    Article: Large-Scale Machine Translation: An Interlingua Approach

    ABSTRACT: In this paper we discuss the design and development of an interlingua for a large-scale MT project. We also discuss how the resulting KANT interlingua constrains complexity, supports staged development, evolves in a balanced fashion, and seeks maximal coverage. We address issues such as granularity of the data representation, its specification, the types of information it encodes, and how it supports a modular system architecture. Our experience shows that through a careful, reasoned design and implementation effort, it is possible to achieve multilingual target-language generation for extensive technical domains.     Article: Tooling the Lexicon Acquisition Process for Large-Scale KBMT

    ABSTRACT: Large-scale lexical knowledge acquisition is one of the most time critical steps in developing a knowledge-based machine translation system. In particular, developing the syntactic lexicon for the target language can be an unwieldy task, as on-line knowledge assets are likely to be more scarce than for the source language. This paper addresses this problem within the KANT machine translation system and describes how we structure the KA process to address this problem. This was done by first determining the nature of the desired process and then developing tools to implement that process. The tools themselves and the ways in which the helped us to realize out design goals are described.     ABSTRACT: : Interlingua-based systems have been used extensively and successfully for machine translation. In this paper we discuss our efforts in specifying an interlingua for a large-scale MT project. We present our rationale for inclusion and exclusion of various types of linguistic and extralinguistic information. We also discuss how the resulting KANT interlingua constrains complexity, supports staged development, evolves in a balanced fashion, and seeks maximal coverage. We address issues such as granularity of the data representation, recovery from degradation, specification of the interlingua, and incremental development. Our experience indicates that through a careful, reasoned design and implementation effort, it is possible to scale up a prototype interlingua-based system to achieve multilingual target-language generation for extensive technical domains.     ABSTRACT: Research in machine translation (MT) has resulted in a number of Machine Translation systems that are based on the interlingua approach. This paper reports the results of designing an interlingua for a large-scale, practical MT system designed to translate technical information from English into a number of target languages. After an analysis of the main features of the translation problem faced by this system we describe the principles underlying our design decisions. We address issues such as the design and development methodology, the grain size of the representation, and our efforts to endow the interlingua representation with the ability to degrade gracefully. We conclude that large-scale MT of technical documentation can be achieved with an interlingua-based architecture if the pivotal point of the system, the interlingua, has been designed in a systemsoriented manner.
