  • Conference Proceeding: Green Color Appreciation of Gemstones Based on CIE 1976 L*a*b*
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Based on CIE 1976 L*a*b* uniform color space, L*, a*, b* of jadeite-jade, emerald and turquoise were considered as independent variable, then color green of Jadeite-Jade could be distinguished from other two gemstones with discriminant analysis. Three gemstones discriminant functions were given by the fisher analysis. But in order to reduce false rate 22.9% from turquoise and 7.4% from emerald, green color of three gemstones were reclassified into 6 species by K-Means cluster analysis, and then 6 new discriminant functions were calculated to examine the validity of cluster analysis, finally the linear discriminant function model with high accuracy rate 98.8% were erected from fisher discriminant analysis.

  • Conference Proceeding: Preliminery Study on Small Alga Removal by Micro-pore Ceramic Filtration and UV Radiation
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: To solve oceanic environment problem caused by alien species invasion of ballast water, a novel approach of micro-pore ceramic filtration and UV radiation (MPCF&UV) was prompted. This work has studied on the MPCF&UV performance on small alga removal at the flow rate of 1~9m3/h. In the experiment, Chlorella Vulgaris, Nitzschia closterium, Platymonas subcordiformis were chosen as indicator organisms to mix with clean seawater as simulated ballast water. Microscope and SEM was used to analyze alga removal rates and to observe the changes in shape and structure of alga cells. The results show that higher removal percentages were obtained on all the three types of alga, and Platymonas subcordiformis was observed the highest removal rates of up to 100%. By SEM observation, it can be found that micro-pore ceramic filter (MPCF) can only ruin cell walls of the algae, and UV radiation can damage both cell walls and nucleus of the algae.

  • Conference Proceeding: Study on the accelerated software reliability demonstration testing for high reliability software based on strengthened operational profile
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: It usually takes a long time or huge amount of test cases to do software reliability demonstration testing (SRDT) on a very high reliability software by conventional methods, which leads to the fact that the conventional SRDT methods cannot be put into use for accurately predicting failure rate of a very high reliability software. By means of importance sampling, for high reliability software systems, an accelerated SRDT method is put forward based on the strengthened operational profile (OP) which is constructed on Musa's operational profile. For discrete-type and continuous-type software, this paper describes the methods doing SRDT and estimating software reliability separately. An experiment is done to demonstrate the method and the results show that similar demonstration conclusion and reliability evaluation value were obtained with less test cases, i.e. the method meets the requirement of accelerating SRDT, which is valuable in demonstrating a very high reliability software in limited resources.

  • Conference Proceeding: Hybrid quasi-3D DWT/DCT and SVD video watermarking
Ke Niu, Xiaoyuan Yang, Li Xiang
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A video watermarking robust algorithm based SVD is proposed. In order to analyze both the spatial and temporal characters of video sequence, each frame of the video is transformed to wavelet domain by 2-D DWT, and then 1-D DCT is used along the temporal axis. Watermarks were embedded into the singular values (SVs) of the coefficient frames and in the extraction procedure watermarks can be detected without the original video or any other information of the original singular values. Experiments show that the watermarked frames are indistinguishable from the original frames subjectively and the algorithm bears desirable robustness on filtering, additive noise, lossy compression, rotation and synchronization attacks etc.

  • Conference Proceeding: Towards Detecting the Interaction Vulnerabilities in Large Distributed System
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: In this paper, we proposed a novel approach, called LDS-IVD, to model the entity interaction vulnerabilities in Large Distributed System (LDS) which results from the absence of necessary security mechanisms. LDS-IVD constructs a general interaction security mechanism description language, named with IS-LAN. By analyzing the key resources in LDS with the finite state machine, IS-LAN provides the capability of discovering and validating the entity interaction vulnerabilities. In this way, IDS-IVD can find out the negative influence on the resource confidentiality, integrity and availability incurred by the deficiency of security mechanisms, and can detect the interaction vulnerabilities along with the attack patterns.

  • Article: [Effects of genistein and folic acid on neuronal membrane and mitochondrial membrane damaged by β-amyloid peptides 31-35].
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
    ABSTRACT: To observe the neuro-protective effects of genistein (Gen) and folic acid (FA) on neurons membrane and mitochondrial membrane damaged by β-amyloid peptides 31-35 (Aβ31-35). The primary cultured rat cerebral cortical neurons were randomly divided into DMEM (control), Aβ31-35 (25 µmol/L), Gen (Gen 27 µg/ml), FA (FA 40 µg/ml) and Gen + FA (Gen 27 µg/ml + FA 40 µg/ml). Gen and/or FA were added two hours before Aβ31-35 addition. After twenty four hours, MTT assay was performed to measure the viability of cultured neurons. Fluorescence polarization was performed to observe the neuron cell membrane fluidity. The mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was determined to investigate the alteration of mitochondrial structure and function of neurons by laser scanning confocal microscope and a flow cytometer was used to investigate the activation of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP). Each experiment was repeated three times. Compared with group Aβ31-35 (0.845 ± 0.050, F = 4.931, P < 0.05), the absorbance was significantly higher in group Gen (0.982 ± 0.110, t = 3.523, P < 0.01), FA (0.947 ± 0.061, t = 2.745, P < 0.01) and Gen + FA (0.996 ± 0.090, t = 3.966, P < 0.01). The viscosity of cell neuron membrane in group Gen (1.75 ± 0.28, t = 2.085, P < 0.05), FA (1.66 ± 0.37, t = 2.357, P < 0.05) and Gen + FA (1.50 ± 0.20, t = 3.784, P < 0.05) was significantly lower than that in group Aβ31-35 (2.11 ± 0.44, F = 5.529, P < 0.01), which indicated the cell membrane fluidity was significantly higher in group Gen and/or FA than that in group Aβ31-35. MMP was significantly decreased by Aβ31-35 (3.364 ± 1.140, t = 3.949, P < 0.01) when comparing to control group (6.383 ± 1.683), while it was significantly increased by Gen (5.286 ± 1.792, t = 2.406, P < 0.05), FA (5.884 ± 2.022, t = 2.887, P < 0.01) and Gen + FA (6.120 ± 2.124, t = 3.304, P < 0.01) when comparing to group Aβ31-35 (F = 7.585, P < 0.01). MPTP was activated by Aβ31-35 and Gen and/or FA could reverse this progress. Gen and/or FA could protect the neuronal and mitochondrial membrane from the impairment induced by Aβ31-35.

  • Conference Proceeding: A survey on artificial intelligence technologies in modeling of High Speed end-milling processes
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: High Speed Machining centers (HSM) are considered as complicated industrial instruments. Finishing is a critical process in production procedure which is carried on by these machines. Among many types of cutters, ball-nose cutters are the preferred cutters to do these kinds of operations since they have extensive operating cutting edges and appropriate geometry. The main aim of the researches on cutting process is to understand its nature better and to use this knowledge to improve the quality of the product. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to have a descriptive reference model on the process using experiments' data. Increasing demands for better surface-finishing and concurrently the development of the available measurement instruments and modeling techniques make the methods and approaches to be novel. Present paper is a survey on the lack of literature on the state-of-the-art modeling paradigms of milling processes, mainly on ball-nose cutters for surface finishing.

  • Conference Proceeding: Feature extraction of cone with precession based on micro-Doppler
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Precession is a key feature for distinguishing warhead from decoys in the missile midcourse, and a method of feature extraction of target with precession based on the micro-Doppler modulation is provided in this paper. The radar echo model of cone with precession is simulated by point scattering model, and the modulation of Doppler frequency caused by precession is developed. As the spread of echo spectrum corresponding to the modulation amplitude of micro-Doppler frequency, a method utilizing the spread of echo spectrum is provided to estimate the precession angle. Based on the characteristics of micro-Doppler, a 2D reconstruction of the target using inverse Radon transform and Time-Frequency distribution is proposed. The experiments demonstrate the validation of proposed method.

  • Article: Neuroprotective effects of genistein and folic acid on apoptosis of rat cultured cortical neurons induced by beta-amyloid 31-35.
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Genistein and folic acid have been reported respectively to protect against the development of cognitive dysfunction; however, the underlying mechanism(s) for this protection remain unknown. In this report, the mechanism(s) contributing to the neuroprotective effects of genistein and folic acid were explored using rat cortical neuron cultures. We found that genistein and folic acid, both separately and collaboratively, increased cell viability and mitochondrial membrane potential in beta-amyloid (Abeta) 31-35-treated neurons. Furthermore, reduced percentage of comet cells and shortened tail length were observed in the neurons treated with genistein or folic acid. A more significant reduction in tail length of the comet neurons was observed in the co-administered neurons. RT-PCR analysis of the cultured cortical neurons showed down-regulated expression of p53, bax and caspase-3, but up-regulated expression of bcl-2 in the three neuroprotective treatment groups compared with neurons from the Abeta31-35 solo-treated group. In a nuclear dyeing experiment using Hoechst 33342, we found that both genistein and folic acid prevent neuronal apoptosis. Collectively, these findings suggest that the mechanism underlying the neuroprotection of genistein and folic acid singly or in combination observed in cultured cortical neuron studies might be related to their anti-apoptotic properties.

  • Article: Neuroprotection of soyabean isoflavone co-administration with folic acid against beta-amyloid 1-40-induced neurotoxicity in rats.
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Soya isoflavones (SIF) and folic acid (FA) both confer the biological properties of antioxidation; however, the mechanism of their antioxidant effect on nervous system development is unclear. Our purpose is to investigate the neuroprotective effects of SIF, FA or co-administration of SIF with FA against beta-amyloid 1-40 (Abeta1-40)-induced learning and memory impairment in rats. In the present study, the learning and memory ability of rats and the amount of amyloid-positive neurons in the cerebral cortex and hippocampal CA1 area were measured. The levels of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione (GSH) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in serum and brain tissue were also measured. The results showed that intracerebroventricular administration of Abeta1-40 resulted in a dramatic prolongation of the escape latency; however, in the SIF, FA and SIF+FA treatment groups, the functional deficits of learning and memory were significantly improved. Moreover, after Abeta1-40 injection, the levels of T-AOC and GSH were profoundly decreased, suggesting a decline of antioxidant activity in the rats. However, intragastric pre-treatment with SIF, or FA, or SIF+FA resulted in a significant increase of antioxidative activity. SIF, or FA, or SIF+FA treatments also reversed the Abeta1-40-induced increase in the amount of amyloid-positive neurons. These results suggest that: (1) learning or memory impairment in experimental rats was caused by Abeta1-40, which is probably attributed to Abeta-induced oxidative damage and deposition of beta-amyloid peptides in the brain; (2) pre-administration of SIF and/or FA may prevent the pathological alterations caused by Abeta1-40 treatment and the neuroprotective effects of SIF and/or FA are indicated.

  • Article: Synthesis and characterization of copolythiophene
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Copolythiophenes (Co-PTs), poly(3-hexylthiophene-co-3-thiophene carboxylic acid) (P3HT-TCa), poly(3-hexyloxylthiophene-co-3-thiophene carboxylic acid) (P3HOT-TCa), and poly(3-phenylthiophene-co-3-thiophene carboxylic acid) (P3PhT-TCa), were synthesized by chemical oxidized polymerization to investigate the effect of copolymerization on the properties of polythiophenes (PTs). Gel permeation chromatography showed that the molecular weight (MW) of Co-PT was lower than that of homopolythiophene. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that the copolymerization was successful between the monomers. The λmax of Co-PTs gave a “blue shift” in ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectra. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed that the PL intensity of Co-PT became weaker than that of homopolythiophene and the disappearance of PL had been observed in P3HOT-TCa. The thermal stability of Co-PT was influenced by the carboxyl for its low decomposition temperature. Furthermore, the copolymerization between multi-wall carbon nanotube containing thiophene ring (MWNT-Th) and 3-hexyloxylthiphene could also take place successfully. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
