ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of common perinatal risk factors on the disappearance of the anterior vascular capsule of the lens (AVCL). Direct ophthalmologic examinations were performed on 75 neonates (27 to 35 weeks gestational age) in the first 24 hours after birth, using the degree of involution of the AVCL to estimate gestational age in high risk pregnancy. Our results show that the gradual disappearance of the AVCL is not influenced by perinatal risk factors, such as maternal preeclampsia, prenatal administration of steroids, neonatal infection and low birth weight, confirming the clinical value of this test in the assessment of gestational age in high risk babies.
