ABSTRACT: A sample of 3.95M ψ(2S) decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for ψ(2S)→pp̅ , ΛΛ̅ , Σ0Σ̅ 0, Ξ-Ξ̅ +, Δ++Δ̅ --, Σ+(1385)Σ̅ -(1385), Ξ0(1530)Ξ̅ 0(1530), and Ω-Ω̅ +. These results are compared to expectations based on the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, factorization, and perturbative QCD.

ABSTRACT: In a sample of 7.8 million J/ψ decays collected in the Beijing Spectrometer, the process J/ψ⃗γηc is observed for five different ηc decay channels: K+K-π+π-, π+π-π+π-, K±KS0π∓ (with KS0→π+π-), φφ (with φ⃗K+K-) and K+K-π0. From these signals, we determine the mass of ηc to be 2976.6±2.9±1.3 MeV. Combining this result with a previously reported result from a similar study using ψ(2S)→γηc detected in the same spectrometer gives mηc=2976.3±2.3±1.2 MeV. For the combined samples, we obtain Γηc=11.0±8.1±4.1 MeV.

ABSTRACT: Limits on anomalous WWγ and WWZ couplings are presented from a study of WW/WZ⃗eνjj events produced in pp̅ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV. Results from the analysis of data collected using the DØ detector during the 1993–1995 Tevatron collider run at Fermilab are combined with those of an earlier study from the 1992–1993 run. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the W boson yields direct limits on anomalous WWγ and WWZ couplings. With the assumption that the WWγ and WWZ couplings are equal, we obtain -0.34<λ<0.36 (with Δκ=0) and -0.43<Δκ<0.59 (with λ=0) at the 95% confidence level for a form-factor scale Λ=2.0 TeV.

ABSTRACT: We present measurements of the b boverline
production cross section and angular correlations using the DØ
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p poverline
Collider operating at /sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The /b quark production cross
section for yb<1.0 and pTb>6
GeV//c is extracted from single muon and dimuon data samples. The
results agree in shape with the next-to-leading order QCD calculation of
heavy flavor production but are greater than the central values of these
predictions. The angular correlations between /b and boverline quarks, measured from the azimuthal opening angle
between their decay muons, also agree in shape with the next-to-leading
order QCD prediction.

ABSTRACT: The first measurement of B(D0→φX0) and an upper limit for B(D+→φX+) are determined from 22.3 pb-1 of e+e- annihilation data at a c.m. energy of 4.03 GeV. The data were recorded by the Beijing Spectrometer (BES) at BEPC. A recoil charge method is applied to charm threshold data to determine the charge of the D meson in the recoil from 9054±309±416 reconstructed D0, D+ mesons. The branching fractions B(D0→φX0)=(1.71-0.71+0.76±0.17)%, and B(D+→φX+)<1.8% are determined from 10 events with a reconstructed D and a recoiling φ. In addition, a 90% C.L. upper limit of B(D+→φe+X0)<1.6% is determined from a search for semileptonic decays of the D+.

ABSTRACT: Using a sample of 3.8 M ψ(2S) events accumulated with the BES detector, the process ψ(2S)→π+π-J/ψ is studied. The angular distributions are compared with the general decay amplitude analysis of Cahn. We find that the dipion system requires some D wave amplitude, as well as S wave. On the other hand, the J/ψ-(π+π-) relative angular momentum is consistent with being pure S wave. The decay distributions have been fit to heavy quarkonium models, including the Novikov-Shifman model. This model, which is written in terms of the parameter κ, predicts that D wave pions should be present. We determine κ=0.183±0.002±0.003 based on the joint mππ-cosθπ* distribution. The fraction of D wave amplitude as a function of mππ is found to decrease with increasing mππ, in agreement with the model. We have also fit the Mannel-Yan model, which is another model that allows D wave pions.

ABSTRACT: Inclusive dijet production at large pseudorapidity intervals (Deltaeta) between the two jets has been suggested as a regime for observing Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) dynamics. We have measured the dijet cross section for large Deltaeta in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1800 and 630 GeV using the D0 detector. The partonic cross section increases strongly with the size of Deltaeta. The observed growth is even stronger than expected on the basis of BFKL resummation in the leading logarithmic approximation. The growth of the partonic cross section can be accommodated with an effective BFKL intercept of alphaBFKL(20 GeV)=1.65+/-0.07.

ABSTRACT: The D0 collaboration has performed a study of spin correlation in
tt¯ production for the process
tt¯-->bW+b¯W-, where the W bosons
decay to eν or μν. A sample of six events was collected during
an exposure of the D0 detector to an integrated luminosity of
approximately 125 pb-1 of s = 1.8 TeV pp¯ collisions.
The standard model (SM) predicts that the short lifetime of the top
quark ensures the transmission of any spin information at production to
the tt¯ decay products. The degree of spin correlation is
characterized by a correlation coefficient κ. We find that
κ>-0.25 at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the SM
prediction of κ = 0.88.

ABSTRACT: The cross section for charmed meson production at √s=4.03 and 4.14 GeV has been measured with the Beijing Spectrometer. The measurement was made using 22.3 pb-1 of e+e- data collected at 4.03 GeV and 1.5 pb-1 of e+e- data collected at 4.14 GeV. Inclusive observed cross sections for the production of charged and neutral D mesons and momentum spectra are presented. Observed cross sections were radiatively corrected to obtain tree level cross sections. Measurements of the total hadronic cross section are obtained from the charmed meson cross section and an extrapolation of results from below the charm threshold.

ABSTRACT: We report on a measurement of sigma(pp-->W+X)B(W-->taunu) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity (lum) of 18 pb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector during 1994-1995. We find that sigma(pp-->W+X)B(W-->taunu)=2.22+/-0.09 (stat)+/-0. 10 (syst)+/-0.10 (lum) nb. Lepton universality predicts that the ratio of the tau and electron electroweak charged current couplings to the W boson, gWtau/gWe, be unity. We find gWtau/gWe=0.980+/-0.031, in agreement with lepton universality.

ABSTRACT: We report a new measurement of the cross section for the production of
isolated photons with transverse energies (
EγT) above 10 GeV and pseudorapidities
\|η\|<2.5 in pp¯ collisions at s = 1.8 TeV. The results are
based on a data sample of 107.6 pb-1 recorded during
1992-1995 with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The
background, predominantly from jets which fragment to neutral mesons,
was estimated using the longitudinal shower shape of photon candidates
in the calorimeter. The measured cross section is in good agreement with
the next-to-leading order QCD calculation for
EγT>~36 GeV.

ABSTRACT: Hadronic decays of the P-wave spin-triplet charmonium states χcJ(J=0,1,2) are studied using a sample of ψ(2S) decays collected by the BES detector operating at the BEPC storage ring. Branching fractions for the decays χc1→KS0K+π-+c.c., χc0→KS0KS0, χc2→KS0KS0, χc0→φφ, χc2→φφ and χcJ→K+K-K+K- are measured for the first time, and those for χcJ→π+π-π+π-, χcJ→π+π-K+K-, χcJ→π+π-pp̅ and χcJ→3(π+π-) are measured with improved precision. In addition, we determine the masses of the χc0 and ηc to be Mχc0=3414.1±0.6(stat)±0.8(syst) MeV and Mηc=2975.8±3.9(stat)±1.2(syst) MeV.

ABSTRACT: BES data on
J/ψ-->γ(K+K-π0) display
a strong peak in the K+K-π0 mass
spectrum at 1450 MeV. This peak and a corresponding one in
J/ψ-->γ(ηπ+π-) at ~1400 MeV
may be fitted well by η(1440) with dominant decays to
K*(890)K, using an s-dependent width in the Breit-Wigner
amplitude. A broad background is also required in KK0 (where
K0 stands for the Kπ S-wave) and also in ηππ,
but is probably not resonant in this mass range.

ABSTRACT: A comparison of the rates for ψ(2S)→π+π-J/ψ, J/ψ⃗l+l- and J/ψ⃗ anything is used to determine the J/ψ leptonic branching fractions. The results are B(J/ψ⃗e+e-)=(5.90±0.05±0.10)% and B(J/ψ⃗μ+μ-)=(5.84±0.06±0.10)%, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Assuming lepton universality, the leptonic branching fraction of the J/ψ is B(J/ψ⃗l+l-)=(5.87±0.04±0.09)% per species. This result is used to estimate the QCD scale factor ΛMS¯(4) and the strong coupling constant αs.

ABSTRACT: We report first measurements of the branching fractions B(ψ2S→γη′)=(1.54±0.31±0.20)×10-4 and B(ψ2S→γη)=(0.53±0.31±0.08)×10-4. The ψ(2S)→γη′ result is consistent with expectations of a model that considers the possibility of η′-ηc(2S) mixing. The ratio of the ψ(2S)→γη′ and ψ(2S)→γη rates is used to determine the pseudoscalar octet-singlet mixing angle.

ABSTRACT: A search is performed for the production of the ψ(2S) in e+e- annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 4.03 GeV using the BES detector operated at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC). The kinematic features of the reconstructed ψ(2S) signal are consistent with its being produced only in association with an energetic photon resulting from initial state radiation (ISR). Limits are placed on ψ(2S) production from the decay of unknown charmonia or metastable hybrids that might be produced in e+e- annihilations at 4.03 GeV. Under the assumption that the observed cross section for ψ(2S) production is due entirely to ISR, the partial width Γee of the ψ(2S) is measured to be 2.07±0.32keV.

ABSTRACT: The absolute inclusive branching fraction of Ds+→φX+ has been measured from data collected by the BES detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.03 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 22.3 pb-1. At this energy, direct pair production e+e-→Ds+Ds- has been observed. We have selected Ds candidate events by reconstructing five hadronic decay modes Ds+→φπ+, K0*K+, K0K+, f0π+ and K0K-π+π+ and have searched for inclusive φ’s in the recoiling Ds-. We observed three recoiling φ’s in the 166.4 ± 31.8 Ds candidate events, which leads to the absolute branching fraction B(Ds+→φX+)=(17.8-7.2+15.1-6.3+0.6) % and B(Ds+→φπ+)=(3.6-1.6+3.1-1.3+0.4) %.
