Article: Sensorineural hearing loss of noise in members of aviation club of Larissa (Greece).
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: To evaluate the clinical and audiometric characteristics of noise by an one-engine Cessna (1300-1750 RPM), by ultra light aircrafts and different types of air modeling products which induce hearing loss in air modeling members of Aviation club of Larissa in Greece. During the past 2 years members in the aviation club were referred for clinical and audiological examination in the ENT Department of hearing and speech and underwent a personal interview with a specific questionnaire. No one of the examined members was using individual protection systems during aviation activities. From all members examined, a 30% had an audiogram with a slope in high frequencies, not attributed to presbyacousis and had experienced at least one symptom associated with hearing disturbance. Air modeling members in aviation club that are exposed to noise during aviation activities without protection are at high risk of noise induced hearing loss.Hippokratia 09/2008; 12 Suppl 1:59-63. · 0.52 Impact Factor -
Article: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the anterior semicircular canal: atypical clinical findings and possible underlying mechanisms.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Anterior semicircular canal (ASC) lithiasis is uncommon and usually self-treated. In the rare cases when such patients seek medical advice, diagnosis requires careful consideration of the patient's symptoms and the clinical characteristics of the nystagmus triggered by the Dix-Hallpike (D-H) examination. In this study, two atypical cases of ASC benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are presented and the relevant literature is reviewed. Regardless of their unique symptoms, both participants in this study were diagnosed with lithiasis of the left ASC. The clinical manifestations of ASC BPPV may differ significantly from typical symptoms seen in the more common posterior semicircular canal BPPV. The possible mechanisms responsible for this intriguing variance, as well as guidelines for diagnosing the affected side, are discussed.International journal of audiology 06/2008; 47(5):276-82. · 1.34 Impact Factor -

Article: CT and MRI in malignant external otitis: a report of four cases.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Malignant external otitis (MEO) is a severe infection of the external auditory canal and skull base which most often affects elderly patients with diabetes mellitus. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are important in terms of reducing risks of dissemination. We report four cases of MEO in patients with diabetes mellitus who were observed with computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI was superior to CT in patients with MEO in terms of estimating the anatomic extent of the disease, but it cannot be used for monitoring therapy.Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics 02/2003; 27(1):27-34. · 1.47 Impact Factor -
Article: Maxillary sinus inflammatory disease: ultrasound compared to computed tomography.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Fifty-six patients (age range, 15-79 yr, average, 37.0+/-18.5 yr), with a clinical and/or radiological diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis, were prospectively studied with ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT). The imaging finding which supported the diagnosis of acute sinusitis with US was the identification of the hyperechoic posterior antral wall through the hypoechoic inflammation. The findings were compared to CT (3 mm axial sections). The sensitivity of US for maxillary sinus disease was found to be 66.7% and the specificity was 94.9%, which were similar to the plain film ones (65.2 and 96.8%, respectively). The results of the present study suggest US as the method of first choice for acute sinusitis of the maxillary antra, particularly for children and pregnant women.Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics 21(4):233-41. · 1.47 Impact Factor -
