ABSTRACT: Road image is becoming important for several applications such as car navigation systems, traffic environment research, city modeling. Usually, a road image can be obtained from an aerial image but the resolution of the aerial image is often low, or it contains occlusions by obstacles. Therefore, the update of road image is required. In this paper, we propose a road image mosaicing method using in-vehicle camera images and an aerial image. We first perform image registration of road regions between these images, and then, we generate a large road image by performing image mosaicing of road regions in invehicle camera images. In an experiment, we achieved resolution improvement and occlusions removal, and also succeeded in update of a large road image.

ABSTRACT: This paper proposes a novel method to recognize breathing route during snoring (mouth, nose, and both) using the spectral properties of snoring sounds. Recent studies have reported that nasal closure determines an increase in the number of apneas during sleep. Thus, it is expected that if the seriousness of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) can roughly be estimated by a frequency of oral and oronasal snores at night, a simple device with only a microphone can automatically diagnose OSAS at bedside. In order to realize such device, it is necessary at first to recognize oral, nasal, and oronasal snores from the recorded sounds. Our proposed method can classify snoring sounds into nasal with 85.5%, oral with 86.1%, and oronasal with 70.7% respectively.

ABSTRACT: Geyser-1, a prototype MIPS R3000 CPU with fine grain runtime PG for major computational components in the execution stage is available. Function units such as CLU, shifter, multiplier and divider are power-gated and controlled at runtime such that only the function unit to be used is powered-on to minimize the leakage power. The evaluation results on the real chip reveals that the fine grain runtime PG mechanism works without electric problems. It reduces the leakage power 7% at 25°C and 24% at 80°C. The evaluation results using benchmark programs show that the power consumption can be reduced from 3% at 25°C and 30% at 80°C.

ABSTRACT: Recently, we have proposed an adaptive channel estimation (CE) scheme using one-tap recursive least square (RLS) algorithm (adaptive RLS-CE), where the forgetting factor is adapted to the changing channel condition by the least mean square (LMS) algorithm, for direct sequence-code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) with frequency-domain equalization (FDE). However, the tracking ability for adaptive RLS-CE is limited since the channel estimate obtained from the previously received block is used. In this paper, we introduce the polynomial prediction to improve the tracking ability. We evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of DS-CDMA using polynomial prediction RLS-CE in a frequency-selective fast Rayleigh fading channel by computer simulation.

ABSTRACT: C-based hardware designs are now accepted as means to increase design productivity. Starting with rather algorithmic design descriptions, incremental refinements are applied to generate high level synthesizable descriptions which are further processed by high-level and logic synthesis tools. C-based system level design descriptions, such as in SpecC and SystemC, can give concise and global views on the behaviors of the designs as well as structures, and various types of dependencies, such as control, data, concurrency, and others, can be extracted quickly. These dependencies can be the bases for efficient and effective debugging for all levels of design descriptions. In this paper, graph representations for various dependencies which are extracted from C-based descriptions are introduced. Then techniques on their uses for debugging in various design levels are discussed. We present static and dynamic tracing methods for dependence analysis as well as techniques that try to establish mapping between implementations and C-based design descriptions.

ABSTRACT: Modular component-based robot systems require not only an infrastructure for component management, but also scalability as well as real-time properties. Robot technology (RT)-middleware is a software platform for such component-based robot systems. Each component in the RT-Middleware, so-called "RT-component'' supporting particular robot functions, is based on common object request broker architecture (CORBA). Unfortunately, the RT-Middleware lacks the mechanism for real-time control. In this paper, we extend the framework of the RT-Components to take care of timing constraints. We first enable tasks to have different periods within each RT-Component. We then modify the packet format of the General Inter-ORB Protocol (GIOP) to transfer the information of timing constraints over RT-Components. The performance evaluation on ART-Linux shows that the extended RT-Component framework improves the schedulability of distributed real-time tasks, without causing critical overheads in unmarshaling the modified GIOP packets.

ABSTRACT: Frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion and frequency-domain inter-chip interference (ICI) cancellation can be incorporated into turbo decoding (this is called the MMSE turbo equalization in this paper) to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA). DS-CDMA MMSE turbo equalization requires accurate channel estimation. The performance of MMSE turbo equalization is sensitive to channel estimation accuracy. Recently, we proposed a 2-step maximum likelihood channel estimation (MLCE) for DS-CDMA with FDE. In this paper, we apply 2-step MLCE to DS-CDMA MMSE turbo equalization and evaluate by computer simulation the achievable BER performance in a frequency-selective block Rayleigh fading channel.

ABSTRACT: We created a new entertainment called ldquoAnts in the Pantsrdquo. A user can see many ants moving around on a visual display. The userpsilas hand is placed into a tactile display in the form of a glove that has a matrix of small motors with brushes inside it. When the user places their gloved hand on the visual display, the user can feel a sensation as if ants are crawling up their arm. We have tested the system with more than 500 participants. In response to a questionnaire, about 75% of users responded that the experience was ldquoenjoyablerdquo and 54% that it was ldquorealisticrdquo. Moreover, our work was able to entertain most people regardless of their reaction to the experience. We believe our ldquoAnts in the Pantsrdquo opened the door to a new type of ldquouncomfortable, creepy but enjoyablerdquo entertainment.

ABSTRACT: Frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion can provide a better bit error rate (BER) performance than rake combining. However, the residual inter-chip interference (ICI) is produced after MMSE-FDE and degrades the BER performance. Recently, we showed that frequency-domain ICI cancellation can bring the BER performance close to the theoretical lower bound. To further improve the BER performance, transmit antenna diversity technique is effective. Cyclic delay transmit diversity (CDTD) can increase the number of equivalent paths and hence achieve a large frequency diversity gain. Space-time transmit diversity (STTD) can obtain antenna diversity gain due to the space-time coding and achieve a better BER performance than CDTD. In this paper, we point out that the performance difference between CDTD and STTD is mainly due to the residual ICI. We theoretically show that the introduction of ICI cancellation into DS-CDMA/MMSE-FDE gives almost the same BER performance for CDTD and STTD. This is confirmed by computer simulation.

ABSTRACT: Crab cavities have been installed in the KEKB B-factory rings to compensate the crossing angle at the collision point and thus increase luminosity. The beam operation with crab crossing has been done since February 2007. This is the first experience with such cavities in colliders or storage rings. The crab cavities have been working without serious issues. While higher specific luminosity than the geometrical gain has been achieved, further study is necessary and under way to reach the prediction of simulation.

ABSTRACT: This paper describes a structural design technique for rehabilitation robot intended for upper-limb post-stroke therapy. First, a novel approach to a rehabilitation robot is proposed and the features of the robot are explained. Second, the direct kinematics and the inverse kinematics of the proposed robot structure are derived. Finally, a mechanical design procedure is explained that achieves a compromise between the required motion range and assuring the workspace safety. The suitability of a portable escort type structure for upper limb rehabilitation of both acute and chronic stroke is discussed.

ABSTRACT: We propose a method for accurate vehicle localization. The proposed method detects a vehicle's location and traveling lane by matching between a pre-constructed range data map and laser scanner data sequences measured while the vehicle runs. The range data map consists of an absolute position on the road and range data at the position. We use dynamic time warping (DTW) to align multiple range data sequences. Experiments using 40 data sequences collected while a vehicle ran on the same route with multiple traffic lanes were conducted. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of vehicle localization and traveling lane classification.

ABSTRACT: The authors have studied the feasibility of making sharp and clean
electrical contacts with high-temperature superconductors by cleaving
single-crystal Y-Ba-Cu-O and Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films in a stream of
evaporated noble metals forming SN (superconductor/normal metal)
contacts at the revealed cross-sectional edge surfaces of the films.
With this technique, contact resistances on the order of 10-9
to 10-8 Ωcm2 have been consistently
obtained. For a structure with an oxide/Au/oxide configuration, the
interface resistance was found to show a flat temperature dependence
below Tc. Material dependence and anisotropy were observed in
the contact resistance. When (110)-oriented films were cleaved in two
perpendicular directions, surfaces normal to the c-axis gave interfaces
with resistance more than one order of magnitude larger than the other
direction. Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O/Au interfaces showed a tendency of giving
slightly lower resistance than Y-Ba-Cu-O/Au interfaces

ABSTRACT: A focused ion beam (FIB) system, fully computer controlled and containing a mounting stage with a laser interferometer, is used to investigate the accuracy of resist exposure fabrication and the mark detection. Fabricated patterns in poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and chloromethylated polystyrene (CMS) resists on both Si and SiO 2 substrates showed good pattern width accuracy. This appears to be because of the absence of the proximity effect in ion beam exposure and the stability of both the Au–Si–Be liquid metal ion source and the FIB system itself. The authors examine the use of Si, Be, and Au FIB’s for the detection of alignment marks covered with PMMA and CMS resists. Detection of marks covered with PMMA resist was possible because of the resist sputter etching produced by the FIB irradiation. For marks covered with CMS resist, the addition of a differential amplifier enabled successful detection here as well.

ABSTRACT: Focused ion beam (FIB) processes have been developed for Y–Ba–Cu–O superconductor films. A Y–Cu liquid metal ion source has been fabricated, using a Y 67 –Cu 33 eutectic alloy as the ion source. As‐sputtered Y–Ba–Cu–O film etch rate ratios to GaAs(100) and Si(100) substrates are 0.28 and 1.4 for 130‐keV Au+ FIB ion etching, respectively. Y–Ba–Cu–O submicron patterns have been demonstrated by using FIB lithography and Cl 2 reactive ion beam etching. Moreover, a Y–Ba–Cu–O superconducting line with 4‐μm linewidth has been fabricated by annealing an as‐sputtered Y–Ba–Cu–O line pattern. T c control of Y–Ba–Cu–O film has been achieved by 200‐keV Ne+, using conventional ion implantation and 300 keV Si++ FIB ion implantation.
