Conference Proceeding: Aplicação da sintonia IMC no controlador PID em sistemas não-lineares simulados com ScicosLab
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: In the process industry the loop problem is how to choose a suitable set of PID parameters because of their influence on the asymptotic stability of the system. This paper develops a PID control algorithm based on Internal Model Control (IMC) design for linear and nonlinear control systems in the discrete-time domain under satisfactory performance. Compared with traditional feedback controllers, IMC can indicate the relationship between tuning parameters to the closed-loop dynamic and robustness and guaranteed control performance. Validation results against linear and nonlinear physical plant models are convincing, with excellent closed-loop responses and good robustness in the presence of practical constraints, time-varying parameters and disturbances.

ABSTRACT: This work demonstrates a simulation environment, based on Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) technique, designed for utilization as an operator training tool and with potentiality, at a supervisory level, for analyzing security and optimization techniques. The environment, based on Java language and Eclipse compiler, a Free Open Source Software - FOSS, has no restrictions to their utilization. The digital environment simulates an industrial plant, but utilizes a built-in system composed of a command unite, in this case an analogical PID, and an industrial inverter, produced by WEG. It was necessary to design a specific communication board, whose main component is a PIC 16F877A, to connect the PID controller and the industrial inverter to the computer environment. The system simulates a real control plant belonging to the Laboratory of Industrial Process Control of the Engineering College of UFJF. Incorporating the nonlinearities and complexities of the real plant, and running with the same time constants, the HIL developed, totally FOSS based, allows the training of operators, optimization and safety analysis of the industrial plant.

Conference Proceeding: Avaliação e projeto de um controlador self-tuning na estabilização de sistemas oscilatórios
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: This paper describes the development and a real application of a new digital self-tuning control scheme when applied to a damped pendulum system for trajectory tracking. The proposed control technique is derived from the optimization of a quadratic performance index which includes an additional weighted derivative term. The self-tuning control action is implemented with a recursive identification procedure with a covariance matrix reset scheme in order to find good process parameters. Experimental simulations show that the self-tuning controller provides a significant improvement in the system behavior, with setpoint tracking and increasing the damping of oscillations in the system over a range of operating conditions.

    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Adaptive controllers are investigated for control of a high-purity binary distillation column. A generalized predictive controller and an adaptive PID (proportional plus integral plus derivative) controller based on expert system concepts are used in a multiloop configuration to control column bottom and top compositions. The performance of these controllers is also compared with that of the conventional PID controller. The results obtained have shown that the adaptive PID controller based on expert system and pattern recognition ideas provides good results from the control, engineering, and cost-effectiveness points of view

  • Conference Proceeding: Comparison of self-tuning and predictive control algorithms applied to a nonlinear process
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: High-purity distillation columns present gain, time constants, and delays that vary nonlinearly, making the application of conventional controllers difficult. The behavior of linear and nonlinear self-tuning and predictive algorithms for single-input, single-output (SISO) cases applied to this class of processes is analyzed. Simulation results show that all the controllers can deal efficiently with this type of process with respect to load rejection and set-point tracking, with the predictive algorithm exhibiting the best performance
