Article: Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ are studied with a dataset corresponding to $1.0\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment. The angular distribution is measured in bins of dimuon invariant mass squared and found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations. Integrating the differential branching fraction over the full dimuon invariant mass range yields a total branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}) = (4.36 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.18)\times 10^{-7}$. These measurements are the most precise to date of the $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay.09/2012; -
Article: Search for the rare decay KS -> mu+ mu-
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A search for the decay KS -> mu+ mu- is performed, based on a data sample of 1.0 fb^-1 of pp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The observed number of candidates is consistent with the background-only hypothesis, yielding an upper limit of BR(KS -> mu+ mu-) < 11 (9) x 10^-9 at 95 (90)% confidence level. This limit is a factor of thirty below the previous measurement.09/2012; -
Article: Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) and the direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 gamma
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0 -> K*0 gamma and Bs0 phi gamma has been measured using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The value obtained is BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) = 1.23 +/- 0.06(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) +/- 0.10(fs/fd), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is associated with the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average value for BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma), the branching fraction BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) is measured to be (3.5 +/- 0.4) x 10^{-5}. The direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 gamma decays has also been measured with the same data and found to be A(CP)(B0 -> K*0 gamma) = (0.8 +/- 1.7(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.))%. Both measurements are the most precise to date and are in agreement with the previous experimental results and theoretical expectations.09/2012; -
Article: Measurement of the fraction of \Y1S originating from \chib1P decays in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7\tev$
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The production of \chib1P mesons in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $7\tev$ is studied using $32\invpb$ of data collected with the \lhcb detector. The $\chib1P$ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode $\chib1P \to \Y1S\g \to \mumu\g$. The fraction of \Y1S originating from \chib1P decays in the \Y1S transverse momentum range $6 < \pt^{\Y1S} < 15\gevc$ and rapidity range $2.0 < y^{\Y1S} < 4.5$ is measured to be $(20.7\pm 5.7\pm 2.1^{+2.7}_{-5.4})%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last gives the range of the result due to the unknown \Y1S and \chib1P polarizations.09/2012; -
Article: Measurement of the $B^0_s\rightarrow J/\psi K^{*0}$ branching fraction and angular amplitudes
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A search for the decay $B^0_s\rightarrow J/\psi K^{*0}$ with $K^{*0} \rightarrow K^-\pi^+$ is performed with 0.37 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment, finding a $\Bs \to J\psi K^-\pi^+$ peak of $114 \pm 11$ signal events. The $K^-\pi^+$ mass spectrum of the candidates in the $B^0_s$ peak is dominated by the $K^{*0}$ contribution. Subtracting the non-resonant $K^-\pi^+$ component, the branching fraction of \BsJpsiKst is $(4.4_{-0.4}^{+0.5} \pm 0.8) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. A fit to the angular distribution of the decay products yields the \Kst polarization fractions $f_L = 0.50 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.02$ and $f_{||} = 0.19^{+0.10}_{-0.08} \pm 0.02$.08/2012; -
Article: Observation of the decay B0 -> D0bar K+ K- and evidence for Bs -> D0bar K+ K-
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The first observation of the decay B0 -> D0bar K+ K- is reported from an analysis of 0.62 fb-1 of pp collision data collected with the LHCb detector. Its branching fraction is measured relative to that of the topologically similar decay B0 -> D0bar pi+ pi- to be BR(B0 -> D0bar K+ K-)/BR(B0 -> D0bar pi+ pi-) = 0.056+-0.011+-0.007, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The significance of the signal is 5.8 sigma. Evidence, with 3.8 sigma significance, for Bs -> D0bar K+ K- decays is also presented, with a relative branching fraction of BR(Bs -> D0bar K+ K-)/BR(B0 -> D0bar K+ K-) = 0.90+-0.27+-0.20.07/2012; -
Article: Measurement of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A precise determination of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime can be used to constrain contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model in the $B_s^0$ meson system. Conventional approaches select $B$ meson decay products that are significantly displaced from the $B$ meson production vertex. As a consequence, $B$ mesons with low decay times are suppressed, introducing a bias to the decay time spectrum which must be corrected. This analysis uses a technique that explicitly avoids a lifetime bias by using a neural network based trigger and event selection. Using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the LHCb experiment, the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime is measured as $1.455 \pm 0.046 \; \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.006 \; \mathrm{(syst.)} \, \mathrm{ps}.$07/2012; -

Article: Measurement of the Bs effective lifetime in the J/psi f0(980) final state
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The effective lifetime of the Bs meson in the decay mode Bs->J/\psi f0(980) is measured using 1.0/fb of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The result is 1.700 +/- 0.040 +/- 0.026 ps where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. As the final state is CP-odd, and CP violation in this mode is measured to be small, the lifetime measurement can be translated into a measurement of the decay width of the heavy Bs mass eigenstate, \Gamma_H = (0.588 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.009)/ps.07/2012; -
Article: Electrical characteristic analysis using low-frequency noise in low-temperature polysilicon thin film transistors.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: This study carried out an electrical characteristic analysis using low-frequency noise (LFN) in top gate p-type low-temperature polysilicon thin film transistors (LTPS TFTs) with different active layer thicknesses between 40 nm and 80 nm. The transfer characteristic curves show that the 40-nm device has better electrical characteristics compared with the 80-nm device. The carrier number fluctuation, with and without correlated mobility fluctuation model in both devices, has modeled well the measured noise. On the other hand, the trap density and coulomb scattering in the 40-nm device are smaller compared with the 80-nm device. To confirm the effectiveness of the LFN noise analysis, the trap densities at a grain boundary are extracted using in both devices the similar methods of Proano et al. and Levinson et al. That is, coulomb scattering, caused by the trapped charges at or near the interface, has a greater effect on the device with inferior electrical properties. Based on the LFN and the quantitative analysis of the trap density at a grain boundary, the interface traps between the active layer and the gate insulator can explain the devices' electrical degradation.Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology 07/2012; 12(7):5532-6. · 1.56 Impact Factor -
Article: Measurement of prompt hadron production ratios in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 0.9 and 7 TeV
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The charged-particle production ratios $\bar{p}/p$, $K^-/K^+$, $\pi^-/\pi^+$, $(p + \bar{p})/(\pi^+ + \pi^-)$, $(K^+ + K^-)/(\pi^+ + \pi^-)$ and $(p + \bar{p})/(K^+ + K^-)$ are measured with the LHCb detector using $0.3 {\rm nb^{-1}}$ of $pp$ collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ TeV and $1.8 {\rm nb^{-1}}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ and pseudorapidity $\eta$. The production ratios are compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo generator settings, none of which are able to describe adequately all observables. The ratio $\bar{p}/p$ is also considered as a function of rapidity loss, $\Delta y \equiv y_{\rm beam} - y$, and is used to constrain models of baryon transport.06/2012; -
Article: Measurement of $b$-hadron branching fractions for two-body decays into charmless charged hadrons
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.37 fb^-1 collected by the LHCb experiment in 2011, the following ratios of branching fractions are measured: B(B0 -> pi+ pi-) / B(B0 -> K+pi-) = 0.262 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.017, (fs/fd) * B(Bs -> K+K-) / B(B^0 -> K+pi-) = 0.316 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.019, (fs/fd) * B(Bs ->pi+ K-) / B(B0 -> K+pi-) = 0.074 +/- 0.006 +/- 0.006, (fd/fs) * B(B0 -> K+K-) / B(Bs -> K+K-) = 0.018 {+ 0.008 - 0.007} +/- 0.009, (fs/fd) * B(Bs -> pi+pi-) / B(B0 -> pi+pi-) = 0.050 {+ 0.011 - 0.009} +/- 0.004, B(Lambda_b -> p pi-) / B(Lambda_b -> p K-) = 0.86 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.05, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Using the current world average of B(B0 -> K+pi-) and the ratio of the strange to light neutral B meson production fs/fd measured by LHCb, we obtain: B(B0 -> pi+pi-) = (5.08 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.37) x 10^-6, B(Bs -> K+K-) = (23.0 +/- 0.7 +/- 2.3) x 10^-6, B(Bs -> pi+K-) = (5.4 +/- 0.4 +/- 0.6) x 10^-6, B(B0 -> K+K-) = (0.11 {+ 0.05 - 0.04} +/- 0.06) x 10^-6, B(Bs -> pi+pi-) = (0.95 {+ 0.21 - 0.17} +/- 0.13) x 10^-6. The measurements of B(Bs -> K+K-), B(Bs -> pi+ K-) and B(B0 -> K+K-) are the most precise to date. The decay mode Bs -> pi+pi- is observed for the first time with a significance of more than 5 sigma.06/2012; -
Article: Measurement of the isospin asymmetry in $B \to K^{(*)}\mu^+\mu^-$ decays
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The isospin asymmetries of $B \to K^{(*)}\mu^+\mu^-$ decays and the partial branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^0\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^+ \to K^{*+}\mu^+\mu^-$ are measured as a function of the di-muon mass squared $q^2$ using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $B \to K\mu^+\mu^-$ isospin asymmetry integrated over $q^2$ is negative, deviating from zero with over 4 $\sigma$ significance. The $B \to K^{*}\mu^+\mu^-$ decay measurements are consistent with the Standard Model prediction of negligible isospin asymmetry. The observation of the decay $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}\mu^+\mu^-$ is reported with 5.7 $\sigma$ significance. Assuming that the branching fraction of $B^0 \to K^0\mu^+\mu^-$ is twice that of $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}\mu^+\mu^-$, the branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^0\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B \to K^{*+}\mu^+\mu^-$ are found to be ($0.31^{+0.07}_{-0.06}) \times 10^{-6}$ and ($1.16\pm0.19) \times 10^{-6}$, respectively.05/2012; -

Article: Measurement of the Ds+ - Ds- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Heavy quark production in 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC is not necessarily flavour symmetric. The production asymmetry, A_P, between Ds+ and Ds- mesons is studied using the \phi\pi(+/-) decay mode in a data sample of 1.0/fb collected with the LHCb detector. The difference between \pi+ and \pi- detection efficiencies is determined using the ratios of fully reconstructed to partially reconstructed D*(+/-) decays. The overall production asymmetry in the Ds rapidity region 2.0 to 4.5 with transverse momentum larger than 2 GeV is measured to be A_P=(-0.33 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.10)%. This result can constrain models of heavy flavour production.05/2012; -

Article: Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0 → K*0 μ+ μ-.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The angular distributions and the partial branching fraction of the decay B0 → K*0 μ+ μ- are studied by using an integrated luminosity of 0.37 fb(-1) of data collected with the LHCb detector. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, A(FB), the fraction of longitudinal polarization, F(L), and the partial branching fraction dB/dq2 are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The measurements are in good agreement with the standard model predictions and are the most precise to date. In the dimuon invariant mass squared range 1.00-6.00 GeV2/c4, the results are A(FB)=-0.06(-0.14)(+0.13)±0.04, F(L)=0.55±0.10±0.03, and dB/dq2=(0.42±0.06±0.03)×10(-7) c4/GeV2. In each case, the first error is statistical and the second systematic.Physical Review Letters 05/2012; 108(18):181806. · 7.37 Impact Factor -
Article: Analysis of the resonant components in Bs->J/\psi\pi+\pi-
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The decay Bs->J/\psi\pi+\pi- can be exploited to study CP violation. A detailed understanding of its structure is imperative in order to optimize its usefulness. An analysis of this three-body final state is performed using a 1.0/fb sample of data produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC and collected by the LHCb experiment. A modified Dalitz plot analysis of the final state is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. The \pi+\pi- system is shown to be dominantly in an S-wave state, and the CP-odd fraction in this Bs decay is shown to be greater than 0.977 at 95% confidence level. In addition, we report the first measurement of the J/\psi\pi+\pi- branching fraction relative to J/\psi\phi\ of (19.79 +/- 0.47 +/- 0.52)%.04/2012; -
Article: Measurement of the CP-violating phase \phi s in Bs->J/\psi\pi+\pi- decays
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase phi_s in Bs decays is of prime importance in probing new physics. Here 7421 +/- 105 signal events from the dominantly CP-odd final state J/\psi pi+ pi- are selected in 1/fb of pp collision data collected at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. A time-dependent fit to the data yields a value of phi_s=-0.019^{+0.173+0.004}_{-0.174-0.003} rad, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence of direct CP violation is found.04/2012;
