• [Comparison of the influence of mineral trioxide aggregate and calcium hydroxide on dental pulp of permanent teeth in biological treatment and cell cultures].

  The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a new product called Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) used in direct and indirect pulp capping. The results of pulp treatment using therapeuticThe aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a new product called Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) used in direct and indirect pulp capping. The results of pulp treatment using therapeutic MTA with the results after application of calcium hydroxide were compared. Moreover, the aim of the study was to determine the toxicity of the investigated materials in relation to human fibroblast cultures derived from dental pulp. The study included 97 patients, male and female in the age 8-56 years. A total of 135 vital pulp therapy treatments were performed. Depending on the material and methods, the patients were assigned to four groups. In the carried out study 88.2% of the results were positive after a direct coverage of the pulp using MTA and 86.7% of positive results were after the application of calcium hydroxide. In the case of indirect use of both the MTA and Ca(OH)2 100% positive results were obtained. Biocompatibility test preparations showed significantly lower toxicity of MTA compared with Ca(OH)2. On the basis of clinical examination Mineral trioxide Aggregate proved to be as effective as calcium hydroxide in the direct and indirect pulp capping. It has been shown that the deeper damage to the pulp, of the kind during its injury, worse the prognosis compared to an exposure in the pulp. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate proved to be highly statistically significantly less toxic compared to Ca(OH)2.

• Endodontic and prosthetic treatment of teeth with C-shaped root canals.

  The aim of this study was to describe and discuss the unusual anatomy that can be detected during routine endodontic and prosthetic treatment of mandibular second molars. We studied 2 mandibularThe aim of this study was to describe and discuss the unusual anatomy that can be detected during routine endodontic and prosthetic treatment of mandibular second molars. We studied 2 mandibular second molars with C-shaped canals in two patients who underwent endodontic and prosthetic treatment. In one patient, the preoperative radiograph of mandibular right second molar indicated radicular fusion with single apex and two canals. However, four separate canals were disclosed during endodontic treatment. There were no complications during cleaning, shaping, and obturation of the canals. In the second patient, prosthetic restoration of the mandibular left second molar after root canal treatment was necessary. The radiograph showed radicular fusion with one wide central canal correctly obturated. The tooth was prepared without difficulty or complications for the cast post and crown. Endodontic treatment in the first patient was successful as confirmed with the postoperative radiograph showing precisely obturated canals. The cast post performed in the second patient enabled effective tooth reconstruction with a prosthetic crown. C-shaped canals may be precisely debrided and obturated on condition that they have been disclosed on preoperative radiographs. Prosthetic reconstruction of these teeth with a post-crown is possible but only with the use of the distal canal.

• [Mineral content of enamel, depth of biopsy, and dentition status in postmenopausal women]

  PURPOSE: The study was designed to evaluate the relationship between the content of fluoride, magnesium and phosphorus in enamel, depth of biopsy, and dentition status in postmenopausal women.PURPOSE: The study was designed to evaluate the relationship between the content of fluoride, magnesium and phosphorus in enamel, depth of biopsy, and dentition status in postmenopausal women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dentition status in 81 postmenopausal women aged 48-70 years (mean 54.98 years) was determined using the Decayed, Missing and Filled Surfaces (DMFS) index. Double-layer superimposed acid biopsies were used for sampling labial enamel of upper permanent central incisor. Biochemical analysis was performed to determine the content of fluoride, magnesium, and phosphorus. Assuming that enamel contains 37% calcium, enamel mass, layer thickness, biopsy depth and concentrations of ions in the surface and subsurface layer were calculated. Correlation analysis was done to disclose relationships between the parameters studied. CONCLUSIONS: It was observed that the concentration of ions decreased with growing depth of biopsy. Decreasing depth of biopsy correlated with increasing concentration of fluorides and magnesium in surface and subsurface layer of enamel. The total depth of biopsy correlated more exactly with the concentration of fluorides and magnesium in subsurface layer than in surface layer. Increasing concentration of fluoride was associated with increasing concentration of magnesium. No correlation was observed between DMFS and the depth of enamel biopsy.
