ABSTRACT: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a diagnostic tool whose inexpensiveness, simplicity and innocuousness have led it to be increasingly accepted in daily medical practice. This method, which is useful for the study of lesions that are accessible by radiological exploration or palpation, provides information about the cytological aspects of punctured lesions. Sometimes, such information can be extended to the histological area through study of cell blocks, true microbiopsies, which are of great diagnostic use. This was the technique used in the case described in the present report.

ABSTRACT: We report a case of enteritis cystica profunda observed in a patient who, owing to both his personal and familial history, had been diagnosed and suffering from Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. The patient was operated because of a clinical picture of intestinal invagination. Together with hamartomatous polyps, anatomopathological study of the segment of the small intestine removed revealed the presence of lesions typical of Enteritis cystica profunda consisting in the presence of benign encysted glands and pools of mucous in the deep layers of the intestinal wall. The main characteristics of this interesting and rare entity are briefly commented.

ABSTRACT: The present work reports on the findings obtained by fine-needle aspiration of two pilomatrixomas located on the upper limbs whose diagnosis was confirmed histologically. In both cases, the cytology disclosed a proliferation of small round basaloid cells that were dispersed and grouped in clusters together with squamous cells and abundant multinucleate giant cells. The differential diagnosis with other neoplasms is discussed.

ABSTRACT: In the hamster-BOP model, modifications occur in the endocrine portion of the pancreas during the induction of well-differentiated ductal carcinomas. In the present work, using immunohistochemical techniques it was possible to observe that the A cells in preserved islets and in the initial phase of the carcinogenic process were localized in the peripheral part of the islets. In animals with tumours, A cells were found to form part of the tumour glands and/or the tumoral stroma; this localization was seen to depend on the developmental phase of the tumour. A focal dispersion of A cells was observed in the animals with ductal carcinoma.

ABSTRACT: Biopsy specimens of gastric and duodenal mucosa from 326 patients were examined bacteriologically and histologically to determine the correlation between chronic gastritis and H. pylori colonization. H. pylori was identified in 111 (66.5%) patients with evidence of chronic gastritis and in 97 (82.2%) individuals who had gastritis associated with other pathology (gastric o duodenal ulcer, carcinoma o bulboduodenitis). The spiral bacteria was found more frequently in specimens with chronic superficial gastritis (88/107) and no significant difference was observed between the grade of activity of gastritis and H. pylori colonization. Giemsa stain was the most suitable method for detecting H. pylori in histological sections. By electron microscopy the microorganism was seen on the surface of the gastric mucosa, beneath the mucous layer, and more occasionally in intercellular junctions and the gastric pit.

ABSTRACT: A serial study was carried out on the lesions induced by N-nitroso-bis(2-oxopropyl)amine (BOP) in the Syrian golden hamster until the appearance of pancreatic ductal carcinomas. During the initial phase, first findings were cytolysis of acinar cells close to blood vessels and other cells, together with a loss of zymogen granules from the cytoplasm, and an increase in the diameters of the acinar lumens. After week 11 a proliferation of ductule-like cells was observed. We consider that a minimum proliferation of cells at the acinus-ductule junction would give rise to pseudoductules composed of remains of acinar cells together with ductule-like cells.

ABSTRACT: Experimental pancreatic carcinoma induced in Golden Syrian Hamsters by subcutaneous injections of N-nitrosobis-(2-oxopropyl) amine (BOP) was studied during the different phases of its development by determination of serum CA 19-9 levels and tissue labeling with CA 19-9 TM. Significant differences were observed in the CA 19-9 values between the controls and animals with carcinoma (p less than 0.01) and between the latter and animals with cystic or cystic papillary lesions (p less than 0.01). Distribution of the deposits of CA 19-9 TM was different in the initial tumoral lesions and in the longer-developed tumors. An important correlation was observed between tissue deposits and serum levels of this tumor marker.

ABSTRACT: Masson's vegetant hemangioendothelioma is a benign intravascular tumor, sometimes confused with such malignant vascular tumors as angiosarcoma, whose clinical appearance is nonspecific and whose diagnosis can only be established through microscopic examination. The fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic findings together with the histologic and immunohistochemical findings of such a tumor in a 22-year-old man are presented. Cytologically, the material obtained by FNA consisted of two distinct populations of cells. One type of cell had large nuclei (sometimes displaced towards the periphery), finely granular chromatin, prominent nucleoli and abundant globular cytoplasm. The second type of cell had spindle-shaped or oval nuclei, granular chromatin and scanty eosinophilic cytoplasm. Although these findings may permit the cytologic recognition of this entity, the aspirate in this case was interpreted as showing a vascular mesenchymal tumor of probable malignancy. Histologic examination of the excised tumor, aided by immunoperoxidase studies for factor VIII antigen that revealed the endothelial nature of the proliferating cells, established the correct diagnosis.

ABSTRACT: In pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma induced in the Syrian hamster by N-nitrosobis (2-oxopropyl) amine (Bop) B cells persisted with focal dispersion in the tumor zone. The localization of these varied depending on whether the animals had initial or long standing tumors. In the animals with initial tumors, immunohistochemical techniques indicated the B cells formed part of the tumoral glands and/or were intimately related to the cells of the walls of the tumor glands or present in the stroma. Insulin values were high in these animals. In the longer-developed tumors, insulin levels tended to be lower and although B cells were seen forming part of the tumor glands, those in the tumoral stroma were predominant.

ABSTRACT: We studied the usefulness of antral cytologic specimens obtained by brushing and stained with Diff-Quik in the diagnosis of gastric colonization by Helicobacter pylori in 102 patients, comparing this method with other commonly employed techniques. We report on the sensitivity, specificity, predictive value for positive and negative cases of each of the techniques used, and diagnostic problems posed by each. In general, the Diff-Quik-stained samples proved to be the most useful. This technique is a simple, economical and practical method for the diagnosis of gastric colonization by H pylori.
