  The study consist of two parts. The first refers to the history and the present of Medical Library in Paris - one of the richest European medical book libraries, containing among others collectionThe study consist of two parts. The first refers to the history and the present of Medical Library in Paris - one of the richest European medical book libraries, containing among others collection gathered by Medical Faculty and the Royal Medical Society since 1391. An abridged description of its edifice in the University of René Descartes, interior decorations of its main hall and opened quarters, as well as exhibits of the Museum of Medicine History is given. Author rises merits of professor Pierre Süe - surgeon and librarian - rendered by rescue of the library dismembered during the revolution of 1789. Here we shall find references of the most valuable incunabula and rare prints of the collection, distinctive for particular periods of progress in medicine and printing art. The second part of study contains information about unique collection of doctor theses presented in Medical Faculty since 1539 to 1778, and dissertations from Montpellier, Strasbourg and universities abroad - up to 1778. Particularly important seem to be titles of 32 theses prepared by the Polish authors awarding doctor degrees in Paris in the years 1890-1900 retrieved by the author, as completing in this field the Stanislas Konopka's Polish Medical Bibliography of XIX century (vol. IX, article: Doctor Theses - Paris).

  The Polish Expatriate Biography Institute was opened at the Polish Expatriate University in France, in 1995. Its merits include publishing a biographical quarterly Poles in the World, several biographical dictionaries covering Polish communities in various world countries, and starting an important initiative of publishing the Illustrated Biographical Dictionary of Poles in the World, whose first volume is expected to come out at the end of 2001. The Institute also organizes symposia on subjects related to the expatriate Polish biographic writings. Many biographies published so far are those of physicians, and pharmacists. Their list is attached at the end of the paper discussing in full detail the above-mentioned publications and symposia.

  Among Poles emigrating from Poland in XIX century (after November and January insurrection) there have been physicians and students of medicine - practising in insurgent troops - and young people,Among Poles emigrating from Poland in XIX century (after November and January insurrection) there have been physicians and students of medicine - practising in insurgent troops - and young people, who after arrival in France started medical studies at the medical faculties of Paris, Montpellier, and Strasburg. In Strasburg between 1833 and 1870 there have been promoted 1440 doctors of medicine, including 15 Polish emigrants (three have been granted diplomas before coming to France) and two sons of emigrants. Generally all of them were subsidized by the French government and released from additional payments. At the university they were treated favourably and they were even taking advantage of some conveniences. From the archival materials of the Faculty of Medicine and dossiers of students - refugees from the Department Archives of Bas-Rhin in Strasburg, there was possible to reconstruct the fragments of their biographies, even with such details as notes of exems or outward appearance. In biographical notes there have been presented 17 authors of the doctor's theses defended in Strasburg between 1833 and 1870 (12 were granted the diplomas between 1853 and 1847, five others - between 1867 and 1870).
