ABSTRACT: Its [this study's] purpose is to compare and contrast, in an international context, the varieties of curricula, instructional practices, and student outcomes (both affective and cognitive) across the schools of twenty countries and educational systems. By portraying each system's school mathematics programs and attainments against a cross-cultural backdrop, each individual system is afforded the opportunity to understand better its own endeavors in mathematics education. Our concern is with what mathematics is intended to be taught, what mathematics is actually taught, how that mathematics is taught, and what mathematics is learned. The results of the adventure in data gathering and analysis is an international portrait of mathematics education—a portrait that we believe adds to our knowledge of the state of mathematics education around the world.
