ABSTRACT: The transformations that have revolutionized the labor market in contemporary society make it necessary to think of new alternatives for training health care professionals, thereby establishing a new approach to the health problems of individuals and collectives. Based on these considerations, this paper sets out to discuss training in health - based on the concept of competence - with a focus on education for the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), using attempts to analyze and propose an alternative to the system entrenched in the logic of late capitalism as a theoretical benchmark. It is thus a reflection on the subject, correlating theory and praxis, in constant and relentless movement of construction, deconstruction and (re)construction of propositions.

ABSTRACT: Bearing in mind that the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) is a social process in construction, and as health professionals are important individuals in this process, the role of permanent education as an important instrument to ensure humanized care is highlighted. The scope of this paper is to discuss the experience of the training course for health professionals of a public health outpatient unit, based on the prospect of humanized treatment, seeking the implementation of a sanitary model committed to the formal values contained in the SUS ideals. The teaching-learning methodology used is based on problem-solving, derived from the processing of a problem situation taken from the experience of teachers. The professionals identified that the standard established in the way of thinking and acting in health is unsatisfactory to meet the challenges faced in the sector. The strategies used contributed to systematize the content through reflection on the theoretical benchmarks submitted, by eliciting reflective and critical thought, which are fundamental aspects for broadening and increasing the process of empowerment of professionals. The course stimulated group action, placing the discussion on the humanization of health actions on the agenda.

ABSTRACT: To search the literature for evidence of the contribution of elderly health programs to the process of healthy aging in Brazil.
The databases Science Direct, SciELO, LILACS, IBECS, the Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE were searched to find articles focusing on initiatives developed for the elderly population and to promote healthy aging, providing a multidimensional evaluation of the quality of life of the elderly, and covering aspects relating to specific health promotion practices. The initiatives were considered effective if the following criteria were met: having goals that included the improvement of health and well-being, having a focus on holistic health, using empowerment as a central mechanism to improve health, and meeting the prerequisites for health and developing actions in the priority areas described in the Ottawa Charter.
Ten articles referring to five elderly health promotion programs in Brazil were identified. All the programs met the efficacy criteria, and included elements that promoted healthy aging through characteristics that fostered the insertion of the elderly in society through the creation of a support environment for the prevention of injury, increase in functional capacity, and improvement of quality of life.
Studies are required to produce scientific evidence on the efficacy, efficiency, and effectiveness of elderly health programs to determine the value of these actions to promote healthy aging.

ABSTRACT: The present study analyzes the representation of the users of SUS and PSF, presenting data obtained by semi-structured interviews, using the theoretical referential of the qualitative research. The results show a social representation marked by a focused vision and assistance, pointing to the concentration of public resources in poor segments of the society and centered in the biomedical model of attention. It stands out that PSF did not reach their objectives to provide changes in the praxis in health. In relation to the social control, it is observed that only 5.9% of the interviewees know the CMS. The presented data show a great ignorance by the studied population on the sanitary system and conquered social laws, and many people still see SUS as a "health plan for the poor". Due to the lived reality, the need of the implementation of strategies is emphasized for the reach of larger powerment/liberation of the population, seeking to build effective possibilities so that their actors will be active participant of the process of construction of a common project, actually based on the democratic ideals of SUS, being PSF strategically important in the accomplishment of these actions.

ABSTRACT: The inter-relations between man and the environment are among the main themes currently debated by the Brazilian public health. On such horizon, the questions concerning Chagas's disease are found to remain specially in the scope of the directed actions of control to the triatomine, the anti-vectorial fight , though already a century since its first description by Carlos Chagas, a major epidemiological problem in Latin America. Based on these considerations the present article will seek to discuss the main ecological aspects related to the American trypanosomiasis, emphasizing the control of the vectorial transmission in the context of the deep ecology.

ABSTRACT: The objective was to raise and classify scientific works on the influence of the social net of lactating mothers in the context of the breastfeeding. A bibliographical review was done in the main databases (MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO), using as keywords: breastfeeding, weaning and family (and their versions in English and Spanish). Books, thesis, dissertations, and publications in international and national institutions were consulted (WHO, UNICEF, Ministry of Health). It could be observed that the actors that compose the social net of the lactating mothers can interfere in the decision of breastfeeding, through different extents, such as the encouragement/support to the initiative; reviewing the knowledge and cultural values; family tradition; and the cultivation of the indifference/discourage and the pressure exercised on the lactating mothers in relation to the form of feeding the child. In this way, it can infer on the need of the implementation of new health practices regarding to the care of this group. It is worth to highlight, the importance of the professionals to be qualified for the sensitive listening on the meaning of the nursing under the glance of the lactating mothers . Finally, it stands out the importance role of the social net of the lactating mothers, especially the family, for a successful breastfeeding.

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the logic behind human resources management in primary health care from the perspective of municipal health systems administrators in Brazil, rethinking the decentralization process based on mediation between Federal government guidelines and the health services' daily practice. This was a cross-sectional study using a semi-structured questionnaire applied to municipal health secretaries in the Southeastern Health Macro-Region (Minas Gerais State). The municipal health secretaries had a mean age of 39.4 years and low schooling, and a large proportion did not belong to the health field. As for the workforce in the Family Health Program, the municipal governments hired 93.3% of the health professionals, mostly on temporary contracts. The findings confirm gaps in the workers' political and social rights. Paradoxically, the government itself, through the municipal administration, is responsible for failing to comply with the prevailing labor legislation.

ABSTRACT: The importance of health systems and services evaluation has been evidenced in several discussions on policies for health and practices in services. Thus, this study was carried out to analyze the primary care to the pregnant women by the Family Health Program (PSF) in the municipality of Teixeiras, Minas Gerais State. According to the propositions by Donabedian (1990) who relates the dimensions of structure, process and result, a specific score system was used to analyze these dimensions and their respective attributes, classifying the program into the incipient, intermediate and advanced sceneries, if the following were obtained: from 0.0 to 33.3%, 33.4% to 66.6, 66.7, and 100.00%, respectively. In summary, such dimensions resulted into a intermediate scenery (52.2%) for PSF characterized by an attention to the fragmented pregnant woman's health, although presenting some progresses concerning the organization of attention toward this group. Although progresses in implantation of PSF, the scenario reveals the program still presents strong characteristic marks of the hegemonic model centered on procedures and biomedical attention.

ABSTRACT: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) or von Recklinghausen disease is a genetic disorder affecting the growth of cells in nervous system. One of the most remarkable characteristics of this disease is the development of benign tumors of the nervous system (neurofibromas). The purpose of this study was to test tissue samples taken from neurofibromas and plexiform neurofibromas of NF1 patients for the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors. We used previously collected samples from patients registered in the database of the Centro Nacional de Neurofibromatose (CNNF-Brazil). Samples from twenty-five patients in the database presenting plexiform neurofibromas (N1 group) and 25 samples from the same database from patients presenting neurofibromas (N2 group) were tested. We observed positive staining for progesterone receptors in 13 of the neurofibroma samples and 19 of the plexiform neurofibroma samples. Among the neurofibroma samples, we observed one sample with positive estrogen receptor staining, but none of the plexiform neurofibroma samples showed positive staining. We suggest further studies to investigate in greater depth possible hormonal influences on the development and growth of neurofibromas and plexiform neurofibromas in NF1.

ABSTRACT: The imperative need for modifying the Brazilian medical education--aiming at the formation of a professional more capable to answer the populations main health problems--has opened the possibility for the use of new teaching methodologies. In this scenario, the Problem Based Learning (PBL) outstands as the curriculum structuring tool adopted in several institutions, showing as main characteristics the capability of fostering (1) significant learning, (2) the undissociated link between theory and practice, (3) the respect for the students autonomy, (4) the work in small groups, (5) the permanent education and (6) the formative evaluation. Despite its indisputable leading position, PBL can be understood as a way to exercise power in the context of an emerging modus of social organization: the societies of control.

ABSTRACT: The bioethical debate on euthanasia (good death) has been classically polarized between the principles of sacredness of life--the argumentation against--and the quality of life, represented by the vicarious principle of respect for autonomy--the argumentation in favor. In both cases the question is built around the pertinence and moral legitimacy--or not--of the individual possibility to decide about the termination of ones own existence, demanding for oneself a good death. Undoubtedly, euthanasia always implies besides the self, the other, who will either carry out the action--or hold to non-action--culminating in the abbreviation of life. To propose a discussion about this last referred issue, based on the bioethics of protection theoretical references and the concept of laic compassion is the scope of the present essay.

ABSTRACT: Revising earlier conceptual misconstructions and delving deeper into the historical debate on the origins of homeopathy, this text returns to discussions initiated in the article "Simila Similibus Curentur: historical notes on homeopathic medicine" (1997). Research has been based on two main sources: ancient texts--Corpus Hippocraticum and works by Galen, Paracelsus, and Hahnemann--and the studies of commentators. In the nine years since original publication, previously explored content has undergone gradual revision, some points have been corrected, and discussions have developed further, lending substantially greater maturity to earlier positions. 'Born' in the eighteenth century yet rooted in the very origins of Western medicine, homeopathy is endeavoring to blossom in the twenty-first century as a specialty that wants to be autonomous but that needs the legitimacy of 'traditional' medical science.
