    ABSTRACT: Several new first-row transition-metal complexes have been synthesised by combining the polynitrile dianion HCTMCP(2-) (hexacyanotrimethylenecyclopropandiide) with neutral, chelating co-ligands; 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline and 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole. The products cover a remarkable range of species including mononuclear complexes, dimers, charge-separated species and coordination polymers. Complexes containing 2,2'-bipyridine take the form [Mn(2,2'-bipy)(2)(HCTMCP)](2)·2MeOH (1) or [M(2,2'-bipy)(3)](HCTMCP) (2Fe and 2Co) which are dimeric and charge-separated products, respectively. The products obtained using 1,10-phenanthroline were the discrete complex [Co(HCTMCP)(1,10-phen)(2)(H(2)O)]·H(2)O·MeCN (3) and the 1D coordination polymer [Mn(HCTMCP)(1,10-phen)(H(2)O)(MeOH)] (4). Complexes using the 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole co-ligand (pypzH) form similar 1D complexes to 4, namely [Mn(pypzH)(HCTMCP)(MeOH)(H(2)O)] (5) and [M(pypzH)(HCTMCP)(MeOH)(2)] (6Co and 6Fe), albeit with different hydrogen-bonding motifs between the chains. The polymeric HCTMCP complexes show weak to zero antiferromagnetic coupling between metal centres and thus no long-range ordering.

    ABSTRACT: The first examples of polymeric complexes that contain the polynitrile dianion hexacyanotrimethylenecyclopropanediide (HCTMCP(2-)) were isolated and their magnetic properties have been explored. Complexes of the form (n-TBA)(2)[M(HCTMCP)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (1) (M = Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Cd(II)) possess (4,4) sheet structures with large cavities that contain the tetra-n-butylammonium (n-TBA) countercations. Synthesis using sodium as the countercation yields a family of products with the general form [M(S)(4)M(S)(2)(HCTMCP)(2)] (S = EtOH, M = Fe(II) (2); S = MeOH, M = Co(II) or Zn(II) (3)). These complexes adopt a variety of two-dimensional (2D) structures. The complex [Mn(3)(HCTMCP)(2)(H(2)O)(12)](HCTMCP)·6(H(2)O) (4) contains cationic (6,3) sheets with the counteranion and solvent molecules encapsulated within the hexagonal windows. Complexes 1-4 display weak antiferromagnetic coupling in all cases. The first example of a complex that contains the CN-coordinated monoanionic radical HCTMCP (•-), [Cu(HCTMCP)(MeCN)(2)] (5) is described. This one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer, containing tetrahedral Cu(I) centers, displays medium strength antiferromagnetic coupling that is mediated through π-interactions between the radical anions on adjacent chains.

    ABSTRACT: Three new groups of coordination polymers have been synthesised containing the anionic ligand nitrocyanamide, O2NNCN- (CAN). These new compounds have been structurally characterised and their magnetic properties have been investigated and show very weak antiferromagnetic coupling without any long-range order. Three complexes were obtained using pyrazine as a co-ligand, namely [Cu(CAN)(2)(pyz)](infinity) (1) and {[M(CAN)2(pyz)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O}(infinity) (M = Fe, 2Fe; M = Co, 2Co). Compound 1 forms a 2D (4,4) network containing both bridging pyrazine and CAN ligands with the latter adopting a N,O binding mode involving the terminal nitrogen atom. The Fe and Mn complexes 2 form 1D coordination polymers that are heavily hydrogen bonded to each other via coordinated and un-coordinated water molecules. Reaction of MCl2 with Ag(CAN) and 4,4'-bipyridine leads to the isomorphous complexes {[M(CAN)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)2]center dot(4,4'-bipy)}(infinity) (3) (M = Co, Fe, Mn) containing similar polymeric strands to those in the structure of 2. The interstitial bipyridine molecules in the structure of 3 give rise to two interpenetrating 3D hydrogen-bonded alpha-Po networks by interaction with the aqua ligands.

    ABSTRACT: The crystal structures of M(dca)2(Mepyz)2·H2O, M = Co (1), Ni (2), dca = dicyanamide, N(CN)2-, and Mepyz = methylpyrazine; [Mn(dca)2(Mepyz)2][Mn(dca)2(Mepyz)]2·2MeCN (3); and Mn2(dca)3(NO3)(Mepyz)2 (4) are reported. Compounds 1 and 2 are isomorphous and consist of two-dimensional (2D) (4,4) sheets, with bridging μ1,5-dca ligands and trans-disposed monodentate Mepyz ligands. Compounds 3 and 4 were obtained as an intimate mixture from the same reaction mixture. Compound 3 contains both one-dimensional (1D) chains, in which Mn atoms are bridged by double μ1,5-dca bridges and the Mepyz ligands are trans and monodentate, and 2D (4,4) sheets, in which similar 1D chains are connected by bridging Mepyz ligands. The structure of 4 contains two interpenetrating 4,6-connected three-dimensional networks, with bridging μ1,5-dca anions, bridging Mepyz ligands, and chelating NO3- anions. Only very weak coupling and no long-range magnetic ordering intrinsic to these materials were observed for 1 or 2, although traces of the ferromagnets α-Co(dca)2 and α-Ni(dca)2 were observable in very small applied fields, with ordering temperatures at 9 and 21 K, respectively.

    ABSTRACT: The structure of Mn(dca)2(H2O)2·2Me4pyz (dca = dicyanamide, N(CN)2-; Me4pyz = tetramethylpyrazine) contains one-dimensional polymeric chains of Mn(dca)2(H2O)2. The Me4pyz molecules hydrogen-bond to the water ligands, and form ···Me4pyz···H2O···Me4pyz···H2O··· chains which flank either side of the coordination polymer chains. Magnetic susceptibility studies show that very weak intra-chain antiferromagnetic-coupling occurs.

    ABSTRACT: The isomorphous structures of M(dca)2(H2O)·phz [M = Co, Ni; dca = dicyanamide, N(CN)2−; phz = phenazine] contain phz molecules intercalating between 2D M(dca)2(H2O) sheets containing bi- and tri-dentate dca ligands; the Ni complex displays long-range order (Tc = 5.7 K).
