ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To determine hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway correlated with the development of colon cancer and melanosis coli. METHODS: Protein and mRNA levels of Hh signaling pathway components (SHH, PTCH1, Gli1 and SUFU) in 127 patients with colon cancer, 36 with melanosis coli and 20 adjacent normal mucosal tissues taken from surgical specimens were evaluated using antibody staining and qRT-PCR. RESULTS: In the normal tissues, SHH and PTCH, but not Gli1 or SUFU, were weakly expressed and mainly in the epithelial lining of the colonic mucosa. In cancerous tissues, SHH and Gli1 was uniformly strong while that of PTCH1 was patchy and weak, and SUFU uniformly weak, which paralleled the levels of corresponding mRNA. Elevated protein levels of SHH and PTCH were significantly associated with mucinous CRC tissues. Elevated SUFU protein levels were positively correlated with tumor diameter and invasion. In those with melanosis coli, mRNA levels of SHH, PTCH1, Gli1 and SUFU were very low, which were similar to those of normal tissues; but protein levels of SHH, PTCH1 and Gli1, but not SUFU, were high, which were similar to those of cancerous tissues. CONCLUSIONS: Hh pathway component mRNA and protein levels are aberrantly elevated in colon cancer, which may be potentially useful as molecular classification markers. Further studies are required to determine the role of melanosis coli in the tumorigenesis of colon cancer.

ABSTRACT: First principles hybrid functional calculations have been carried out to study electronic properties of GaAs with Bi alloying effects. It is found that the doping of Bi into GaAs reduces the bandgap due to the intraband level repulsions between Bi induced states and host states, and the Bi-related impurity states originate from the hybridization of Bi-6p and its nearest As-4p orbitals. With the increase of Bi concentration in GaAs, the bandgap decreases monotonously. The calculated optical properties of the undoped and Bi-doped GaAs are similar except the shift toward lower energy of absorption edge and main absorption peaks with Bi doping. These results suggest a promising application of GaBi(x)As(1-x) alloy as semiconductor saturable absorber in Q-switched or mode-locked laser.

ABSTRACT: Operator entanglement of two-qubit joint unitary operations is revisited.
Schmidt number is an important attribute of a two-qubit unitary operation, and
may have connection with the entanglement measure of the unitary operator. We
found the entanglement measure of two-qubit unitary operators is classified by
the Schmidt number of the unitary operators. The exact relation between the
operator entanglement and the parameters of the unitary operator is clarified
too.

ABSTRACT: First-principles calculations were carried out to investigate interfacial
strain effects on spin injection and spin polarization of a magnetic tunnel
junction consisting of half-metallic full-Heusler alloy Co2CrAl and
ferroelectric perovskite NaNbO3. Spin-dependent coherent tunneling was
calculated within the framework of non-equilibrium Green's function technique.
Both spin polarization and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) are affected by the
interfacial strain but their responses to compressive and tensile strains are
different. Spin polarization across the interface is fully preserved under a
compressive strain due to stronger coupling between interfacial atoms, whereas
a tensile strain significantly enhances interface states and lead to
substantial drops in spin polarization and TMR.

ABSTRACT: We study the dynamics of geometric measure of quantum discord (GMQD) under
the influences of two local phase damping noises. Consider the two qubits
initially in arbitrary X states, we find the necessary and sufficient
conditions for which GMQD are unaffected for a finite period. It is further
shown that such results also hold for the non-Markovian dephasing process.

ABSTRACT: First principles calculations are performed for the perfect GaAs crystal, the double Ga vacancies (VGa)₂, and the ternary complex defect (AsGaVAsVGa), using the state-of-the-art computational method with the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid functional to correct the band gap and account for a proper description of the interaction between defects states and bulk states. Three shallow acceptor defect levels are found due to the creation of (VGa)₂ with nearest-neighbor As dangling bonds. However, for GaAs with the ternary complex defects (AsGaVAsVGa), the As antisite AsGa and the VAs'S nearest-neighbor Ga dangling bonds provoke several donor defect states. The lowest donor defect state locates at 0.85 eV below the bottom of conduction band, which is very close to the experimental observation of the EL2 defect level. In addition, structual evolution from (VGa)₂ defect to the ternary defect complex (AsGaVAsVGa) is simulated by ab initio molecular dynamic (MD) calculation at different temperatures. The MD results demonstrate that the ternary complex defect (AsGaVAsVGa) can be converted from the double Ga vacancies (VGa)₂ at room temperature, and it can exist stably at higher temperature. The present work is helpful to unravel the microstructure and the forming mechanism of the EL2 defect, to find out methods to improve the performance of the GaAs saturable absorber by changing the growth conditions of GaAs crystal.

ABSTRACT: Three-dimensional fluorescence lifetime microscopy is achieved by combining wide-field fluorescence lifetime imaging with a remote optical refocusing method. As required for some applications in dynamic research for physics, chemistry, or biology, it is thereby not necessary to move the sample, i.e., the specimen is not disturbed during measurement. Using a fluorescent microsphere the performance of the system has been tested successfully with respect to three-dimensional fluorescence lifetime microscopy as well as time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy.

ABSTRACT: There is limited data on the clinical outcome of patients with pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) pneumonia who received oseltamivir treatment, especially when the treatment was administered more than 48 hours after symptom onset.
During the pandemic in 2009, a cohort of pH1N1 influenza pneumonia was built in China, and their clinical information was collected systematically, and analyzed with Cox models.
920 adults and 541 children with pneumonia who didn't receive corticosteroids were analyzed. In-hospital mortality was higher in adults who did not receive antiviral therapy (18.2%) than those with who received oseltamivir ≤ 2 days (2.9%), between 2-5 days (4.6%) and >5 days after illness onset (4.9%), p<0.01. A similar trend was observed in pediatric patients. Cox regression showed that at 60 days after symptoms onset, 11 patients (10.8%) who did not receive antivirals died versus 4 (1.8%), 18 (3.3%), and 23 (3.7%) patients whose oseltamivir treatment was started ≤ 2 days, between 2-5 days, and >5 days, respectively. For males patients, aged ≥ 14 years and baseline PaO(2)/FiO(2)<200, oseltamivir administration reduced the mortality risk by 92.1%, 88% and 83.5%, respectively. Higher doses of oseltamivir (>3.8 mg/kg/d) did not improve clinical outcome (mortality, higher dose 2.5% vs standard dose 2.8%, p>0.05).
Antiviral therapy might reduce mortality of patients with pH1N1 pneumonia, even when initiated more than 48 hours after onset of illness. Greater protective effects might be in males, patients aged 14-60 years, and patients with PaO(2)/FiO(2)<200.

ABSTRACT: To detect 4 MicroRNA (miRNA) in the stool samples of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients to determine whether these miRNAs could be biomarkers in CRC screening or treatment.
A retrospective comparison study was carried out in the Department of Colorectal Surgery, Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China from September 2009 to March 2011. We detected 4 miRNAs (miR-143, miR-145, miR-21, and miR-106a) in the stool samples of 38 CRC patients and 13 healthy individuals. Total RNA from the stool samples was extracted using the EZNA TM stool RNA kit R6828-01. The miRNA quantification was carried out using TaqMan miRNA assays and the TaqMan Gene Expression Master Mix.
The expression levels of miR-143 and miR-145 in the stool of the CRC patients were lower than in those of the healthy persons (p<0.005, median of 2-∆∆ct). No statistically significant difference was found in the expression levels of both miR-21 and miR-106a between the stool of CRC patients and those of the healthy persons (p>0.05).
The detection of fecal miRNAs is a potential method for CRC diagnosis or screening. Particularly, the down-regulation of fecal miR-143 and miR-145 could be a potential marker for CRC.

ABSTRACT: Many active ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine exist in the form of glycosides. In recent years, the problem of low bioavailability of Chinese glycosides has caused wide public concern. Glycosides and their metabolites organization distribution directly affect glycosides' curative effect after different ways administration. With reports of glycosides medicine for prevention and treatment of brain diseases increasing, the research of glycosides brain tissue distribution is particularly important. According to reports, glycosides widely distributed in tissues, some glycosides can reach the brain, but some glycosides can not. This research reviews glycosides and their metabolites on the role of brain diseases, the distribution in the brain tissue and recent reports of dosage form's effect to brain. So it can provide a reference for the period of such medicine in the prevention and treatment of brain diseases and drug development.

ABSTRACT: We investigate the geometric picture of the level surface of quantum
entanglement and geometric measure of quantum discord(GMQD) of a class of X
states, respectively. This pictorial approach provides us a direct
understanding of the structure of entanglement and GMQD. The dynamic evolution
of GMQD under two typical kinds of quantum decoherence channels is also
investigated. It is shown that there exist a class of initial states for which
the GMQD is not destroyed by decoherence in a finite time interval.
Furthermore, we establish a factorization law between the initial and final
GMQD which allows us to infer the evolution of discord under the influences of
the environment.

ABSTRACT: Nonlocality swapping of bipartite binary correlated boxes can be realized by
a \emph{coupler} ($\chi$) in nonsignaling models. By studying the swapping
process we find that the previous bipartite coupler can be applied to the
swapping of two multipartite boxes, and then generate a multipartite box with
more users than that of any of the boxes before swapping. Here quantum bound
still appears in the scheme. The bipartite coupler also can be applied to a
hybrid scheme of generating a multipartite extremal box from many PR boxes. As
the analogue of multipartite entanglement swapping, we generalize the
nonlocality swapping of bipartite binary boxes to multipartite binary boxes by
using a multipartite coupler $\chi_{N}$, and get the probability of success by
connecting the coupler to the generalized Svetlichny inequality. The
multipartite coupler acting on many multipartite boxes makes multipartite
nonlocality swapping be a more efficient device to manipulate nonlocality
between many users. The results show that Tsirelson's bound for quantum
nonlocality emerges only when two of the $n$ boxes involved in the coupler
process are noisy ones.

ABSTRACT: The pollution status and total concentration of soil heavy metals were analyzed around tailing reservoir of Baotou and iron mining of Bayan Obo located in Inner Mongolia grassland ecosystem. Aim of the study is to control soil heavy metal pollution of grassland mining area and provide the basic information. The results indicated that the soils from different directions of the tailing reservoir were contaminated by Pb, Cu, Zn and Mn. According to the single factor pollution index, the pollution degree was Mn > Zn > Pb > Cu. According to Nemerow integrated pollution index, the indexes of the northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest of the tailing reservoir, were 2.43, 10.2, 1.88, 1.64. Soils from the southeast had the most serious heavy metal contamination because of the dominant wind of northwest. Within 50 m from the edge of tailing reservoir, heavy metal contamination was most serious except Cu. With regard to Bayan Obo iron mining, the single factor pollution index indicated that the soils from the six surveyed regions were contaminated by Pb, Cu, Zn and Mn. The integrated pollution index indicated that the indexes of the six regions, such as the mining area, the dump, outside the dump, outside the urban area, east region of the railway, and west region of the railway, were 14.3, 4.30, 2.69, 3.41, 2.88, and 2.20, respectively. The soil pollution degree of the mining area was the highest. Additionally, the transport of ore resulted in soil heavy metal pollution along railway. In general, soils of the two studied areas had the similar pollution characteristic, and the elements of heavy metal contamination were corresponding with the concentrations of tailings. The health and stabilization of grassland ecosystem are being threatened by soil heavy metals.

ABSTRACT: We investigate the dynamics of quantum discord during the purification
process. In the case of Werner states, it is shown that quantum discord is
increased after a round of purification protocol. We call this process quantum
correlation purification in analogy with entanglement purification.
Furthermore, quantum mutual information and classical correlation is also
increased during this process. We also give an analytic expression for a class
of higher dimensional states which have additive quantum discord.

ABSTRACT: Two noninteracting atoms, initially entangled in Bell states, are coupled to a one-mode cavity. Based on the reduced non-perturbative quantum master equation, the entanglement evolution of the two atoms with decay is investigated beyond rotating-wave approximation. It is shown that the counter-rotating wave terms have great influence on the disentanglement behavior. The phenomenon of entanglement sudden death and entanglement sudden birth will occur. ABSTRACT: Universal set of quantum gates are realized from the conduction-band electron spin qubits of quantum dots embedded in a microcavity via two-channel Raman interaction. All of the gate operations are independent of the cavity mode states, \emph{i.e.}, insensitive to the thermal cavity field. Individual addressing and effective switch of the cavity mediated interaction are directly possible here. Meanwhile, gate operations also can be carried out in parallel. The simple realization of needed interaction for selective qubits makes current scenario more suitable for scalable quantum computation.

ABSTRACT: We investigate a scheme for implementing quantum dense coding via atomic ensembles, where prior distribution of the quantum entangled state is not needed. Our scheme also combines another two distinct advantages: atomic ensembles qubits with long coherent time serve as memory qubits and phtonic qubit as flying qubit. Thus our suggestion may offer a simple and easy way of demonstrating quantum dense coding experimentally via atomic ensembles.
