Article: Family history tools in primary care: does one size fit all?

ABSTRACT: Family health history (FHH) has potential value in many health care settings. This review discusses the potential uses of FHH information in primary care and the need for tools to be designed accordingly. We developed a framework in which the attributes of FHH tools are mapped against these different purposes. It contains 7 attributes mapped against 5 purposes. In considering different FHH tool purposes, it is apparent that different attributes become more or less important, and that tools for different purposes require different implementation and evaluation strategies. The context in which a tool is used is also relevant to its effectiveness. For FHH tools, it is unlikely that 'one size fits all', although appreciation of different purposes, users and contexts should facilitate the development of different applications from single FHH platforms.Public Health Genomics 01/2012; 15(3-4):181-8. · 2.33 Impact Factor -

ABSTRACT: Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans in sludge of sewage treatment plant, paper mill sludge, coal fired power plant flyash and contaminated soil from India have been analyzed by HRGC-HRMS applying the isotopic dilution technique. The total concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs were 76.615 pg I-TEQ/g, 11.319 pg I-TEQ/g, 96.316 pg I-TEQ/g and 0.401 pg I-TEQ/g in sewage sludge, paper mill sludge, contaminated soil and flyash, respectively. PCDDs were the predominant contributors to the total PCDDs/Fs in paper mill sludge, contaminated soil and flyash while the contribution of PCDFs was higher in sewage sludge. Recovery rates of spiked 13C12-labeled standard compounds were calculated and found within the range of 50-97 % for all the samples. The concentration levels observed in this study were lower than the 300 pg I-TEQ/g level, which was considered by USEPA as a regulatory limit for dioxins in land applied sludge.Organohalogen CompoundsVol. 73, 1842-1846 (2011). 01/2011; -
Article: RESIDUES OF PERSISTENT ORGANOCHLORINE PESTICIDES IN SOILS FROM VARIABLE CROPPING PATTERN AGRICULTURE AREAS

ABSTRACT: This paper presents the levels of organochlorine pesticides in agricultural soils from national capital region, Delhi. Among OCPs HCH, DDT endosulphan and dieldrin ranged between <0.01-94.73 ng g-1, <0.01-15.79 ng g-1, <0.01-7.57 ng g-1 and <0.01-2.38 ng g-1, respectively. α/γ HCH ratio was 4.00 indicates technical HCH usage. The ratio of p,p’-DDT/ p,p’-DDE and p,p’-DDT/∑DDT reflect the contamination by aged DDT or conversion of DDT isomers. Pesticides contamination levels were lower than soil quality guideline values stipulated by Canada, However, pesticides in agricultural soils is a matter of concern for future food chain accumulation and human health so; regular investigation of pesticide residues is recommended on soil health and contamination levels.Organohalogen CompoundsVol. 73, 1851-1854 (2011). 01/2011; -
Article: POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYLS IN SOILS FROM CROPLAND AREAS OF NORTH INDIA

ABSTRACT: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) measured in agricultural soils from north India. The ∑PCBs were range between <0.01 – 99.40 ng g-1 (dry wt.) with the mean of 13.44±0.06 ng g-1 (dry wt.). The concentration of DL-PCBs was ranged between 0.37-19.09 ng g-1 (dry wt.) with an average of 6.26±0.03 ng g-1 (dry wt.). PCB-105 (25%), PCB-114 (18%) and PCB-118 (18%), were the dominant congeners. Ortho PCBs account 61% and, non ortho PCBs contributed 18% to total DL-PCBs. The toxicity equivalent calculated using WHO 2005-TEFs and range from 0.01 to 105.40 pg WHO 2005-TEQ g-1 (dry wt.) with the mean of 13.78±0.11 pg WHO 2005-TEQ g-1 (dry wt.). Conference Proceeding: Recognizing & interpreting Indian Sign Language gesture for Human Robot Interaction

ABSTRACT: This paper describes a novel approach towards recognizing of Indian Sign Language (ISL) gestures for Humanoid Robot Interaction (HRI). An extensive approach is being introduced for classification of ISL gesture which imparts an elegant way of interaction between humanoid robot HOAP-2 and human being. ISL gestures are being considered as a communicating agent for humanoid robot which is being used in this context explicitly. It involves different image processing techniques followed by a generic algorithm for feature extraction process. The classification technique deals with the Euclidean distance metric. The concrete HRI system has been established for initiation based learning mechanism. The Real time robotics simulation software, WEBOTS has been adopted to simulate the classified ISL gestures on HOAP-2 robot. Article: Sediment Raking as a Tool for Enhancement of Phosphate and Productivity of Water in Tropical Pond System

ABSTRACT: Changes of orthophosphate in water, induced by raking of surface sediment in various ways, were compared. Twelve limnocorrals were installed in a shallow mesotrophic pond using four treatments with triplicate replication:(1) raking of surface sediment (R) by means of a rake for 5min per week (2) fish (F), by introducing six common carp and two silver carp per limnocorral, (3) raking plus fish (R+F) and (4) control (C), without raking and fishless. After day 122, treatments were reversed in limnocorrals byremoving (netting) or introducing fish and stopping or initiating raking. Samples of water and sediment were collected from each limnocorral at weekly interval and monitored for orthophosphate (OP), primary productivity, phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and sediment available phosphorus. Raking in presence of fish caused 280 and 160% increase in OP concentrations in surface and bottom water, respectively, as compared with raking in absence of fish. Net effects of fish and raking were 13-81 and 26-241%, respectively in surface water and 48-100 and 46-95% in bottom water. This implied that in bottom water, net raking effect was 13-161% greater than net fish effect. Increase in PSB population, due to raking plusfish (R+F) was 6-82% higher than increase by fish alone (F). Responses of available-P in sediment were opposite to that of water, being highest in concentration in control (C) followed by fish (F), raking (R) and raking plus fish (R+F). The primary productivity showed variations parallel with that of orthophosphate of water. Article: Density dependent ambient ammonium as the key factor for optimization of stocking density of common carp in small holding tanks

ABSTRACT: Advanced fry of common carp (1.6 ± 0.2 g) were reared in experimental outdoor tanks (4500 l; 3 × 1.5 × 1 m) for 312 or 151 days under six stocking conditions of 8, 13, 16, 32, 48 and 64 fish per tank for ascertaining the threshold and critical levels of ammonium and, hence, to recommend the optimum stocking density of common carp for culture under rearing stage conditions. The samples of water were monitored from each tank at regular intervals for water quality parameters as well as for ammonium concentrations. Fishes were harvested at the end of the experiment. The results revealed a significant decrease in fish growth as stocking density increased. Absence of mortality and favorable growth resulted in maximum fish biomass at the stocking density of 16 fish/tank, but the heavy mortality and stunted growth caused the poor total fish biomass in the highest stocking density employed. The interactions between ammonium and fish growth were expressed at three different concentration levels of ammonium: (a) favorable concentration range (0.262–0.294 mg l− 1), (b) growth inhibiting concentration range (0.313–0.322 mg l− 1) and (c) lethal concentration range (0.323–0.422 mg l− 1). The ambient ammonium concentrations of 0.313 mg l− 1 (or equivalent ammonia concentration of 0.0342 mg l− 1) and 0.323 mg l− 1 (or equivalent ammonia concentration of 0.043 mg l− 1), observed for stocking density ranging from 17 to 19 fish per tank, were considered to be the threshold and critical levels of ammonium that caused growth inhibition and mortality of fish. Fish mortality was higher when the ratio of DO to ammonium remained quite low (< 15), but no mortality occurred with higher ratio. Considering the economic viability of the production system, this appears that the optimum fish stocking density would be around SD 16 (equivalent to 210 g m− 3).Aquaculture. -
Article: Development of Adaptive Modular Active Leg (AMAL) using bipedal robotics technology

ABSTRACT: The objective of the work presented here is to develop a low cost active above knee prosthetic device exploiting bipedal robotics technology which will work utilizing the available biological motor control circuit properly integrated with a Central Pattern Generator (CPG) based control scheme. The approach is completely different from the existing Active Prosthetic devices, designed primarily as standalone systems utilizing multiple sensors and embedded rigid control schemes. In this research, first we designed a fuzzy logic based methodology for offering suitable gait pattern for an amputee, followed by formulating a suitable algorithm for designing a CPG, based on Rayleigh’s oscillator. An indigenous probe, Humanoid Gait Oscillator Detector (HGOD) has been designed for capturing gait patterns from various individuals of different height, weight and age. These data are used to design a Fuzzy inference system which generates most suitable gait pattern for an amputee. The output of the Fuzzy inference system is used for designing a CPG best suitable for the amputee. We then developed a CPG based control scheme for calculating the damping profile in real time for maneuvering a prosthetic device called AMAL (Adaptive Modular Active Leg).Also a number of simulation results are presented which show the stable behavior of knee and hip angles and determine the stable limit cycles of the network.Robotics and Autonomous Systems. -
Article: Development of a clinical assay for detection of GAA mutations and characterization of the GAA mutation spectrum in a Canadian cohort of individuals with glycogen storage disease, type II

ABSTRACT: Glycogen storage disease, type II (GSDII; Pompe disease; acid maltase deficiency) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations of the GAA gene that lead to deficient acid α-glucosidase enzyme activity and accumulation of lysosomal glycogen. Although measurement of acid α-glucosidase enzyme activity in fibroblasts remains the gold standard for the diagnosis of GSDII, analysis of the GAA gene allows confirmation of clinical or biochemical diagnoses and permits predictive and prenatal testing of individuals at risk of developing GSDII. We have developed a clinical molecular test for the detection of GAA mutations based on cycle sequencing of the complete coding region. GAA exons 2–20 are amplified in six independent PCR using intronic primers. The resulting products were purified and sequenced. Preliminary studies using this protocol were conducted with DNA from 21 GSDII-affected individuals from five centers across Canada. In total, 41 of 42 mutations were detected (96.7% detection rate). Mutations spanned intron 1 through exon 19 and included nine novel mutations. Haplotype analysis of recurrent mutations further suggested that three of these mutations are likely to have occurred independently at least twice. Additionally, we report the identification of the c.-32-13T > G GAA mutation in an individual with infantile variant GSDII, despite reports of this mutation being associated almost exclusively with late-onset forms of the disease. The development of a clinical molecular test provides an important tool for the management and counseling of families and individuals with GSDII, and has provided useful information about the GAA mutation spectrum in Canada.Molecular Genetics and Metabolism.
