ABSTRACT: Summary“The proportion of the world's population over the age of 60 years doubled in the last century and will increase two to three fold in the first century of this millennium. Depending on the age group between 60% and 80% of elderly people are taking medication and between 20% and 30% of these patients are taking at least three drugs.Age-related physiological changes affect all organ systems in the body. These organ based changes significantly affect how the ageing body handles and responds to drugs. Chronic illness in older age and related organ dysfunction can compound the effect physiological ageing has on how the body handles drugs. In this chapter we describe age associated changes in physiology and their consequent changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and their implications for prescribing for elderly patients.”
