ABSTRACT: The shaker modulation technique is demonstrated for ultrabroadband
detection of terahertz (THz) radiation with a low-temperature-grown GaAs
photoconductive (PC) antenna gated with 15 fs laser pulses. The
differentiation of the time-resolved waveforms with the shaker
modulation is advantageous to enhance the high-frequency components of
the detected radiation without degrading the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)
because the PC response function determined by the temporal profile of
the gating carrier number rapidly decreases with the increase in
frequency. With the quantitative comparison of SNR between PC and
electro-optic detection, the PC detection of radiation with the shaker
modulation technique is promising for further spectroscopic application.
The detection of radiation up to 60 THz is demonstrated
