ABSTRACT: Congestion control for streaming real-time applications, which need smoothness of the transmission rate, should be transmission control protocol (TCP)-friendly. Moreover, in wireless networks, TCP-friendly congestion control should be based on differentiation of packet losses due to congestion and wireless link error to improve network utilisation. The authors propose a TCP-friendly congestion control algorithm based on explicit congestion notification over the wireless networks. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm utilises the link bandwidth efficiently, providing smoothness of the transmission rate.

Article: Explicit window adaptation algorithm over TCP wireless networks

ABSTRACT: A feedback-based congestion control algorithm is described which improves TCP performance over wireless networks. An explicit feedback scheme is proposed for the fair sharing of the bandwidth by modifying the receiver's advertised window in TCP acknowledgments returning to the source. Using the feedback information, the proposed algorithm adapts the window size to avoid the congestion and sees the packet loss only due to the wireless link error. Based on the asymptotic analysis, it is shown that the proposed algorithm guarantees the fair sharing and improves wireless TCP performance. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by simulations.

Article: Fair TCP congestion control in heterogeneous networks with explicit congestion notification

    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The authors propose a window-based congestion control algorithm to achieve max-min fair sharing of the available bandwidth in ECN capable heterogeneous TCP networks. The proposed algorithm extracts the network status from successive binary congestion information provided by ECN. From the extracted network information, the authors estimate a fair window size proportional to the propagation delay. Through simulations, the effect on TCP fairness of the proposed algorithm is shown for the heterogeneous network.
