ABSTRACT: This authors of this column explore the use of nursing theory in Poland. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study was conducted to explore what, if any nursing theories were used by nurses in Poland, and if an education program on nursing theory increased the use of nursing theory. The study found that while there were discrepancies between the nurses' theoretical knowledge base and their use of these theories in practice, there is evidence of the use of the ideas and theory of Nightingale, Orem, and Henderson in nursing practice in Poland.

ABSTRACT: This paper is a report of an evaluation of paediatric nurses' assessment and diagnostic skills and interventions used for child maltreatment.
The use of violence against children occurs in all environments worldwide. Therefore, broader theoretical and practical knowledge related to this issue is needed in health care to facilitate more accurate identification of child maltreatment in order to instigate implementation of appropriate care for these children.
The study was based on cross-sectional data obtained with a convenience sample of 160 Registered Nurses employed at paediatric wards at two large cities in Poland (response rate 80%). Data collection took place between December 2005 and March 2006. The research tool was a questionnaire form designed on the basis of international literature concerning battered child syndrome.
Battered child syndrome seems to be a relatively common phenomenon, as a great majority of participants (86·25%) had encountered it in their practice. The form of child maltreatment which was most often mentioned (by 30·00% of participants) was neglect. Almost three-quarters of the nurses (61·25%; n = 98) said that they had been involved in providing care for a maltreated child.
Nurses should work with maltreated children on an individualized basis, combined with interdisciplinary cooperation with specialists from related disciplines concerned with the issue. There appears to be a need for specialized training for nurses to increase their competence in working with maltreated children and their families.

ABSTRACT: The social and political transition taking place in Poland during the last decade has resulted in changes in the system of education. The results of empirical studies indicate that both the system of education and the period of its transition exerted an influence on the qualifications of nurses.
The focus of the study was the relationship between the selected education factors and the occupational experience of nurses.
The study was conducted by the method of a diagnostic survey with the use of the authors' version of a questionnaire form. The variables were tested by means of chi-square test and Spearman's correlation test. The investigations covered a group of 324 occupationally active nurses in area of the city of Lublin.
The analysis indicates that among many variables concerning education and occupational improvement, only the type of education (1st and 2nd level of occupational differentiation) has a statistically significant effect on auto-defining of nursing in the the nature of occupational activities performed.

ABSTRACT: The scope of the term "care" and of related "caring" and "nursing care" is implicated in the range of relevant research. By measuring variables assigned to structural elements of care it is possible to undertake empirical verifications.
This work was undertaken to present and analyze the existing research tools used for measuring care/caring in nursing.
Our analysis of the existing research tools for measuring care/caring was done according to the criterion of specificity and distinctiveness.
Research tools used for measuring care/caring in nursing comprise items belonging to two basic--technical and emotional--dimensions. Data are collected from the patient, the nurse, or the observer.
The comparability of measurements of care variables is achievable only if reliable tools are used in nursing research.

ABSTRACT: This paper is a report of a study to identify Polish nurses' definition of the concept of nursing care.
Polish nursing currently is in a period of scientific research focusing on development of precise definitions of concepts. Definitions of nursing are influenced by culture, social expectations and healthcare systems. Accepted scientific definitions of concepts should be based on empirical verification that takes theoretical and practical perspectives into account.
A survey questionnaire was constructed from analysis of a random sample of 27 essays about nursing care that had been completed by 300 Polish nurses. The survey questionnaire, which was designed to measure the essence of nursing care, was completed by 324 Polish nurses during 2004 and 2005.
Analysis of survey questionnaire responses revealed that the essence of nursing care encompasses providing care, communicating, supporting, helping, assisting, accompanying and managing. Participants indicated that nursing care recipients include healthy persons, ill persons and persons at risk for disease.
The concept of nursing care encompasses several traits or characteristics that can be applied to both well and ill people.

ABSTRACT: The drawing, as a kind of artistic language, used by the child-artist to express his or her thoughts and opinions concerning their environment is an immensely interesting form of cognition for the viewers of such artistic creations. The aim of the study was the analysis of the presentation of the image of the nursing profession created by children and the application of these experiences in vocational education of nurses. The objects of the analysis, were 182 artistic creations of children living in eastern Poland. The detailed analysis of the works was carried out by three independent competent judges who grouped the works according to the accepted indicators of evaluation. The young artists created the image of the nurse that presents a detailed range of professional duties, the quality of the child-nurse relationship and the prognostic vision of the new activities that will be put into practice in the future. The rich content of the drawings was complemented by the high artistic value of the composition. The study material collected should be used not only by nurses participating in care of children, but also in vocational education of nurses for more complete preparation of candidates to perform their future profession.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the review is to present the results of an analysis and evaluation of the state of research on patient education based on the Polish nursing literature. A review and analysis of 139 research works was carried out, which during the years of 1990-2001 appeared in Polish nursing journals as well as in post-conference and convention proceedings and reports. The collected material was evaluated according to the following criteria: defining the research problem, defining and operationalising the variables studied, the research tool applied, the research method used, the size and selection of the research sample, the results achieved. The analysis of research works carried out in the area of patient education became the basis of the objective knowledge of the current state of research and its relation to the nursing practice in this area.

ABSTRACT: Caring manifested by the concern of a nurse, attention and carefulness of activities with respect to a human being in need is the essence of nursing care, while caring actions constitute the most independent scope of nurses' activities. The aim of the study was to determine whether the nurses in their everyday occupational practice understand the core of caring actions and perceive the conditioning of their realisation. The study covered 130 nurses employed in inpatient health facilities. The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire form containing variously constructed questions. The results of the study showed that nurses undertook caring actions 'willingly' more often than 'very willingly', the percentage of respondents undertaking caring actions in category 'very willingly' increasing with the duration of employment. Over 86% of nurses in the study independently undertook caring actions, as soon as they recognized patients' demand; however, only 7% of respondents admitted that caring actions determine the distinct character of the nursing profession. According to the greatest number of respondents the following factors determined the quality of caring services: organization of work in the ward, provision of material and means for nursing, personality-related factors, incentives for work, and supervisor's requirements. Nurses applying the method of individual work with a patient undertook caring actions more often than those working by the method of traditional nursing.
