Article: BK Lyncis: The Oldest Old Nova?... And a Bellwether for Cataclysmic-Variable Evolution

ABSTRACT: We summarize the results of a 20-year campaign to study the light curves of BK Lyncis, a nova-like star strangely located below the 2-3 hour orbital period gap in the family of cataclysmic variables. Two apparent "superhumps" dominate the nightly light curves - with periods 4.6% longer, and 3.0% shorter, than P_orb. The first appears to be associated with the star's brighter states (V~14), while the second appears to be present throughout and becomes very dominant in the low state (V~15.7). Starting in the year 2005, the star's light curve became indistinguishable from that of a dwarf nova - in particular, that of the ER UMa subclass. Reviewing all the star's oddities, we speculate: (a) BK Lyn is the remnant of the probable nova on 30 December 101, and (b) it has been fading ever since, but has taken ~2000 years for the accretion rate to drop sufficiently to permit dwarf-nova eruptions. If such behavior is common, it can explain other puzzles of CV evolution. One: why the ER UMa class even exists (because all members can be remnants of recent novae). Two: why ER UMa stars and short-period novalikes are rare (because their lifetimes, which are essentially cooling times, are short). Three: why short-period novae all decline to luminosity states far above their true quiescence (because they're just getting started in their postnova cooling). Four: why the orbital periods, accretion rates, and white-dwarf temperatures of short-period CVs are somewhat too large to arise purely from the effects of gravitational radiation (because the unexpectedly long interval of enhanced postnova brightness boosts the mean mass-transfer rate). These are substantial rewards in return for one investment of hypothesis: that the second parameter in CV evolution, besides P_orb, is time since the last classical-nova eruption.12/2012; -
Article: Superoutbursts of the SU UMa-type dwarf nova CP Draconis

ABSTRACT: Analysis of observations of the SU UMa-type dwarf nova, CP Dra, between February 2001 and April 2009 has revealed 15 outbursts, at least eight of which were superoutbursts. The supercycle length is 230+/-56 d. We report photometry of the 2001 and 2009 superoutbursts which shows that they were remarkably similar to each other in terms of the profile of the outburst light curve and the evolution of the superhumps. The outburst amplitude was 5.5 magnitudes and the Psh during the plateau phase was measured at 0.08335(31) and 0.08343(21) d, respectively. In both cases, Psh decreased during the course of the outburst and there is some evidence that there was an abrupt change corresponding to the point in the plateau where a slow fade begins. The 2001 superoutburst was caught during the rise to maximum and during this period we found that the Psh was significantly longer than during the subsequent stages. Superhumps of 0.3 magnitude peak-to-peak amplitude were present at the height of each outburst and these gradually diminished during the outburst. We also report photometry from the 2002 superoutburst, although coverage was not so extensive, which revealed Psh = 0.08348(32) d consistent with the other two superoutbursts. Analysis of time resolved photometry from the 2009 outburst revealed evidence for an orbital period of 0.08084(86) d, giving a fractional superhump period excess epsilon = 0.032(3) d. Article: Photometry of Three Superoutbursts of the SU UMa-type Dwarf Nova, SW Ursae Majoris

ABSTRACT: We investigated the superhump evolution, analysing optical photometric observations of the 2000 February-March, the 2002 October-November, and the 2006 September superoutbursts of SW UMa. The superhumps evolved in the same way after their appearance during the 2000 and the 2002 superoutbursts, and probably during the 2006 one. This indicates that the superhump evolution may be governed by the invariable binary parameters. We detected a periodicity in light curve after the end of the 2000 superoutburst without phase shift, which seems to be the remains of the superhumps. We found QPOs at the end stage of the 2000 and the 2002 superoutbursts, but failed to find extraordinarily large-amplitude QPOs called `super-QPOs' which previously have been observed in SW UMa. Article: The 2003 Superoutburst of an SU UMa-type Dwarf Nova, GO Comae Berenices

ABSTRACT: We photometrically observed the 2003 June superoutburst of GO Gom. The mean superhump period was 0.063059(13) d. The resultant data revealed that (1) the obtained light curve contained a precursor, (2) a plateau stage of the object lasted 8 days, which is remarkably shorter than that of ordinary SU UMa-type dwarf novae, and (3) the amplitude of the superoutburst was less than 5 mag, which is unpredictably small when taking into account the fact that the supercycle of GO Com is about 2800 days. Article: Rapid Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables. XVI. DW Cancri

ABSTRACT: We report photometry and spectroscopy of the novalike variable DW Cancri. The spectra show the usual broad H and He emission lines, with an excitation and continuum slope characteristic of a moderately high accretion rate. A radial-velocity search yields strong detections at two periods, 86.1015(3) min and 38.58377(6) min. We interpret these as respectively the orbital period P_orb of the binary, and the spin period P_spin of a magnetic white dwarf. The light curve also shows the spin period, plus an additional strong signal at 69.9133(10) min, which coincides with the difference frequency 1/P_spin-1/P_orb. These periods are stable over the 1 year baseline of measurement. This triply-periodic structure mimics the behavior of several well-credentialed members of the "DQ Herculis" (intermediate polar) class of cataclysmic variables. DQ Her membership is also suggested by the mysteriously strong sideband signal (at nu_spin-nu_orb), attesting to a strong pulsed flux at X-ray/EUV/UV wavelengths. DW Cnc is a new member of this class, and would be an excellent target for extended observation at these wavelengths. Article: Superhumps in Cataclysmic Binaries. XXIII. V442 Ophiuchi and RX J1643.7+3402

ABSTRACT: We report the results of long observing campaigns on two novalike variables: V442 Ophiuchi and RX J1643.7+3402. These stars have high-excitation spectra, complex line profiles signifying mass loss at particular orbital phases, and similar orbital periods (respectively 0.12433 and 0.12056 d). They are well-credentialed members of the SW Sex class of cataclysmic variables. Their light curves are also quite complex. V442 Oph shows periodic signals with periods of 0.12090(8) and 4.37(15) days, and RX J1643.7+3402 shows similar signals at 0.11696(8) d and 4.05(12) d. We interpret these short and long periods respectively as a "negative superhump" and the wobble period of the accretion disk. The superhump could then possibly arise from the heating of the secondary (and structures fixed in the orbital frame) by inner-disk radiation, which reaches the secondary relatively unimpeded since the disk is not coplanar. At higher frequencies, both stars show another type of variability: quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with a period near 1000 seconds. Underlying these strong signals of low stability may be weak signals of higher stability. Similar QPOs, and negative superhumps, are quite common features in SW Sex stars. Both can in principle be explained by ascribing strong magnetism to the white dwarf member of the binary; and we suggest that SW Sex stars are borderline AM Herculis binaries, usually drowned by a high accretion rate. This would provide an ancestor channel for AM Hers, whose origin is still mysterious. Article: Superhumps in Cataclysmic Binaries. XXII. 1RXS J232953.9+062814

ABSTRACT: We report photometry of 1RXS J232953.9+062814, a recently discovered dwarf nova with a remarkably short 64.2-minute orbital period. In quiescence, the star's light curve is that of a double sinusoid, arising from the "ellipsoidal" distortion of the Roche-lobe-filling secondary. During superoutburst, common superhumps develop with a period 3-4% longer than P_orb. This indicates a mass ratio M_2/M_1=0.19+-0.02, a surprisingly large value in so compact a binary. This implies that the secondary star has a density 2-3 times higher than that of other short-period dwarf novae, suggesting a secondary enriched by H-burning prior to the common-envelope phase of evolution. We estimate i=50+-5 deg, M_1=0.63 (+0.12, -0.09) M_sol, M_2=0.12 (+0.03, -0.02) M_sol, R_2=0.121 (+0.010, -0.007) R_sol, and a distance to the binary of 180+-40 pc. Article: First detection of the growing humps at the rapidly rising stage of dwarf novae AL Com and WZ Sge

ABSTRACT: We report on time-series photometric observations in the earliest stages of superoutbursts of the extreme dwarf novae, AL Com and WZ Sge, which started on 2001 May after the 6 years quiescence and on 2001 July after the 23 years quiescence, respectively. We detected growth of ``early superhumps'' during the each rising stage. Our observations reject the mass transfer instability for the trigger of the superoutburst of WZ Sge stars, and show the existence of some relations between the ``early superhumps'' and the spiral structure, which give a hint of the origin of the ``early superhumps.''
