ABSTRACT: Oral controlled drug delivery system have an important area in novel drug delivery system to achieving efficient drug delivery that have poor bioavailability and short gastric residence time(GRT). Several approaches are currently utilized in prolongation of gastric residence time, including floating drug delivery system, swelling system, Bio/muco-adhesive system, high density system, HBS, delaying gastric emptying excipients etc. In this review compile the recent available literature on gastroretentive drug delivery and marketed products have been discussed. In addition, the pharmaceutical basis of their design, their advantages and future potential for oral controlled drug delivery are discussed.
