    ABSTRACT: The purpose of this article is to analyze the concepts that guide the practices of health promotion by professionals at a family health unit in the city of João Pessoa, state of Paraíba, Brazil. A qualitative survey was carried out, with interview techniques and participatory observations, involving semi-structured interviews and field diaries. Data was collected between April and May, 2010. The key participants were six members of a health promotion management commission and another two professionals, recommended by the commission, thus totaling eight interviewees. The interviews and the field diaries were analyzed based on the discourse analysis method. The analysis categories were concepts of health promotion, knowledge of the National Health Promotion Policy and health promotion initiatives, from planning to execution. Documents from international conferences on health promotion and the National Health Promotion Policy were all used as theoretical references. The interviewees proved to have an extensive knowledge of health care, which directly influenced their concept of health promotion; however, there is incoherence between the discourse and the practice. This study is expected to contribute to a reflection on the health promotion activities undertaken by these professionals.

    ABSTRACT: University extension activities are increasing within the academic sphere. However, different conceptions and ideologies guide these practices. Physiotherapy undergraduate courses do not usually involve extension activities in a constant way, since the aspect of assistance prevails among them. This paper presents an extension physiotherapy project experience based on popular education, performed in a community in João Pessoa. The importance of this experience in physiotherapists training is highlighted, since it improved contacts with the social reality, the local first-level health services and the links to people and community organizations, based on dialogue and social responsibility.

    ABSTRACT: The extension project of Physiotherapy in the Community is developed in the neighborhood of Grotão linked to the family health units, in the city of João Pessoa. The aim of this work is to value popular knowledge and practices. The domiciliary physiotherapeutical assistance to the light of the popular education, at the same time that it promotes assistance to the unassisted population, extends our vision of health as an educational process. In each domiciliary visit we observed the social reality of the popular layers and the problems these people face, reflecting in its state of health, being evident for us the partner-economic conditionants of the process health-illness. This is observed that when carrying out domiciliary consultation on the basis of the principles of the popular education, it extents the perspective of the performance of the physiotherapist. This is so, because it is an education based on the dialogue, that proposes the exchange between scientific and popular knowledge, motivating the perspective of a commitment to the health together with the community.
