ABSTRACT: The performance of a muon radiography system designed to image the inner
structure of a nuclear plant located at a distance of 64 m was evaluated. We
concluded absence of the fuel in the pressure vessel during the measurement
period and succeeded in profiling the fuel material placed in the storage pool.
The obtained data also demonstrated the sensitivity of the system to water
level changes in the reactor well and the dryer-separator pool. It is expected
that the system could reconstruct a 2 m cubic fuel object easily. By operating
multiple systems, typically four identical systems, viewing the reactor from
different directions simultaneously, detection of a 1 m cubic object should
also be achievable within a few month period.

ABSTRACT: We report on a measurement of the top-quark electric charge in ttbar events
in which one W boson originating from the top-quark pair decays into leptons
and the other into hadrons. The event sample was collected by the CDF II
detector in sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions and corresponds to
5.6 fb^(-1). We find the data to be consistent with the standard model and
exclude the existence of an exotic quark with -4/3 electric charge and mass of
the conventional top quark at the 99% confidence level.

ABSTRACT: This Letter reports a measurement of the cross section for producing pairs of central prompt isolated photons in proton-antiproton collisions at a total energy sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using data corresponding to 9.5 fb^{-1} integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured differential cross section is compared to three calculations derived from the theory of strong interactions. These include a prediction based on a leading order matrix element calculation merged with a parton shower model, a next-to-leading order calculation, and a next-to-next-to-leading order calculation. The first and last calculations reproduce most aspects of the data, thus showing the importance of higher-order contributions for understanding the theory of strong interaction and improving measurements of the Higgs boson and searches for new phenomena in diphoton final states.

ABSTRACT: We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP violation parameters in B0
-> pi+ pi- decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample
containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with
the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain the
CP violation parameters Acp = +0.33 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) and Scp =
-0.64 +/- 0.08 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst), where Acp and Scp represent direct and
mixing-induced CP violation, respectively. From an isospin analysis including
results from other Belle measurements, we rule out 23.8 < phi2 < 66.8 degrees
at the 1 sigma level.

ABSTRACT: We present an updated search for the Higgs boson produced in association with
a vector boson in the final state with missing transverse energy and two jets.
We use the full CDF data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45
fb${}^{-1}$ at a proton-antiproton center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1.96$
TeV. New to this analysis is the inclusion of a $b$-jet identification
algorithm specifically optimized for $H\to b\bar{b}$ searches. Across the Higgs
boson mass range $90 \le m_H \le 150$ GeV$/c^2$, the expected 95% credibility
level upper limits on the $V H$ production cross section times the $H\to
b\bar{b}$ branching fraction are improved by an average of 14% relative to the
previous analysis. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV$/c^2$, the observed
(expected) limit is 3.06 (3.33) times the standard model prediction,
corresponding to one of the most sensitive searches to date in this final
state.

ABSTRACT: The ATLAS experiment has observed 1995 Z boson candidates in data corresponding to 0.15 nb^{-1} of integrated luminosity obtained in the 2011 LHC Pb+Pb run at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. The Z bosons are reconstructed via dielectron and dimuon decay channels, with a background contamination of less than 3%. Results from the two channels are consistent and are combined. Within the statistical and systematic uncertainties, the per-event Z boson yield is proportional to the number of binary collisions estimated by the Glauber model. The elliptic anisotropy of the azimuthal distribution of the Z boson with respect to the event plane is found to be consistent with zero.

ABSTRACT: Results of a search for new phenomena in events with an energetic photon and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=7 TeV are reported. Data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb^{-1} are used. Good agreement is observed between the data and the standard model predictions. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with large extra spatial dimensions and on pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates.

ABSTRACT: This Letter presents a search for magnetic monopoles with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider using an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb^{-1} of pp collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=7 TeV. No event is found in the signal region, leading to an upper limit on the production cross section at 95% confidence level of 1.6/ϵ fb for Dirac magnetic monopoles with the minimum unit magnetic charge and with mass between 200 GeV and 1500 GeV, where ϵ is the monopole reconstruction efficiency. The efficiency ϵ is high and uniform in the fiducial region given by pseudorapidity |η|<1.37 and transverse kinetic energy 600-700<E^{kin}sinθ<1400 GeV. The minimum value of 700 GeV is for monopoles of mass 200 GeV, whereas the minimum value of 600 GeV is applicable for higher mass monopoles. Therefore, the upper limit on the production cross section at 95% confidence level is 2 fb in this fiducial region. Assuming the kinematic distributions from Drell-Yan pair production of spin-1/2 Dirac magnetic monopoles, the efficiency is in the range 1%-10%, leading to an upper limit on the cross section at 95% confidence level that varies from 145 fb to 16 fb for monopoles with mass between 200 GeV and 1200 GeV. This limit is weaker than the fiducial limit because most of these monopoles lie outside the fiducial region.

ABSTRACT: We present a study of the branching fraction of the decay B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0
and the fraction of longitudinally polarized \rho^0 mesons in this decay. The
results are obtained from the final data sample containing $772 \times 10^{6}$
$B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle
detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We find $166 \pm 59$
B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0 events, corresponding to a branching fraction of ${\cal
B}(B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0) = (1.02\pm 0.30 (\rm stat) \pm 0.22 (\rm syst))\times
10^{-6} $ with a longitudinally polarization fraction $f_L =
0.21^{+0.18}_{-0.22} (\rm stat) \pm 0.11 (\rm syst)$. The branching fraction's
upper limit is ${\cal B}(B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0) < 1.5 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90%
confidence level. We use the longitudinal polarization fraction to determine
the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix angle $\phi_2 = (91.0 \pm 7.2)^{\circ}$
through an isospin analysis in the $B\to\rho\rho$ system. We furthermore obtain
${\cal B}(B^0 -> rho^0 f_0) \times {\cal B}(f_0 -> \pi^+\pi^-) = (0.86 \pm 0.27
(\rm stat) \pm 0.15 (\rm syst))\times 10^{-6}$, corresponding to $149 \pm 49$
$B^0 -> rho^0 f_0$ events with a significance of 3.0 standard deviations and
upper limits at 90% confidence level on the (product) branching fractions for
possible decays with the same final state, ${\cal B}(B^0 -> pi^+\pi^-pi^+\pi^-)
< 11.7 \times 10^{-6} $, ${\cal B}(B^0 -> rho^0 pi^+\pi^-) < 12.2 \times
10^{-6}$, ${\cal B}(B^0 -> f_0 pi^+\pi^-) \times {\cal B}(f_0->\pi^+\pi^-) <
3.1 \times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(B^0 -> f_0 f_0) \times {\cal
B}(f_0->\pi^+\pi^-)^{2} < 0.2 \times 10^{-6}$.

ABSTRACT: A search is presented for direct top squark pair production in final states with one isolated electron or muon, jets, and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=7 TeV. The measurement is based on 4.7 fb^{-1} of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Each top squark is assumed to decay to a top quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations. Top squark masses between 230 GeV and 440 GeV are excluded with 95% confidence for massless LSPs, and top squark masses around 400 GeV are excluded for LSP masses up to 125 GeV.

ABSTRACT: A search for direct pair production of supersymmetric top squarks (t[over ˜]_{1}) is presented, assuming the t[over ˜]_{1} decays into a top quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle, χ[over ˜]_{1}^{0}, and that both top quarks decay to purely hadronic final states. A total of 16 (4) events are observed compared to a predicted standard model background of 13.5_{-3.6}^{+3.7}(4.4_{-1.3}^{+1.7}) events in two signal regions based on ∫Ldt=4.7 fb^{-1} of pp collision data taken at sqrt[s]=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. An exclusion region in the t[over ˜]_{1} versus χ[over ˜]_{1}^{0} mass plane is evaluated: 370<m_{t[over ˜]_{1}}<465 GeV is excluded for m_{χ[over ˜]_{1}^{0}}∼0 GeV while m_{t[over ˜]_{1}}=445 GeV is excluded for m_{χ[over ˜]_{1}^{0}}≤50 GeV.

ABSTRACT: We present the first direct measurement of the top-quark mass using tt[over ¯] events decaying in the hadronic τ+jets decay channel. Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 fb^{-1} collected by the CDF II detector in pp[over ¯] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, we measure the tt[over ¯] cross section, σ_{tt[over ¯]}, and the top-quark mass, M_{top}. We extract M_{top} from a likelihood based on per-event probabilities calculated with leading-order signal and background matrix elements. We measure σ_{tt[over ¯]}=8.8±3.3(stat)±2.2(syst) pb and M_{top}=172.7±9.3(stat)±3.7(syst) GeV/c^{2}.

ABSTRACT: We present new measurements of the inclusive forward-backward ttbar
production asymmetry, AFB, and its dependence on several properties of the
ttbar system. The measurements are performed with the full Tevatron data set
recorded with the CDF II detector during ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96
TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb^(-1). We measure the
asymmetry using the rapidity difference Delta-y=y_(t)-y_(tbar). Parton-level
results are derived, yielding an inclusive asymmetry of 0.164+/-0.047 (stat +
syst). We observe a linear dependence of AFB on the top-quark pair mass
M(ttbar) and the rapidity difference |Delta-y| at detector and parton levels.
Assuming the standard model, the probabilities to observe the measured values
or larger for the detector-level dependencies are 7.4*10^(-3) and 2.2*10^(-3)
for M(ttbar) and |Delta-y| respectively. Lastly, we study the dependence of the
asymmetry on the transverse momentum of the ttbar system at the detector level.
These results are consistent with previous lower-precision measurements and
provide additional quantification of the functional dependencies of the
asymmetry.

ABSTRACT: A search is presented for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with top quarks using the full Run II proton-antiproton collision data set, corresponding to 9.45 fb^{-1}, collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. No significant excess over the expected background is observed, and 95% credibility-level upper bounds are placed on the cross section σ(tt[over ¯]H→lepton+missing transverse energy+jets). For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c^{2}, we expect to set a limit of 12.6 and observe a limit of 20.5 times the standard model rate. This represents the most sensitive search for a standard model Higgs boson in this channel to date.

ABSTRACT: We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase β_{s} using the time evolution of B_{s}^{0}→J/ψ(→μ^{+}μ^{-})ϕ(→K^{+}K^{-}) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of β_{s} and the B_{s}^{0} decay-width difference ΔΓ_{s} and measure β_{s}∈[-π/2,-1.51]∪[-0.06,0.30]∪[1.26,π/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of β_{s}, we also determine ΔΓ_{s}=0.068±0.026(stat)±0.009(syst) ps^{-1} and the mean B_{s}^{0} lifetime τ_{s}=1.528±0.019(stat)±0.009(syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.

ABSTRACT: We present a measurement of the mass difference between top ($t$) and
anti-top ($\bar{t}$) quarks using $t\bar{t}$ candidate events reconstructed in
the final state with one lepton and multiple jets. We use the full data set of
Tevatron $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the CDF
II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb$^{-1}$. We
estimate event-by-event the mass difference to construct templates for
top-quark signal events and background events. The resulting mass difference
distribution of data compared to signal and background templates using a
likelihood fit yields $\Delta M_{top} = {M}_{t} - {M}_{\bar{t}} = -1.95 $pm$
1.11 (stat) $pm$ 0.59 (syst)$ and is in agreement with the standard model
prediction of no mass difference.

ABSTRACT: We present a precision measurement of the top-quark mass using the full sample of Tevatron sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions collected by the CDF II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb^{-1}. Using a sample of tt[over ¯] candidate events decaying into the lepton+jets channel, we obtain distributions of the top-quark masses and the invariant mass of two jets from the W boson decays from data. We then compare these distributions to templates derived from signal and background samples to extract the top-quark mass and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets with in situ calibration. The likelihood fit of the templates from signal and background events to the data yields the single most-precise measurement of the top-quark mass, M_{top}=172.85±0.71(stat)±0.85(syst) GeV/c^{2}.

ABSTRACT: We report preliminary results on the analysis of the three-body Y(10860)=> B
barB pi, Y(10860) => (B barB* + c.c.) pi and Y(10860)=> B* barB* pi decays
including an observation of the Y(10860)=> Zb(10610)+- pi-+ => [B barB*+c.c]+-
pi-+ and Y(10860)=> Zb(10650)+- pi-+ => [B* barB*]+- pi-+ decays as
intermediate channels. We measure branching fractions of the three-body decays
to be Br(Y(10860)=> [B barB*+c.c.]+- pi-+)=(28.3+-2.9+-4.6)x10^{-3} and
Br(Y(10860)=> [B* barB*]+- pi-+)=(14.1+-1.9+-2.4)x10^{-3} and set 90% C.L.
upper limit Br(Y(10860)=> [B barB]+- pi-+)<4.0x10^{-3}. We also report results
on the amplitude analysis of the three-body Y(10860)=>Y(nS)pi+pi-, n=1,2,3
decays and the analysis of the internal structure of the three-body
Y(10860)=>hb(mP)pi+pi-, m=1,2 decays. The results are based on a 121.4 1/fb
data sample collected with the Belle detector at a center-of-mass energy near
the Y(10860).

ABSTRACT: AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Insufficient insulin secretion and reduced pancreatic beta cell mass are hallmarks of type 2 diabetes. Here, we focused on a family of serine-threonine kinases known as homeodomain-interacting protein kinases (HIPKs). HIPKs are implicated in the modulation of Wnt signalling, which plays a crucial role in transcriptional activity, and in pancreas development and maintenance. The aim of the present study was to characterise the role of HIPKs in glucose metabolism. METHODS: We used RNA interference to characterise the role of HIPKs in regulating insulin secretion and transcription activity. We conducted RT-PCR and western blot analyses to analyse the expression and abundance of HIPK genes and proteins in the islets of high-fat diet-fed mice. Glucose-induced insulin secretion and beta cell proliferation were measured in islets from Hipk3 ( -/- ) mice, which have impaired glucose tolerance owing to an insulin secretion deficiency. The abundance of pancreatic duodenal homeobox (PDX)-1 and glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β phosphorylation in Hipk3 ( -/- ) islets was determined by immunohistology and western blot analyses. RESULTS: We found that HIPKs regulate insulin secretion and transcription activity. Hipk3 expression was most significantly increased in the islets of high-fat diet-fed mice. Furthermore, glucose-induced insulin secretion and beta cell proliferation were decreased in the islets of Hipk3 ( -/- ) mice. Levels of PDX1 and GSK-3β phosphorylation were significantly decreased in Hipk3 ( -/- ) islets. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Depletion of HIPK3 impairs insulin secretion and glucose tolerance. Decreased levels of HIPK3 may play a substantial role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes.

ABSTRACT: We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson in data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb^{-1}. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z boson to electron or muon pairs, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the ZH production cross section times the H→bb[over ¯] branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c^{2}, we observe (expect) a limit of 7.1 (3.9) times the standard model value.
