  ABSTRACT: The XIIth International Symposium on Respiratory Viral Infections was convened by The Macrae Group (New York, NY, USA) in Taipei, Taiwan on 11-14 March 2010. This annual symposium provides a forum to discuss recent advances in respiratory virus research in an interdisciplinary fashion with specialists ranging from basic virology, epidemiology, vaccines, antivirals and management strategies. The 2010 symposium provided a detailed examination of lessons learned from the 2009 influenza pandemic with a common theme, emphasized by many speakers, being the importance of international collaboration and cooperation in responding to new infectious disease threats.
