  • Article: Giant cell carcinoma causing rapidly progressive respiratory failure as the presenting feature of AIDS.

    ABSTRACT: The incidence of lung cancer has been increasing among HIV-positive patients. The majority of these cases were in patients previously diagnosed as HIV-positive and treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Here, we report a 56-year-old male patient with lung cancer, who was diagnosed as HIV-positive after the onset of neck pain and lumbago and thus, was not treated with anti-AIDS therapy. The patient developed rapidly progressive and fatal respiratory failure. Autopsy demonstrated giant cell carcinoma of the lung responsible for carcinomatous lymphangitis. This case highlighted the possibility that pulmonary carcinogenesis in HIV-positive patients is not necessarily associated with HAART therapy.

    ABSTRACT: The conflict between inland fisheries and Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo in Japan has become increasingly serious as the cormorant population has increased rapidly. Various repellent stimuli have been used to deter cormorants from predating on commercial fish stocks. In this study, we evaluated the effect of psychological stress on Great Cormorants by using heart rate as a stress indicator. When resting, without any stimulus, the mean heart rate of the cormorants was 77–83 bpm. Heart rates became elevated by three to four times when cormorants were exposed to pyrotechnics, but the heart rate response to pyrotechnics gradually diminished as the same stimuli were repeated. A sine curve acoustic stimuli (250 Hz–10 kHz) did not induce significant increase in the heart rate compared to the resting condition, but a raptor’s call and radio sound did (262–264 bpm). The visual stimuli of a human or a human-shaped doll induced a remarkable increase in heart rate (260–328 bpm). Our results indicate that most commonly-used repellent stimuli induce increased heart rates and cause some psychological stress to cormorants. However, our results also suggest that cormorants quickly become accustomed to repeated stimuli. Changing the types of stimuli or integrating a range of stimuli may be necessary to sustain the effect of repellents.

  • Article: Substrate specificities of extracellular proteases produced by marine putrefactive bacteria, Shewanella putrefaciens and Alteromonas haloplanktis

    ABSTRACT: Substrate specificities of proteases produced by two putrefactive marine bacteria, Shewanella putrefaciens and Alteromonas haloplanktis, were surveyed by using peptidyl-7-amino-4-methylcoumarin (MCA-substrates). Shewanella putrefaciens produced trypsin-like enzyme(s) showing broad spectrum specificity and chymotrypsin-like enzyme specifically hydrolysing Glt-Gly-Gly-Phe-MCA. Alteromonas haloplanktis produced high activity of ammopeptidase and trypsin-like enzyme(s) preferring Z-Phe-Arg-MCA, Bz-Arg-MCA and Boc-Leu-Ser-Thr-Arg-MCA. The two organisms would be able to utilize different proteins for their growth.

  • Article: Synthesis and Some Properties of Panulose. A New Keto‐Oligosaccharide

    ABSTRACT: During the studies on the transformation of oligosaccharides in alkaline solution, we obtained a new keto-trisaccharide. This oligosaccharide was obtained by the Lobry de Bruyne-Alberda van Ekenstein transformation of panose. The new saccharide was separated from panose by paper chromatography and cellulose column chromatography using the solvent system containing boric acid. The trisaccharide contains one mole of fructose moiety in its structure. The results of the partial hydrolysis by acids and enzymes suggested the structure of 62--glucosyl maltulose 0--D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-0--D-Glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-D-Fructosel. The novel saccharide was named panulose, as this was obtained by the isomerization of panose.

  • Article: Usefulness of histological criteria for assessing the adequacy of diets for Panulirus japonicus phyllosoma larvae

    ABSTRACT: Mass seed production depends a great deal on the development of adequate artificial diets, which in turn depends on the development of methods to speedily and reliably assess the nutritional value of experimental diets. This study examined the sensitivity of light histological and ultrastructural criteria to detect differences in the nutritional value of diets for the Japanese spiny lobster, Panulirus japonicus (V. Siebold), phyllosoma larvae. The acceptability of diets, the apparent absorption of lipids and carbohydrates by the midgut gland cells, and the characteristics of various cell types were determined in 43-, 106- and 143-day-old intermoult phyllosoma fed diets of Mytilus edulis (L.) ovary alone (MO) or in combination with Anemia (MO+AR), which so far have given the best results in terms of growth and percentage of metamorphosis into puerulus, and two other diets considered less efficient, viz. Mytilus edulis testis (MT) and Artemia (AR).Acceptability of all diets attained 100% within 10 min of feeding as revealed by observation through the semitransparent cuticle of the larvae. Histological examination of larvae that ingested comparable amounts of food revealed pronounced variation in the absorption of lipids and carbohydrates by the midgut gland cells (AR<MT≤MO+ARp<MO), in the size and ultrastructure of the midgut gland epithelial cells (AR<MT<MO+AR<MO), in the number, size, and electron-dense body content of the haemocytes (AR<MT≤MO+ARp<MO), and in the size of cells lining the midgut gland tubules (AR≤MT≤MO+AR<MO). Growth and survival followed the order MT≤AR<MO+AR≤MO with maximum survival rates around 25–35% on the more efficient diets. Thus, phyllosoma fed on each diet presented a distinctive set of histological characteristics. Moreover, histological variation between diets was detected earlier than, and yet correlated strongly with, the results on growth and survival. This suggests that histological criteria constitute a practical means for the preliminary assessment of the acceptability and nutritional value of diets for the Japanese spiny lobster.

    ABSTRACT: This study describes comprehensive polling of transcription start and termination sites and analysis of previously unidentified full-length complementary DNAs derived from the mouse genome. We identify the 5' and 3' boundaries of 181,047 transcripts with extensive variation in transcripts arising from alternative promoter usage, splicing, and polyadenylation. There are 16,247 new mouse protein-coding transcripts, including 5154 encoding previously unidentified proteins. Genomic mapping of the transcriptome reveals transcriptional forests, with overlapping transcription on both strands, separated by deserts in which few transcripts are observed. The data provide a comprehensive platform for the comparative analysis of mammalian transcriptional regulation in differentiation and development.

    ABSTRACT: For infrared absorption measurements, the following five isotopic polyglycines have been prepared: ordinary polyglycine (—NHCH2CO—)n, N-deuterated polyglycine (—NDCH2CO—)n, C-deuterated polyglycine (—NHCD2CO—)n, completely deuterated polyglycine (—NDCD2CO—)n, and N15-substituted polyglycine (—15NHCH2CO—)n. Infrared spectra have been observed both in the I and II forms of each of these five isotopic polyglycines in the spectral region of 4000–300 cm.−1. On the basis of the comparison of these spectra with each other, a nearly complete set of assignments of the observed bands of polyglycines has been given.

  • Article: The effect of temperature on Aeromonas hydrophila infection in goldfish, Carassius auratus

    ABSTRACT: The effect of temperature on Aeromonas hydrophila infection in goldfish, Carassius auratus, was studied using A. hydrophila strain A-3500. After comparison of four different infection methods, subcutaneous injection was selected. Different test temperatures were also tested and higher mortality was observed at 17 and 25°C during a 15-day period. SDS-PAGE analysis of outer membrane proteins prepared from A. hydrophila cultured at 10, 17, 25 and 32°C in formulated salt water showed different protein profiles. For example, a 40-kDa band was found only at 17 and 25°C. Phagocytic rates of A. hydrophila by goldfish macrophages at 10, 17, 25 and 32°C were 20.46 ± 2.07, 16.15 ± 1.39, 15.94 ± 1.85 and 22.22 ± 2.49%, respectively. The results indicated that temperature affects both the cell membrane structure of A. hydrophila and phagocytic activity of goldfish macrophages, resulting in varying fish mortality when infected at different temperatures.
