  • Article: [Breast self-examination by nursing professionals].
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Most breast tumors are detected by women, not health professionals, therefore breast self-examination (BSE) continues to be an efficacious strategy. The study objective was to analyze BSE performed by nursing professionals and factors that hinder their perseverance in this practice. This descriptive study was performed with 159 professionals: 40 nurses, 48 nurses aides, and 71 health agents from 19 Basic Health Units located in Fortaleza (Ceará, Brazil). Data collection was performed using a self-administered questionnaire, and the analysis was based on the Self Care Theory. Of the 159 professionals, 86 (54%) performed BSE on a monthly basis. Of the 73 professionals who did not perform BSE, 60 (82%) reported the reason for that was forgetting, 38 (52%) for not trusting the technique/did not know the correct technique, and 35 (48%) due to lack of health care. It was found that although most women reported performing BSE, the professionals felt insecure and would like to learn better about this technique.

  • Article: [Applying the model of evaluation of Meleis to Travelbee's theory].

    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Aiming to carry out a critical and interpretative reflection about Joyce Travelbee's theory of Interpersonal Relation, we used a discursive segment of the model of theory analysis proposed by Meleis. The analysis specifically used the description of the model at the functional components: focus, client, nursing, health, nurse-client interaction, environment, nursing problems and nursing therapeutics. We identified the focus as the interpersonal nature of the relations, with the objective to help the client or the family. The other component had been identified within the theory, except for the term environment. The model of analysis is presented, therefore, as efficient while aiming the evaluation and adequacy of the theory to the scientific work.

  • Article: [The performance of mastectomized women in group activities].
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: We aim to describe the reactions of women confronting mastectomy, and the feelings that emerged from group interaction. 10 women from the GEPAM group (Teaching, Research, Self-help and Assistance to Mastectomized Women Group) were interviewed in November and December 2001 and January 2002. Reactions in the face of mastectomy can be singled out as: depression, discrimination, adoption of new behavior and the need for social interaction. Group interaction revealed feelings of friendship and curiosity. These aspects lead us to understand that group activities are important in minimizing the conflicts associated with mastectomy and also in valuing of the feelings of these women, to provide more effective rehabilitation and better quality of life.

    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: This article presents an analysis of prenatal care provided in a micro-regional health system in the State of Ceará, Brazil. The objectives were to analyze the population covered by the Family Health Program (FHP) teams; to evaluate data from the Basic Health Care Information System and the Live Birth Information System; and to establish a profile of medical and nursing services provided during prenatal care. Data were collected from the fourth health micro-region in the town of Baturité and the Ceará State Health Department in May-June 2001, through review of patient records, free observations, and searches in the information systems. Despite the excellent population coverage by FHP teams, resulting in improved access, increased numbers of prenatal visits, improved vaccine coverage, and early diagnosis of complications of pregnancies, the impact of these measures need to be assessed in terms of the real improvement in the women s quality of life. A protocol also needs to be followed by doctors and nurses throughout the course of prenatal care, besides guaranteeing medical consultations as an integral part of the program.

  • Article: [The perception of domestic violence of pregnant and not pregnant women in the city of Campinas, São Paulo].
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: This study sought to compare the perception of domestic violence of women, victims of this kind of violence, with the perception of pregnant women, victims or not of domestic violence, as well as to search for elements allowing for the planning and execution of a cohort study on domestic violence among pregnant women. A qualitative exploratory research was conducted using the technique of convenience sampling for selecting a focal group. The subjects were twenty four women divided into two groups: (1) thirteen women from a follow-up group from a Referral Center for victims of domestic violence, and (2) eleven pregnant women that were participating in the pre-natal care program in a primary care unit, selected independently of suffering domestic violence or not. The data collected were transcribed, conceptually decoded and qualified for qualitative analysis. The contents of the women's discourse were analyzed on the basis of thematic categories. It was observed that domestic violence was perceived in a similar way by both studied groups, independently from the fact of having or not experienced a situation of this kind. The understanding and discussion of the topics proposed for the groups allowed developing a more appropriate approach to the studied women. The way the questions were formulated in the questionnaire was considered of easy understanding by both groups of women.
