plant. In Brazil, it is difficult to do a screening for begomos by whiteflies, as crinis may be present. This comment can be applicable to other hosts. As a first step, I would advise you to go to the field and talk with growers and extension service. They know a lot. Good luck, Alice

Hi, Candra, We have reared Thrips palmi for eight years. We can control even ages for insecticide bioassay and thrips-transmitted Watermelon silver mottle virus. We used White Dutch runner bean to rear them. The runner bean leaves were put on wet cottons and can maintain at least 5-7 days. You maybe be able to try it. I attached our rearing processes. It is unfortunate. If you should encounter unfamiliar species again in future, you could send specimens to the Dept. with the parcel directed to Millicent. True Alexander, true! It is all to do with the way that all things in science in general and biology in particular are connected. Pull at one thread and the whole tangle follows. I think however that the colleagues may well have agreed by now that on the one hand, some purposes in biology require little more information than photographs can supply (not to mention that photographs often can tell many things that no pinned or preserved specimen can can tell) whereas other applications demand biological material. You cannot tell DNA from pictures for example. Again, some organisms, such as Papilio demodocus or Colias electo (assuming no names have changed recently!) here in South Africa don't seem threatened by collection, and many threatened species seem to have worse problems than any collectors could cause, but it is possible that some species small in population, with tightly limited range and specialised ecological demands, could well be pushed into oblivion by keen collectors. Again, even a rare species will not be affected by a specimen being collected after it had finished with its reproduction. It always is a matter of perspective. No?

using UV protectants and biocides is a very old idea. About 30 years ago, it was found and patented that use of Stilbene Ub absorbers t(hat will absorb UV, then emit as vlue-white light) increased the efficacy of a virus product economically. That patent must me outdated now and free to use. To find out what UV filter to use, you must first know the UV wavelength or domaine that damage your virus. You can get UV fiters for UV A, UV B and UV C and some are quite broad, but the broader, the less specific, thus the more you need and then it becomes non economic. So, as often, back to the lab bench and first get the back ground knowledge, then test UV absorbers with different aborbing bands

The little problem with your image is, that no single family- or species level character can be deciphered from it; of course some few taxa that do have such, for instance horns or hair pencils, can be safely removed, but there still remain something like 50-100 000 moth (not any butterfly, I am rather sure) species whose larvae fit the image. Certainly the host plant infomation significantly narrows down the likely possibilities, but usually the keys available only apply to pest species and neglect the vastly more numerous non-pest -status owning species. So, I would be careful with the id from larva, and try to rear it as adult. Then you will be on safer grounds.

I am working with Diaphorina citri in Colombia. I am trying to establish an easy method for rearing Tamarixia radiata (Waterston), the eulophid parasitoid. Going back to the question. The best method will be to keep the plantings in a screen-house, BUT you say it is too expensive. Well, I will suggest then to trim all the new growth from the plantings at the time of selling the plant.This only works with young plantings. As you may have noticed, the nymphs of D. citri are only found on new growth, and the adults if they are present at the time will surely fly away when you do the pruning of the new growth! My ideas are no as crazy as my friend two stairs above, but am sure will work. You will need to have some gardening scissors and perhaps a sturdy brush to get rid of the new growth. Also consider a disinfecting treatment after taking the new growth. I shall come with a better idea, but still at work now and the good ideas come at the bar with a few beers and a shot or tow of tequila, then passed that then goes back again to silly ideas or no ideas at all.

How about to try an heat treatment on warehouses. If you can use these machines, and the structures are suitable (good external isolation), I think that this kind of treatment can help you to control T. granarium without the use of dangerous and unhealthy substances. MBr was completely phased out in 2005, and it is allowed only in developing countries until 2015.

This species is a major pest in many different crops in India. We have tried to use A. swirskii but it is not effective, nor are the other commercially produced predatory mites. I would be glad to hear other suggestions and also to get some articles about the life cycle of this thrips (e.g. propensity to pupate in the soil or plant, etc.) and the known natural enemies.
