ABSTRACT: We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

ABSTRACT: The paper addresses the problem of distribution of high-definition video over fiber-wireless networks. The physical layer architecture with the low complexity envelope detection solution is investigated. We present both experimental studies and simulation of high quality high-definition compressed video transmission over 60 GHz fiber-wireless link. Using advanced video coding we satisfy low complexity and low delay constraints, meanwhile preserving the superb video quality after significantly extended wireless distance.

ABSTRACT: We report on experimental demonstration of 2x2 MIMO-OFDM 5.6-GHz radio over fiber signaling over 20 km WDM-PON with directly modulated (DM) VCSELs for femtocells application. MIMO-OFDM algorithms effectively compensate for impairments in the wireless link. Error-free signal demodulation of 64 subcarrier 4-QAM signals modulated at 198.5 Mb/s net data rate is achieved after fiber and 2 m indoor wireless transmission. We report BER of 7x10(-3) at the receiver for 16-QAM signals modulated at 397 Mb/s after 1 m of wireless transmission. Performance dependence on different wireless transmission path lengths, antenna separation, and number of subcarriers have been investigated.

ABSTRACT: We experimentally demonstrate an 100 Gbit/s hybrid optical fiber-wireless link by employing photonic heterodyning up-conversion of optical 12.5 Gbaud polarization multiplexed 16-QAM baseband signal with two free running lasers. Bit-error-rate performance below the FEC limit is successfully achieved for air transmission distances up to 120 cm.

ABSTRACT: We report on measured optical fiber W-band wireless channel characteristics such as frequency response, channel loss and fading, directivity, channel capacity and phase noise. Our proposed system performs a sextuple frequency up-conversion after 20 km of fiber transmission, followed by a W-band wireless link. Our experimental measurements are intended to provide engineering rules for designing hybrid multi-gigabit W band transmission links.

ABSTRACT: We propose a compact integration system to simultaneously provide wireline and wireless [baseband and ultra-wideband (UWB)] services to end-users in a wavelength-division-multiplexed-passive optical network (WDM-PON). A 1-Gb/s UWB signal is optically generated and shares the same wavelength with the baseband signal. Error-free performance was achieved after 23-km single-mode-fiber (SMF) transmission for both signals and additional 0.4-m wireless transmission for the UWB signal. The low complexity and high spectrum efficiency of this system makes it attractive for deployment of in wireline/wireless converged gigabit optical access networks.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, a novel and simple scheme to realize flexible access for gigabit wireline and impulse radio ultrawideband (IR-UWB) wireless services is proposed. The UWB signals are generated by multi-carrier upconverting and reshaping the baseband signals. The proposed system was experimentally demonstrated with the performances of 2.0-Gb/s data in both baseband and UWB formats after 46-km single mode fiber transmission and further 0.5-m wireless for UWB data. The flexibility of the system is confirmed by investigating the system performance at different data rates including 1.0 and 1.6 Gb/s. Optical wavelength independency and data-rate variability of UWB signal generation makes the system attractive for potential wireline and wireless applications in existing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-passive optical network (PON) systems.

ABSTRACT: A robust 4-channel WDM optical phase modulated 60GHz wireless fiber system is proposed and simulated. In this system, a Fabry-Perot (FP) frequency interleaver is designated to suppress optical carriers for 60GHz signal generation. The simulation results show that this phase modulated WDM system is not susceptible to crosstalk.
